I once threw a jack o lantern out of my 1987 Honda Accord into a cemetery on a full moon night. This song was blasting. The entire album is amazing
Haha, love that image!
Full version is one of my favourites
This song got me in to Genesis, the 12" is excellent, still is.
Great atmosphere. This is a top 5 Genesis song for me.
I always thought Mama was a strange opener in 86 because it’s a hard song to sing if your voice wasn’t warmed up. Phil did it great live but I was always shocked he did it cold on his voice. I liked the long intro in the 86 tour. Sets the mood.
Tonight is one of my favorite songs ever and I could listen to it on a loop. I loved how they did the long version live in 86 because of the pads Phil plays in the middle. It’s my favorite part of the song actually. I prefer a definite ending to it how Phil did it live. His vocals are so powerful on this one. I remember when this song came out and it was never scary. I was 30 at the time. The US had this song in a Michelob beer commercial that was very effective and I remember it perfectly to this day. My favorite version of this song is The Archives version which I think is the 12 inch single. This song definitely sets the mood and could make a good opener. I HATED the truncated version in the WCD tour going into Invisible Touch. It seemed like they had to give the fans a bone and throw it in there but they didn’t do it justice. I personally think this song is a masterpiece.
Agreed! I always preferred when they did this song live in it's own right and Phil would say "And now tonight,...Tonight...Tonight" and into the song.
I would never consider the songs of Genesis as spooky, rather very atmospheric. And like you said their songs are like movies. Because they also immerse you into their 'narrative'. I think 'No Son of Mine' is a great example (especially the ticking clock at the beginning instilling tension in the listener 😨). And Phil is the master of setting up the mood.
Really enjoy listening. Your insight and knowledge about the music of Phil and Genesis is very interesting. Thanks.
Fr, literally!!! One of the main reasons why my love & respect for Genesis and Phil Collins keeps on rising especially when it comes to breaking down albums or songs from their music catalogue.🙏💪👍
I remember the Michelob beer commercials that used this song. Strange that they were advertising beer with a song about other substances.
Thanks! Interesting reflections!
This song reminds me of Apocalypse in 9/8, particularly the vocals. I just watched some interviews and that clearly wasn’t intentional. Definitely two of my favorites. Love your insight into this one
Tony said, the instrumental was dropped because they had stronger instrumentals in subsequent tours.
They cut the song short because Phil can't sustain his voice through to the part, "You keep telling me I've got everything..." through to the end.
They could have done an abbreviated instrumental or even suck to the radio version, so I wonder if Tony was not telling the whole truth.
IMHO they should have retired the song entirely instead of playing just a couple of building verses and chorus... building to ... Invisible Touch? Kind of irked me.
Just listened to the song. It was played on the radio. I noticed Phil’s voice is processed. It reminds me of John Par - St. Elmo’s Fire. The tempo try mixing it with Stan - My Delight, Only because I was listening to that dance tune form the very early 90s. It has a 909 and sampling trickery revering part of the vocal.
My feelings on this being a shorter version on the wcd tour are these, it was never as epic a song like domino or home by the sea, the middle section although atmospheric is a bit meandering for an audience to go through, especially if the band had spike and fading lights already in the wcd set, so the shortened version was a nod to playing the hit tune and seguing into I T. Was the only way it was going to be played at all...
The emphasis on genesis live qas always to play as much from the newest album... it could have been dropped completely on the wcd tour, glad they didnt though...
Top song scott, especially the 12" mix, love the aggressive electric drums, superb and really hammer spectacularly,
drives me wild😃
The version of 92 was down a half step or two to preserve Phil's voice. Once they did that the song lost all the feeling on the keys. I always preferred the 86 version.
Musically I love this song, l just feel the lyrics fall short of the mark and there is some over repetitiveness. Song needs a more significant chorus and the “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” part would have been better as a secondary or sub chorus.
