I loved "Playing for Time" when it came out but it struck a chord with me for sentimental reasons as it was the 2nd anniversary of my mother's death and the 5th anniversary of my husband's passing was approaching, among others' interspersed. During the concert last September, attending the concert alone, 2 seats beside me remained empty the whole time. I felt in a way they were both with me in spirit seated beside me.
Looking forward to your take of "And, Still" that Peter wrote in tribute to his mum.
What I love about your channel is how different your perspective on music is from mine a lot of the time, even though we share a love for Genesis, Phil and the other members. I didn't find i/o opaque at all, I think it's as accessible lyrically as So. I do think it fits on the album, because there's a dark, wistful tinge to it, that is repeated in other songs. That said, I'm 58, and it does indeed speak to me in a way it may not to someone younger. I'd love to hear your take on the song he did for Gremlins, Out, Out.
Agree with all of your observations. At a 60+ yo, this song struck a massive chord with me and I remember listening to it non-stop in the car travelling to and from work for a week. The “cinematic ending” is huge and makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up. Perhaps for this song it was important for it to be more literal. I’m glad he was in this instance.

If we are all being honest. I/O isn’t that good of an album and the songs are quite boring.
Can you honestly put this up there with the like of Melt, Security, Us, So or Birdy & Passion for instance?
Agreed. Bought the album and just today sold it at a used CD shop, got ELO's Discovery and some change. I/O sounds like Christian Cringey Pop in places....Not good.
