This antenna is so simple to make: 41' radiator 17' counterpoise I use SOTABeams wire, however any multi strand wire will do. Fit the connectors of your choice, hook up to a 9:1 and plug it straight into your radio. For QRP, no balun or coax needed. Enjoy! #adventure #hamradio #portableradio #SOTA #HF #multiband #QRP #SOTA

Brecon Beacons or Black Mountains always seemed to be shrouded in mist and low cloud, so we would pick out an object on our bearing and walk to tthat, then pick out another feature and so on. Great video, Fraser...your flight looks a lot more enjoyable than the usual airport/plane "experience"! The journey from Birmingham International to Welshpool is one I've done many times, I camp at Severn Farm which is about 5 minutes walk from the station if you turn left on the bridge at the top of the slope instead of right. I have walked from there up onto Long Mountain and had a go at activating GW/MW-026 a couple of times on 2m, but the intermod from the transmissions up there is pretty fierce...next time, I'll try the FT-60. The Welshpool and Llanfair steam railway used to run right past where Ben picked you up...I've ridden the steam train from Raven Square to Sylfaen and walked up to the top of Y Golfa to activate GW/NW-061. Must get up there again soon, its a lovely place. Thanks for the cool video! Always interesting to see range tests with HT antennas. I did 131 miles with my Yaesu FT 60, Comet quarter wave whip with a tuned counterpoise from about 1000 feet into a repeater/net that is about 3000 feet. Cheers!

That is a good effort. Great fun experimenting on 2m. Even better when there's a chance of others on summits at the same time.

Thank you for that! I had amusing difficulty on one of my very first summits when I was next to a doppler installation. So I got a filter, and took a few radios up a summit that had 3 towers. Amusingly my VX-7R and Anytone 878 UV II+ had no issues without the filter, but the older Alinco I had with me received absolutely nothing, and I had the same issue of forgetting the right antenna adapter for the filter.

I did my Foundation during lockdown and passed but it was all a solo effort using YT and books. But once passed I lost interest b/c I didnt really have an idea what do next and all the local clubs were dug in behind closed doors for the duration. Fast forward I was looking to sell up so got the kit out to test and found I was still interested especially in home brew and outdoors just like you did there. Great interesting way to enjoy the hobby. What battery did you use/recommend?

@@theradiorover Thanks for the reply Fraser I have a Icom 706Mk2 I think its recommended at 13.8V and of course I'll not be using it full power of 100W just the 10W. Currently using a 8 channel Mag Loop with remote tuning but as I mentioned the subject here is more in line with what Id like to try

@@utkf16 LiFePO4 batteries are really good. They are lightweight and have a really flat discharge curve. They start at 14.2v but quickly drop to 13.8v and pretty much sit there until they're done. I use an 8400mAh one from Hobbyking. It's branded Zippy. If you're not lugging your radio up hills, a bigger one would be a better option for your radio.

I have a Jackery power station have you heard of these been suitable? Just had a reply from a local club regarding membership and I'm joining them next meeting so looks like I'm back on course. Thanks again Fraser, all the best and thanks for your time

Great stuff, Fraser...things like SOTA, HEMA and 145Alive prove that good old fashioned 2m FM can be huge fun without spending huge amounts. I get the impression that a lot of people don't routinely monitor their local repeaters and simplex calling frequencies...oddly, I've often found 4m more productive, perhaps because people are surprised to hear a call(!). Something that seems increasingly common is the simplex "club channel" where a group of mates chat locally, this is all well and good but if you're from outside the area or whatever, it tends to be somewhat exclusive, especially as the actual activity is often pretty brief, so may not be picked up while scanning or tuning through the band...and if many in an area are just listening on that channel then the calling frequency becomes pretty much obsolete. I'm hoping to become a lot more active once we've moved to Herefordshire, i should be able to put up some sort of VHF/UHF omni and the house were hoping to buy has a reasonable take-off in some directions, plus there are several summits locally. 73, G0CIQ

Hi. 🙂 After speaking to you (mobile) this afternoon, I watched this old video and - as you say - I heard you chatting to myself on VHF. I do actually remember that QSO and discussing 1m SDS drill bits (I really do need to get out more; hihi). I did eventually get these feeder tubes drilled (5 mm to spare on the 1 m SDS bit) but I've yet to replace the VHF feeder with a shorter one. Since then, I've also upped the available power and improved my transmit audio, so it'll be fun to compare results the next time that we speak on VHF from that same drafty hilltop. 😀
