  • Here I describe in detail how much ham radio gear can be taken as carry on luggage onto an aircraft. I also tell you what to leave in the hold. ie stuff that could be construed as a weapon and therefore not suitable for carry on.

Wow... I'm just back from a week in EA8 having only taken an under-seat bag. It was just too tight to take even the little QMX radio. Next time, I'll show the station manager this video before we go 😂

😄🤣 Ronan, I usually travel light. On this occasion we had a great luggage allowance so I just went for it! Next trip abroad is in March and it will be back the kx2 and a wire.

Impressive to see you got all that kit through security without at least some questions. Feels like a lot of redundancy in there but I guess you were travelling a long way. I only take a minimalist skeleton setup abroad, but it does leave me at risk of any cables/antenna failures. I normally leave antenna in the hold but never really had any issues. Only once I had a few questions about my ft-818. Best 73 Steve MW0SAW

I had the luggage allowance on this flight, so just took a load of stuff. I'd planned on doing more FT8 POTA with the QDX but never got round to it. Next trip will be a kx2 and a piece of wire. 😀

@@theradiorover If you have a hire car makes little different, but I have done a few trips where we had to take all our luggage on public transport. Multiple trains, buses and plenty of walking. So I could only get the carbon 6 past the station commander in the hold cases. 😆

@stevewheatstone1856 When we go to the US, we generally hire a decent sized SUV and practically live out of it for a couple of weeks. We usually camp but didn't this time, so more room for radios 😀👍

Thanks for showing us your equipment! I usually travel much lighter, because I have to carry all the stuff of my fellow travelers 😂.

Hi Stephan, Yes, I'm with you! I usually travel light. We had a generous luggage allowance on this trip and as I'd planned on doing POTA, WWFF and not much SOTA, as well as a little experimenting, I thought, "Why not?"
We're going to Geneva in March and I will maybe do just one summit, so back to minimum kit.
      Happy New Year! 😊

@@theradiorover Hi Fraser, all understood! Yesterday when I was past the security at the Barcelona airport (as usual, no problem with my SOTA equipment at all) I wrote about your upcoming visit to Geneva. Since I used links, it was deleted by Google, so I sent you private reflector message.
      Happy New Year as well!

My cabin bag with radios got pulled up at security in Heathrow whilst on way to US. They really didn't care about the radios, just the battery I had. Once they saw it was okay size (in Watt Hours), I was on my way with no issues 👍
My HT didn't have US frequencies for 2m, but I found a code online to enable (and disable) it to transmit "out of band".

Interesting! Some of my batteries weren't labelled watts/hour, so I did the calculation and put printed labels on them. Of the five flights, my bag was pulled and swabbed once, because it looked "busy" under the scanner.

    Holy Moly Man!
I don't even own that much Ham Radio gear!
Ive only ever travelled with one battery.... I wonder is the 150wh limit per battery ( ie take as many as you like under 150wh), or 150wh total with all batteries included?
Let us know where you bought the smaller sectioned bag though too please!
And of course.... Nice video 😁.

Cheers Dave! The 150 w/h limit is per battery with British Airways and I think you are allowed 15 batteries overall, but that includes phones, toothbrushes etc...
I think k the bag cost £30 from amazon. I'll have a look for the link. I actually used everything I took, except for the amp and the qdx. Oh, and the spare hand helds 🤣
