A beautiful place. I was at a sprint track in Staffordshire not long ago where some of the rally lads were doing testing for the Mull Rally. Thank you for another great video. M0DSK
I've been going to the rally for 18 years and doing recovery for the last 10 of them. I'm not brave enough take a rally car around those roads.. and at night too!
Haven't been to Mull for a long time. I didn't have a radio with me the last time, I was looking at sea eagles. That feeling when you crest a ridge to reach the summit and.... there's another ridge to climb.
I caught a glimpse of a SeaEagle on the way up this hill and there are otters around Loch na Keal shoreline. Just Ravens at the top though. It wasn't as bad as it looked. I just hammed it up a bit for TV. 🤣
@@theradioroverI took the grandchildren up the coast from Lochaline on the mainland, We were staying at Rahoy in Morvern and we saw sea otters at the Cloch na Criche car park right opposite the airstrip at Glenforsa on Mull. I miss having the motorhome, it was so easy just to go and do radio in distant places. My local SOTA summit is on flat farmland, in the middle of a ploughed field. The trig point is on a tumulus covered in large trees. Not exactly great for radio, and a terrible takeoff for UHF and up. G/TW-004, Bishop Wilton Wold. It just looks like a totally flat area, but the trig point is a few metres higher than the plain around Trees block the horizon in a lot of useful directions. How far away from the actual summit can an activation be? The land drops by only a couple of metres over almost a mile in each direction!
@MachiningandMicrowaves Neil, looking at sotl.as shows that summit is very popular. The AZ is anywhere within a 25m vertical drop of the summit. I suspect you could set up beside your car in this case. The station can't touch your vehicle or be powered from it. You've visited some lovely and wild places with your grand children. Hopefully they appreciate it. 😊 73, Fraser MM0EFI
Great video Frazer, and the views wow, I used to climb every weekend in the lakes or Scotland, unfortunately my age stopped that now, but if you thing it's good over there, try this wee country hi. Good luck mate, zl3xdj
Yes, this one is a 41' radiator and a 17' counterpoise laid on the ground under the antenna. It is fed via a home made 9:1. It does the job on 40 through 10m. Rumour has it 60m and 80m will work too, but I've never tried.
Thank you Fraser, much appreciated, very useful for a novice like me! I'm just trying to get a 'basic' set-up sorted, to try while i continue my munro bagging. Getting the right setup is a bit of a minefield, just a setup that would be reliable to get some activations in most conditions in the highlands. Your videos are very useful.@@theradiorover
@TerminalSump I'm glad they are of help. The 41' wire and 9:1 is certainly the simplest way to go if you have a radio with a tuner. Alternatively a 67' EFHW and 49:1 works well with no tuner on 40, 20, 15 and 10m due to being resonant on those bands. If you need any help give me a shout.
Thank you, much appreciated. Im just sorting a transceiver, would love a Kx2 but cant find one, maybe next time i visit the states. Probably just go for a second hand 817 or maybe an IC-705 to get started. Either way likely no tuner, so i should look at 67' EFHW and 49:1. Or maybe a 10m/20m/40m linked dipole ? @@theradiorover

Wow....that was nice, Frazier.... Quite athletic....!!!!
I was breathing hard most of the time going up there. At least the ridge was a bit easier going!

Nice and wide open views makes for good take off angles. until the next one. '73 Fraser de Kp4GR--- Norber
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed the views. I did. 🙂
Lovely looking location and great views
Yes, a special place. Especially around Loch na Keal on the west coast of the island.
Love the West Coast, another great vid and some good radio 🙏

Thanks. West is Best when the weather is OK. 👍
Not jealous at all. You had a cracking pile up, but there was also deep QSB at times. Cracking vid Fraser. Thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I did. One of my favourite outings of the year so far.
beautiful landscape
It is!! It helps when the wx is nice too 🙂👍
Beautiful part of the world. I really must make the effort and have a holiday up there! 73!
Mull is probably my favourite island. It has a bit of everything. Unfortunately it also rains a lot 😕. Worth it when you get a good day though.
Good video and what a stunning location. The ascent looked quite steep and false summits are so annoying sometimes!

Thanks Chris! Yes, the summit was right at the back of the ridge. It did not look so lumpy on the map. Good hike though. 😀
Very nice views, thanks for showing us!

Cheers Stephan. Mull is a lovely island with some rugged little hills. Put it on your list 😀
@@theradiorover I will, but plan to climb it only in summer 🌞😉.

HI Fraser, nice to see you on mull. Do you use (or need to) a counterpoise on the random wire and how do you rig this ? Thank you in advance.

@TerminalSump yes, I started with a dipole, just with 40m and 20m. With qrp it doesn't need a balun where the legs join the coax, so simple to make.
You could have driven the landie up there, no problems 👀
Ha!! Maybe A few years ago, I would have tried. 🙂👍
There is Probably no path to climb. VE6KBI Dana
Ha!! I found the path on the way back, well most of it. 🙂
