I managed to do a couple of POTA activations in Virginia (W4) whilst on a work trip, whilst my work colleagues explored the parks.
I also did a few sessions from my hotel car park, having some rag chews with some very welcoming US hams wanting to chat to a UK ham aboard, and being really interesting in unusual call sign.
It really enabled me to enjoy the hobby whilst away on work.
In my limited experience I'd say that many more hams monitor 2m in the US. I couldn't send a spot from the top of Mount Evans (now Mt. Blue Sky) but I still had a pile up on 2m. I don't do much POTA, so this was a nice change, with a bit of history thrown in.

Great video Fraser, I travel a lot with with and doing SOTA/POTA remote is my motivation for a full license. I was reminded of the old DOS game when I seen the Oregon Trail sign. All the best for 2024 when it comes, hopefully get you in the log next year! Chris 2M0NZB

Good video Fraser! I tried also POTA this summer in VE7. Unlike in Europe, it produced a lot of confusion with my exotic call. I finally decided to enjoy the sunset instead. SOTA was much easier going.

Great job! And very jealous of the weather 😂. I plan to do something similar when I visit the US in Feb. I’m a bit confused as to why you seem to be changing your callsign from K to W prefix and then back again a few times. Is this just a a slip, or something you are supposed to do? Trying to learn about the procedure in advance of my trip, and thought you are supposed to stick to your location.
Yes, my head was a mess with callsigns for a bit. W0 for Colorado. W7 for Wyoming. There's a list of prefixes on the ARRL website. If you're not able to find it, let me know and I’ll send a link over. In the US no one uses the /p suffix, so I dropped that fairly quickly, as my callsign was a mouthful as it was!
