I thought there were some great images in the book. The editing supported the colourful techno world of Tokyo. I wasn't sold on the manipulated and digitally layered images as I bought the book thinking that it was pure 'street' style. Also there are a large number of images, I think 250. When making way through the book the images/compositions began to repeat themselves. There were a lot of looking down the alley shots with no real subject matter other than the alley itself. From my perspective the series would have been stronger with far fewer photos included. In the end I returned the book thinking that I could use the money better elsewhere and I bought Bruce Gilden's Cherry Blossum.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As you say it's not street photography, I think knowing about Liam's professional life helps make sense of it. What did you think of Cherry Blossom? I love Bruce Gilden :)

Its a pretty cool book but it lacks any story, he nailed the style he wanted, irrespective of using any editing techniques or not. Maybe the lack of any strong subjects could be a reason why I couldn't as much empathize with it. The use of colour and light is great. It's got okay compositions nonetheless. Take away the editing on the pictures and most of them would look common to the Tokyo people atleast. But as they've mentioned in the foreword, its Liam's world, so the edits in addition to his photography is what makes it whole and stylish

Ansel Adams met Paul Strand in New Mexico and Strand showed Adams some of his negatives: Ansel was blown away by the quality of these, the range of tones and the luminous shadows, and drew inspiration from the standard of work he was shown. I see the same quality in the selection of images in that collection. Much appreciated!

I like Martin Parr’s work… he has a good eye. I used a fill-in flash in bright sunlight, to lift the shadows a few stop below the exposure, in my BTEC photography diploma… yes I admit it, in the early 90’s, I imitated his technique. Visually, I liked the effect it brings to colour photography. Also, New Brighton is my home town… so I remember what it was like back in the 80’s; the prolific littering, of holiday makers, in particular. I miss New Brighton baths; and, feel the local council have stolen them from us, just so they can put up supermarkets instead… blaming it on the weather. Pathetic. However, I don’t recall the orange shorts on naked kids though… what’s that about? It’s insulting to Parr’s integrity. Sorry, but I don’t agree with unnecessary censorship. Just don’t include those photos, if you’re so easily offended by naked kids. Personally, I loved the freedom of running around butt naked, as a kid, myself; there’s nothing wrong… it’s perfectly natural. Allow children have their childhood… before their innocence is lost to the shame of adult social programming. Those who make an issue about it are the only one’s who should be ashamed. The truth is, that’s what people did in those days… they allowed their children to be free. Super imposing orange shorts only makes a lie of the Zeitgeist of the time. Apart from your obvious fear of the UA-cam censors, it’s an interesting video.
