Building the last B-36
United States
Приєднався 23 бер 2007
The documentation of scratch building a full scale Convair B-36H Peacemaker.
This build is based on historical aircraft 50-1083 in the state it would have been where leaving the factory in May of 1952.
Without manufacturing drawings (blueprints) I have built from scratch, everything you see but the seat(s), gauges, oxygen and communication panels.
This project is expensive and here is the only way you can help:
1. Please create and login to UA-cam.
2. Click on LIKE and SUBSCRIBE.
3. Ask and/or demand your friends, family and anyone who is interested in aviation (or watching some guy in central West Virginia attempt to do airplane stuff) to do the same.
As much as I appreciate it, simply watching these videos doesn’t do a whole lot in terms of helping me purchasing aluminum, steel, fasteners, abrasives, paint and on and on.

At this point I’d been exploring this aircraft and the rest of the museum (on minimal sleep) for several hours and was quite tired.
Hence my moans and groans.

Correction: SUPER CHATS = SUPER THANKS. UA-cam takes a considerable cut from Super Thanks donations and it can take a month or more for much needed and appreciated funds to hit my bank account. Please donate via my GoFundMe link on my channel’s main screen. $5 goes along way and puts a big smile on my face, especially during the oppressively hot and slow selling days of the summer. Is that the plane they're building almost from scratch? If so, where did they obtain the parts and pieces?
This is a restoration of a complete aircraft that was assigned to this museum over 60 years old. I’m the guy building from scratch. Please see my other videos.
Very cool. Thanks for the video
1:13 Unusual unit installed in that ART-13 LFO enclosure.
There are several inaccuracies….
Very good...could have been much better had there been some lights to see what we are seeing....
Agree. I was in a different state of mind when I filmed this three years ago.
Just found out that there is plastic model kit of the B-36 in 1/48 scale. That thing has to be huge!
Far too hurried to see any real detail.
I agree. It’s just something I’ve had and thought I’d post. More to come.
Nice interior tour of the mighty B-36
Looking great!!
So fluffy
Military pilots are skinny and small, those cockpits were tiny. C130 has plenty of room. 🎉
So glad they’ve saved this important piece of history.
Its amazing how the B-36 makes the B-52 look kind of small. Ive been to Ashland 4 or 5 times now and the '36 is always impressive. Love the SR in the atrium too
There's nothing for it; you're going to have to get a bigger garage!
Question: how did you make the transparent part of the astrodome? I would like to build a canopy replica of fighter jet, but i have no idea how to make the plexi-glass curved (i was thinking about heating it up and then work with it a bit)
The astrodome is an original. It’s entirely possible that it and canopies were made using vacuum forming. Keep in mind that older canopies are thinner layers that are glued together to make a thick surface. This process is called laminating. The glue that was used was perfectly transparent, however it turned yellow over time when exposed to the sun. This is why museum airplanes stored outside have their canopies painted.
@@B36HPeacemakerAlright, thanks for letting me know. Good luck with the project!
So cool.
Lucky You 👍👍👍
You got to do something I have wanted to do for 35 years. Thank you for videoing it for us, the toilet that was cool.
Very cool! I've been to the museum and was impressed by the exterior. That's great that the museum has made the interior available for viewing too (at least to a degree). Thanks for sharing.
Id love to get inside a B-36 and the Xb-70
Hey I work at SAC! Glad you got to step inside our bird! I got to take a gander around the inside a few weeks ago and she is beautiful!
do you mean the SAC museum? if you guys open that up on a regular basis i would love to come down there to look at your plane, i have not been there in years at this point.
@@__ASAAA that’s the thing. We don’t really open her up for just anybody. I think you have to really talk to restorations ahead of time and plan it out.
@@BigBoiLoses well, I’ve been a staff member at an air museum in northwest Iowa for two years now. We have a similar policy tho. Our 727 cockpit is only open when someone (usually me) is up there just to make sure no one steals or breaks anything. Pretty sad that that’s the way it has to go though.
Okay, now for ultimate realism you need to mount your cockpit on the roof of your house.
Earlier I suggested he mount it on a VW bug chassis and use it around town as his daily driver.
Great video! Got the awesome chance to climb inside the RB-36H on display over at Caslte Air Museum CA a few months ago.
If you don’t like me cutting my grass at 9pm and quiet hour isn’t till 12am… you can cut it at 5pm for me lol
I really appreciate this video it really puts your ambitious project into perspective. Your ability to create is admirable I hope you achieve the goal you have in mind. My Dad was in the air force in 1985-1989 maybe he’d seen one of these at some point who knows.
I love watching your updates on this project and think this is a very cool idea. This has inspired me to (hopefully at some point) make a large paper model b36
What scale are you considering?
@@B36HPeacemaker I’m not entirely sure, but I can send you the link to it
@@Shockwave3877 Is it the commercially available one with the printed paper? Looks around 1/72, if so.
@@B36HPeacemaker I think it is, I am going to modify it a bit and thanks for confirming the scale
Looks great, keep going, build the entire front half of the plane
Will do! Send money and we’ve got a deal!
i just found this on my home page, i subscribed to see the journey, but are you going to build the whole plane or just the cockpit, or what exactly?
I came to UA-cam to raise funds to continue building. The more funds I receive the more I will build. It would take millions of subscribers to build the entire airplane. It’s not impossible, but don’t hold your breath.
You need to write a book about all of these inaccuracies. I’m sure it would be a best seller & would be just flying off the shelves.
One step ahead of you.
She's a beaut!
If memory serves, you entered the nose through the nose wheel well. There was a pressure door on the rear, and you entered the radio compartment at 'floor" level. The blister would always be closed except for emergencies. Do let me know if my memory has lapsed.
There were two entrances, one of which was via the nose gear comportment door as you stated. You could also enter via the lower forward hatches when a ladder/stairs was used. These hatches were originally gun sighting blisters but were done away with and kept as entrance hatches on both sides of the nose until the H model came around.
Are you going to built the functioning plane in its entirety or a mock-up?
I’m building the entire aircraft as soon as the funding gets here. However, as a backup plan I’m just building the upper nose.
@@B36HPeacemaker You would need an area of about...an NFL football field (maybe 2?), as well as the airspace above it, due to the rudder. The really tricky part would be towing it through the city! LOL
@@Name-ps9fx lol. Money makes airplanes fly as well as towed thru cities.
Looks good - Designer Henry Dreyfuss would be impressed.
@@johnwatson3948 You appear to be correct in that it was his firm who designed the raised flight deck. Interesting stuff….
While they designed the overall layout always wondered what input they had on the canopy and frame pattern and how much they collaborated with Convair. An interesting photo on ebay shows an early mockup with a centered engineers panel and passages to the radio room on each side. Among many other things, Dreyfuss designed the handset and cradle telephone, the later trimline phone, and the round wall thermostat.
You've come a loooong way! I think it was worth the trip.
Can’t wait till the maiden flight.
Nice work 😎
It's a thing of beauty, and stupendous achievement, especially given the conditions you're working in.
Yeah, did you do that, Brian
Negative. That’s not my eating space.
Just amazing! Outstanding!
not sure what it is but make sure to operate it with an old xbox controller while submerging a few thousand feet in the ocean!
Season 2 of "Deadly Titanic Dives" has yet to air, but I understand they are getting ready to film.
Have you contacted Pima to see if they could send you the info from their example?
I am at a point I have essentially obtained all of the information I require.
that is amazing. this build amazes me so much.
She's so cute!
Great report on how the B-36 was scrapped!!
The Crew at General Dynamics if FtWorth wanted to restore theirs to Airworthy BUT, the USAF wouldn't allow it cuz it was still considered to be a modern enough Bombing Platform to constitute a threat 😞
There very well may be arcane legislation somewhere that prohibits an individual for possessing a nuclear capable aircraft, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there is not. It is my strong opinion that the USAF denied the restoration to flight of 52-2827 because of liability. The USAF was very well aware of the complexity and extreme hazards of a B-36 flying outside the exacting supervision and knowledge of the USAF, and did not want to provide an explanation to the people of this country when the “warbird” B-36 crashed at an airshow (or worse) and killed hundreds of people. Everything has a line that shouldn’t be crossed, and I am grateful the USAF didn’t allow the B-36 to cross it.
