    Hi Ben. To find a good trainer, are there any official qualifications to look out for ? I love your methods of teaching BTW, you make it so understandable and that’s what is needed as the owners need to understand as much as the dogs do.

    • @balanceddoguk
      @balanceddoguk 5 днів тому

      @@SiRhodesDriverTraining so here in the uk there is no official course or qualification you must have to be a dog trainer. And there are hundreds of different courses and acronyms for people do put on their name. Unfortunately a lot of the time this is not a good representation of whether or not a dog trainer is good or not. Much like having a driving licence doesn’t make you a good driver 😅. Definitely look for trainers that share their work so you can see them handling dogs and talking to clients so you can know if you’re choosing the right person.

For me personally I have always tried to post as much content as I can on social media platforms to show my work, my methods and thoughts on different aspects of Dog Training. This is what forms sort of portfolio for my potential clients to get a good idea of who I am and how I train before they, decide to invest in me as a trainer so I would recommend choosing somebody based on that. If she sees those and incoming cars my BC lost all focus on me. Can even stand in front of her like right in her face, she wont even look up to me for one second. The moment the birds/cars are gone, she's snaps out of it and looks up again. Love her and love training her. just that is a super struggle still and dont know how to improve that as well as her AND me. Anyway, thanks for putting your vidoes here man !!!

      Thank you! When I next have a dog in that does this type of behaviour I will make a video about it. But for now I would first focus on the heel and the engagement making sure it is as close to 10/10 I could get it when there was no distraction. Once you have this as a baseline you can then use ur lead to interrupt the behaviour as soon as she goes to fixate on the trigger. You will likely need to be firm on the lead to break focus and regain attention. You may want to use a different collar and lead setup and I would recommend trying to find a trainer to help you in person with this one. It requires a good understanding of the dogs specific behaviour, good timing and skill on the lead to overcome this type of thing so definitely see if you can get some help from a trainer.

    Well said! Are they resting on a table? They're basically puppy piling back there. Rather interesting, I've had an easier time introducing new dogs if they're male, although yeah it's often that males start sizing each other up when they meet, even if they are following my rules. It's the females I have had to be extra careful with regarding their interactions with other female dogs, especially if they're the same size. I don't love intervening if two females pick a fight with each other. Males are a bit easier to stop. They're not aiming to inflict much harm. It's usually more noise than something truly serious. Those were my live and learn moments from ages ago. I do not let dogs get into any situation to trigger a fight. I completely get what you're talking about here. Young male dogs can have a tendency towards being goofs. They do take longer to mature. Females can often leap ahead faster with training, and they tend to remain very non-distracted when working. Your plan of action to develop these dogs is ideal. Good observations and advice.

    Canine males, like human males, have a little longer adolescence, are a little slower to develop bladder control, and are often quite a bit larger than their female equivalent. That creates a lot of frustration for owners (and some parents…) during the 6-18 month adolescent period. OTOH, adult male dogs are often cuddlier while the females are a little more independent. A lot of performance competitors prefer males because once they’ve matured, they’re more trainer focused. I like them both!

    I'm sitting here smiling because what you're talking about reminds me of when I used to work in an institution where young men were taken when they, among other things, had a problem with the word "No", being told no, that is. They had an impulse control of a toddler and that got them into trouble. That in combination with that they often were quite tall and carried around a bunch of muscles, didn't do them any favours when they were trying to interact with other people. For some reason they always ended up with me. The other staff members tried to stay away from them as much as they possibly could. I liked them and I think they could tell. What they didn't fully understand was that people could find them scary (they were quite scared themselves). I remember one incident when one of "my" boys wanted his money. They were kept in a locked cupboard since they couldn't handle money. They'd use all their money and when they didn't have any money left, to get cigarrettes for instance, they tried to force others to give them money. Like I said they didn't like the word no, so this young man started hitting me in the belly, not hard at all just to give some weight to his words. I told him "Stop hitting me, you frighten me!" He loked at me, startled, "Are you afraid of me? That's ridiculous!" Young male dogs and young males have a lot in common 😂

    Bro, yoy the best!Can you show us now how to manage our dog to bring back the ball?My puppy is 6 months old, runs like crazy when I throw a ball, comes back at me (50% of the time stops ik front of me, 50% of the time, stops way too far from me) and just lay then on the ground without opening her mouth.Then after a few minutes,she leaves the ball and goes away. Its very frustrating because I cant manage her to play that simple game properly 😂😂😂😅😢

    • @balanceddoguk
      @balanceddoguk Місяць тому

      Sooo this one can be tricky! What I like to try is this: throw the ball, as soon as they get to the ball I start jogging backwards which usually gets their attention and they try to catch up! Then just as they are about 3 quarters of the way to me I turn around and close the rest of the distance between us. I’ll then praise them with fuss and in doing this get hold of the ball or toy (should be on a rope if it’s a ball) and then ask for the “out”/“drop” then immediately throw the ball and keep that game going trying to not run backwards as far each time and reduce the amount of time it takes to actually get the ball back. In time the dog realises that the game is to come back and get it thrown again! Never chase them to get the ball and avoid going to them where they drop it or lay.

    My dog is a 3yo rescue gsd mix and I’ve worked with another older european street dog aswell and this is quality advice especially for stressed dogs. You have to manoeuvre between taking the dog’s focus on and off of yourself consistently to manage their stress levels and let them do their needs, decompress and stay collected and trusting of you in higher demand situations. First week with my dog she had her attention 99% on me at all times to the point she didn’t pee or poo because she was not used to being on lead and attached to a person. Encouraging her to sniff around and move independently is absolutely crucial at that point. When she’s gotten more trust in me and confidence in herself it’s time to switch to controlling the sniffing and movement in order to calm down after high excitement. Leaving the dog park after play (with me) for example she will be close to me because “reading the news” in that state is making her more stressed and less able to handle new situations that arise, play for a stressed dog is just as exciting and fun as it is intimidating a lot of the time. Removing factors for her to worry about and being clear that she only needs to consider what I’m doing (= walking forward) speeds up that decompression exponentially! It’s amazing what this does for adult stressed dogs.

    My 15-month Cockapoo has never once been able to settle out of the crate. He goes on daily heel walks, does nose work, plays tug, and knows place, sit, down and stay. He will just not sooth out of his crate.

      Try giving them less attention and have them do less activity outside of the crate. Likely that they are too mentally or physically active out of the crate so encouraging them to settle on a bed while out of the crate and drying times you can’t interact with them directly will help them To be calmer at home. The reason they won’t settle is because they have built up an expectation of play or attention. So when they don’t get it they stress out or act up until they get it. Do less of that so the expectation goes away
