Got my ACME whistle yesterday. My dog has never been so scared. He tucked his tail between his legs and hid behind the couch. It took him a good 30 minutes to come to me. Its being sent back tomorrow

Ben! I need your help with my Weim. He is 1.5 years old. I take him to the beach every day as our yard space is limited. We do recall and he comes every time, whistle and hand signal and verbal. Recall is well established even with other humans around. The moment he spots a dog, it is GAME OVER! Like yesterday, he zoned in, and we left the beach 2 hours later. Sky is a gem! So adorable.

Hey! So sounds like you have got the “good behaviour” (recall) down and it’s just the “undesirable behaviour” (running after dogs) you don’t want. So at this point now you focus on removing the undesirable behaviour and go out with your longline attached looking for the moment your dog goes into that zone. The second they point towards another dog, standing on the spot as the consider running over you need to grab the longline and pop it firmly saying “no” then you redirect them to follow you in a different direction. Depending on how many times your dog has rehearsed the unwanted behaviour you will have to do this a fair amount of times until you notice them either not wanting to run over because they keep failing or atleast making a better choice in those moments

Loving your videos! Do you have a whistle that you recommend? I have one but find it’s quite quiet! Also, how long would you usually spend putting in the groundwork with the whistle before trying it off lead in different environments? 😊

😊… I use Acme whistles. Most dogs will take to it super quickly! Definitely give it a few days and then start venturing out a bit more but keep the long line on until you feel like it’s solid!

Ben can you use a remote collar and also a whistle or best to use one or the other?

Using both together is awesome! The whistle is no different to your recall command in the way the dog understands it. What makes a whistle better than a command is how consistent it sounds and the sound travels further usually. So pairing the 2 is super effective!
