Double C and Upper Register on the leadpipe and trumpet - and better sounding high notes!
Sir, one of the reasons I stopped playing the trumpet years ago (besides a lack of talent) was struggling with the inability to develop an upper register. Having recently pulled the Bach out of moth balls, your advice is being employed. We shall see.
@@rickthornhill4133 that’s great. Please take a look in the section beneath the video where you can watch my MasterClass free. There’s a bunch of boloney out there about focusing solely on your embouchure. Forget that bad advice. It’s never going to help you. And those people aren’t doing anything in the “real world of music.” Well, at least I never see them around, which tells me everything I need to know.
Can you help me I can barely crack a high c. It seems the only way to play higher for me is to use more pressure and blow harder.
Appreciate your content! I’m an amateur player playing in musicals sometimes for a little stipend, often volunteer. One trouble I have is rehearsing on my own. A lot of times we don’t have rehearsal tracks or anything that matches our music. Or we won’t have the entre act or bows to listen to. Any tips on preparing for those numbers? Tia!
@@jamhanna79 yeah that definitely makes it challenging. For musicals I’m preparing, I often get a recording with a conductor camera to play along with before stepping into the hot seat. I think the best thing you can do is record your rehearsals and then play along with those recordings. It’ll help a lot. Especially if you are recording a run-through of each number. Unfortunately, there’s no way for you to really prepare before the first rehearsal, other than just practicing the sheet music!
@@jeremymilos thanks! Yeah that’s basically what I’ve been doing. It’s tough w amateur stuff cuz everyone is working on minimal time and money
Hi there, I'm really loving your videos and especially the insight in to the teaching of Bill Adam. I think I get that readiness to kick a ball or swing a bat engages your "chi" or "center". But this is my question....Is the same thing accomplished when using the "Astra Air Stream Trainer"? Does the "Air stream trainer " accomplish the same thing that you describe, but after using the "Astra Air stream trainer" you only have to "think/ visualise" the ball being lifted in its wooden cage in order to engage the "chi"? Is this the same line of thought from the Arnold Jacobs school with using the Inspiron to focus on getting the ball in the chamber floating/moving up (keeping the air moving through the bellows action of the lungs) rather than focusing on the muscles that are used to get the air moving?
I like this exercise. Never tried this one!
Can u write down the notes. Lovely exercise.
Hey Jeremy, it's Morgenroth. I love the "rest as much as you played." We will use that in our warmups.
Hey Paul! Cool! Thanks for checking out the video. I hope to hop on a zoom chat with you all sometime soon.
I've been really struggling for high notes and stamina. I have played this exercise religiously for ONE week and it has already made a massive difference. I haven't even changed key. I haven't even slurred! Just repeated the C Major version over and over for between 30-45 minutes each day. I'm genuinely amazed at the difference that its made, not only to my security on high notes and stamina but also tone.
Hey Richard, that’s really cool to hear how you’ve benefited from it so quickly. Bravo!
What's the deal with high notes on the trumpet? Unless they are done absolutely beautifully (which is super-rare), they sounds like mosquitoes on meth. Truly bad. I don't know why players even bother. They should stick to notes that sound good.
great vid. i’ll be trying this out! any tips on tone?
Yeah, just try to “float” the sound. Don’t force!
Very well done Jeremy, and wow, that’s some super important information there!
Awesome job Ruby!!! (Way to go Dad!)
Thanks, Mark! See you soon...
Thanks for taking your time to demonstrate your technique regarding upper register playing. At 75 I think that I am happy playing with my local band and doing the best I can with the little skills that I have. Again I applaude you for reaching out to trumpet players to help them achieve greater abilities,
Hey there, thanks for the nice comment! And I applaud you for continuing to do what you love! I have many people in my community that are your age, and these techniques are greatly helping them play with less effort in and out of the upper register. Give them a try and please let me know if they benefit you in any way. Best regards, Jeremy…
Thank you Jerry. Thank you for what you are doing here on your channel. Im 77 and started with cornet when I was 12 and played it for 3 years, but stopped because my embouchure did not devellop in a good way. Bad sound in the low register, cracking tones and poor attacks now and then. Nevertheless I could play up to high A above high C. Offcourse I studied long tones, slurring notes, intervals, staccato and all these things from the books. Later I v picked up the trumpet again, did all those exercises to train the embouchure, but no progress, but I played 10 years in a big orchesterI on the second chair. Then I stopped again, because of shoulderproblems. I v been with great trumpeters and teachers, but none of them can really tell me what I do wrong. They observe me, listen to me and they actionally can,t tell me what to do. Everything looks good, but I dont sound good sometimes. There are days that a part of my register sounds reasonable for a short time. I start on a G on the second line of the staff and play softly, whispering notes untill it sounds good and full as it should be. Then slowly higher and lower. But I also have "bad embouchure days", then ......well everybody knows about that. Maybe somebody wants to comment on this. I really would appreciate this. Thanks in advance
Hi Willem! I know it can be frustrating, but what I learned from William Adam helped me to overcome embouchure problems, and it will help anyone willing to try a new approach. The good news is that you can actually get better as you get older - Mr. Adam told me that in my very first lesson with him back in 1993, and he was 75 years old at the time... I put together a Free on-demand masterclass that addresses how to do exactly that. It's about an hour long and very thorough. You can take a look here: milostrumpetworld.com/registration If you enter your email address, you'll receive the link to view it Free, and you can even book a Free trumpet chat with me to talk further. Sound OK? Feel free to comment with any other questions!
Well Jeremy thank you for your kind and quick answer. I really appreciate that. In a few days I 'll go on Holliday and once I m back I like to have contact with you again. It's really frustrating when you see girls and boys from 10 years old playing Carnival the Venice almost perfectly. Children with a full big professional tone as if it a normal easy thing everybody can do. Anyway Jeremy... thank you for your kind reply.
@@willemoosterom2438 yes definitely reach out, and feel free to schedule a Trumpet Chat after you register to see the free video. I was able to get my daughter playing with a really beautiful tone. She started at age 9, and using these simple techniques, sounds wonderful. If it can work for a nine-year-old and 10-year-old, it can definitely work for you, and she’s playing daily for about 15 or 20 minutes!
@@jeremymilos Thanks again Jeremy for your friendly and quick reply. When I'm back I 'll contact you. Willem Oosterom
Thanks Jeremy that was a good lesson. I tried it. I just need to get beyond the High C now
Hi! As you continue to be able to hold the top notes out, you’ll find your range will start increasing as well 😊👍
I use a Dennis Wick 3C 16.75mm Cup is shallow. Still can not get highnotes past F above the pentagram. Would trying a 4C 16.50 be good?
I’m not familiar with the Denis Wick mouthpieces, unless they are for Cornet. I’m playing on something that’s pretty much middle of the road: Bach 3C.
Hi Jeremy Please send me the PDF of the Harry Glantz exercise you just demonstrated. As always you sound fantastic! Mid to high always full resonant sound I dream of having some day. Thank you again for your great short lesson videos. Larry Peltz PS Thailand is hot as always but moving into rainy season which helps to keep temps down.😂
I once had an Adam student mention that a double buzz was an indication that the body was approaching being in phase with the horn, and to best thing to do is to hear the sound out front more intensely. Did Charley or Mr. Adam indicate something similar to you?
Jeremy. Your daughter sounds great !!! Clear sound and terrific range. This makes me feel good.
Hey George! Thanks for taking the time to check it out…yep, she has some great things going on. Looking forward to working with you this year, too! See you soon.
Thank you!
You bet, thanks for checking it out!
Hi Jeremy, Great to see and hear you on this UA-cam video short. First, I'm in awe how you totally crush those Schlossberg studies, #s 97, 99, & 100. You are truly a Master. One thing, I searched my Bill Adam Tribute book for those Schlossberg studies, I couldn't find them. Can you tell me what pages they are in? I do like to use the Early, and Later Long Tones Routine as my warm ups. They're great. I hope you and your family are all doing well. Enjoying the beautiful spring season!
Would you say that you could do the Cichowicz flow studies for the same purpose and in a similar method?
Hey Jeremy! Great question. Yeah, I think some of those flow studies can be done in the same manner. The basic idea was to play with a beautiful, full sound, from the first note, to the top note (which you hold out long), and back to the starting note, without letting up on the energy as you descend. Schlossberg #95 was written that way, so I believe that's why Mr. Adam used that one...
@Jeremy Miloszewicz awesome! Thanks! So by "hold out long" do you mean hold until you have just enough air to make it back to the bottom with a good sound?
@@jeremyrhoads6899 yep, that’s right. But most importantly, don’t play on negative air (or what my teacher would call the “grunt muscle”). If you start running out of air, take a breath when you need to. It’s a way to start building long line endurance.
@@jeremymilos thanks for the tips! Really appreciate it!
@@jeremyrhoads6899 you bet!
Thank you, Jeremy, for new and fresh information. Your sound in all registers is as good or better than all players I've ever heard. Amazing!! At 82 years old and still love practicing and playing this the trumpet, I congratulate you. You're doing it right. I have to consider doing a Zoom lesson with you, when I can muster up the courage, best wishes, Mike.
Can anybody play a double C? Well, if you can really play trumpet in every other sense besides big range, and you’re in pretty good shape physically, you’ve got a good shot. Even Miles later in his career, standing wrong, horn pointing down-and he still played much higher than when he was younger, even if there weren’t any double C’s. He really wanted more range.
Energy. Nobody ever had a better upper register sound than Maynard, and he didn’t pinch his chops or arch his tongue. Compression’s great if you just want to hit the notes and don’t care about a big sound.
I totally agree! 🎺👍
Thanks for the comment! Hope you’re doing well…
The other plunger will play in tune if you make a hole in it like the Rampton mute has. Clark Terry showed our trumpet section to do that along with a nickel in the hole to adjust for different timbres/intonation. I believe this is what the master of the plunger Snooky Young also did. But I would still choose the Rampton plunger over any other, the sound is great. Kenny has what looks like a pin and a penny in the hole to adjust the sound like a valve. Cool vid! Thanks Jeremy!! Always great videos.
Hey John! Always great to hear from you, man! So cool that you got to meet Clark Terry and that he showed you and the rest of the section what to do. Are you out on a ship right now?
The hole doesn’t matter. The traditional mute is too small to play in tune.
Hi Jeremy, As Always thank you for your helpful tips and suggestions. I do a warm up including long tones and flexibility slurs, the 7 fingering sequence. But all this takes upwards of 50 minutes. Is that too much? And yes, I feel tired at the end. Also, what numbers of the Schlossberg are you playing? Thank you again for your great UA-cam short videos! Sincerely Larry Peltz
Hi Larry! How’s everything in Thailand? I think you’re fine doing your 50 minute routine… as long as you have time in the day to incorporate some music, lyrical studies, some articulations, you’ll be in good shape. I do Schlossberg 6, 31, 13, and 14 every day. I like those a lot 😊👍
If I could play those notes I wouldn't be watching this video....
I appreciate you watching my video, Stephen!
Beautiful
Thanks, man. Hope you’re well!
Very helpful- “singing” mindset.
Thanks! It is a great way to eliminate most problems…
Jeremy, What power and attack! Forever envious of you guys that hit that high stuff and master it. I am listening more to big band music and man did those backup trumpet players have power and range and effortless musicality-taken for granted by many listeners. Still in my infancy of trumpet playing now hitting 3 octaves of C.
So cool to see you playing in Phillips Hall!
Hey there! Yeah, I never watched my recital after performing it… Only just found it and looked through it recently. Definitely fun seeing Philips again!
Beautiful sound but your apartment must be really live......also, what microphone do you use for your home videos?
Bravo just beautiful
Thanks, Benjamin!!
You have that BANG at the start of each note. You can tell you’ve studied the Doc version from Trumpet Spectacular. Bravo!
Thanks Michael! This was such a long time ago. On this recital, it was after I performed the entire Hummel, Hindemith sonata, and Arutunian. Not an easy program. By the way, my favorite recording of Doc Severinsen doing this version was on a live concert where he performed with a high school band, or some college band, either in Arlington, or Evanston? I don’t really remember, but on the same program, he also did the Ralph Herman concerto. Amazing live recording, wow!
@@jeremymilos that’s a great Junior Program! And I think I know that live version of Doc and the Hermann. Is it this one? ua-cam.com/video/owGcGW68xu8/v-deo.html
@@MichaelWallMusic So cool you found that. I can tell within the first minute that this is a different recording. He must’ve performed that hundreds of times and I’m sure it got recorded in other places. I got my recording on audio cassette and Robert Baca gave me a copy way back when. It’s an amazing live concert.
@@jeremymilos I think I had the same tape because I also realized that was a different recording. My tape also had the Maltby ‘Trumpet Nocturne,’ which I love so much.
@@MichaelWallMusic yeah, that sounds right. Now I’m going to have to dig around to find my cassette tape!
Please do the same one with you playing skills now. Would be very inspiring!
Hey Erik, that’s actually a really good idea! Thanks!
As I am progressing as a new player of 6 months or less, I now have an ear for the “commercial sound backup at high register “ I never thought about before. I appreciate the skill it takes to do that.
Hi Paul! Hope you are well. I’m not 100% sure exactly what you mean by “sound back up.” would you mind clarifying for me? Thanks!
@@jeremymilos ua-cam.com/video/B-8kLo0CQPk/v-deo.html Jeremy, I am sorry I am a neophyte and don’t know the correct music vocabulary. This is an example where the horn section accompaniment is in a higher range than the solo. At that 8 measure rest. The horns are muted but have that bright sharp swing band sound. I too love your sound. I just keep dreaming “ Maybe one day I will have that sound!”
@@paulmullins4676 Ah, now I get it. “Backing up” the soloist. By the way, that goes, sounds really fluid, and really nice. Even when I’m playing in the upper register, I’m trying to think of that type of lyricism. If you’ve ever listened to doc, Severinsen, you’ll know what I mean! Happy to recommend something if you like, just let me know!
Awesome sound. When I was in HS, my private teacher (an Adam student) lent me some UWEC cds. Blew me away. Stay fired up!
Oh, that’s nice to hear! And right back at you 🔥!!
This is lovely - thank you
Thank you, Ruari!
I care less about my ability to play high than my ability to sound like that. That's the lesson you should be giving.
Hey, thanks for the idea 😊 I like to think of using hot air for every note that I play. It tends to help the sound “float,” be relaxed, and then the range is just an added benefit.
back in the '70's & '80's, Doc was at his peak-I got to hear him LIVE a few times-fantastic player to say the least. Unlike Maynard, Doc wasn't a "natural", he was like the rest of us "mortals" i.e., he had to work for it and develop it. He was obsessed with the Trumpet and equipment. In truth, I often only watched the Tonight Show for Doc & The band...miss those days...
I’m with you on that! I used to watch The Tonight Show only hoping to hear Doc play…
So clean & wonderful sounding!
Thanks for the nice compliment!
Exercises such as those are great - but FIRST it is necessary to learn how to play them slowly, to learn HOW to play the desired pitch. 'Muscle memory' is what needs to be obtained - through training and practice. Be able to 'hear' or 'imagine' the note's pitch and IMMEDIATELY have the 'trained reflex' of fingering, embouchure, air, etc.
In addition to the words and description - WATCH the physical actions during playing (eyebrows too) starting at 2:40 .
And I’m not raising my eyebrows to play the High notes . It’s more that I might be running out of air, and it’s a natural result that that happens.
Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your professional studies with us.
Thanks for the kind words, Ruari!
Incredible!
Thanks, Barry! The videos get better over the course of time!
Awsome👏🎼🎶🎵🎺
Thanks, Dave!
I doubt Ruby knows how incredibly blessed she is to have a father / trumpet teacher as she has. I'm a 75 years old working on being a 'come back player' who suffered my first trumpet lessons with my father, who was incredibly impatient with me as a ten year old boy. I dreaded going down to our basement practice room with my dad as he tried to teach me how to count by pounding my leg, and being angry with me. I did want to please him, and in my youth struggled with all kinds of issues, anger and anxiety with the horn, though I loved the sound of a beautiful trumpet. I could never have an open free sound and had zero upper register range I so desperately wanted. I so wish I'd had a teacher like you Jeremy. But here I am, 75, and haven't given up on the dream to one day play with beautiful expressive sound and range to play high C, maybe even E, but perhaps that might be asking too much. Thank you for your inspirational UA-cam videos. You're a brilliant player and teacher. Sincerely, Larry Peltz
Hey Larry! Sorry to hear that backstory… I always try to make our music time enjoyable. It’s serious, but fun and enjoyable. If you follow my Tips, you’ll get results pretty quickly. If you haven’t already clicked on my links and downloaded the freebies, please do so because there’s more good stuff coming soon… Best regards, Jeremy
@@jeremymilos Hi Jeremy, Thank you so very much for your kind reply to my post. I should add an important PS. My dad being my first trumpet teacher was surely a double edged sword. Yes he was harsh and impatient with my playing efforts, and yet because of his deep love for the trumpet and music especially jazz, he engendered in me a love for trumpet and music. I will never forget how excited he was when he brought home the newly released LP, Tempestous Trumpet by the immortal Doc Severinsen, I think 1962. Jeremy I made a poster of your 5 keys to improved trumpet playing and have it on my music stand. Before practice I read and memorize these great bits of instruction. So thank you again. Please keep me posted when you have new You Tube clips! Sincerely, Larry Peltz
Wow she sounds great👏🎺
Amazing what 15 to 20 minutes a day can do!
