In this video, I talk about the idea that energy is a more relaxed concept than compression. Often times, people who get into compression lack the relaxation necessary to produce a singing sound throughout all registers, whereas those who focus on energy, gain all the benefits without resorting to a special mouthpiece for the upper register only.

I am going to begin to play again with a 55 year plus time off! Yep, I am old but now retired have time to learn and practice. Bought a new horn after giving my 1937 Silver Conn with a gold inside bell to my son. Pan playing a flute is engraved on the outside.
Getting a grad student in trumpet to coach me back.
    Thanks

Hey paul! That is fantastic that you’re coming back to the Trumpet now! Great idea to work with someone in person. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! I have a really fun technique that helps people start playing with a really relaxed and full sound in one of my videos… Check it out if you have a chance!

High and loud pitches do require more air pressure to play. And technically, air pressure IS energy. (Actually, pressure is energy density meaning; energy = pressure x volume). We do raise the energy state of the air (the pressure of the air in our body) when we engage in the exhalation action using the muscles you describe. The more intensely the exhalation action the greater the energy of the air we have in the body.
Notes above high C are progressively less efficient AND the hearing response is progressively decreased in that frequency range. This requires doubly progressively more air pressure and therefore exhalation effort, as notes ascend above high C.
Abdominal "tension" is from engaging in exhalation and inhalation actions concurrently and against each other. And I agree, that destroys the energy of the air in the body while requiring excessive effort. One should engage in the exhalation effort ALONE to increase the air pressure, uhm, .. energy.
We also have an air energy contribution from elastic or "residual" pressure when we are FULL of air. This reduces the exhalation action required to achieve the desired pressure but it does not last for a note or phrase of significant length.
Also, Jeremy, to comment on one of your other videos. The trumpet does not use "conversational" breath. Because of the high impedance of the instrument versus the low impedance of the vocal mechanism, the trumpet requires considerably less air flow and/or considerably more air pressure than for general conversation. A low brass instrument, played at a low pitch and low dynamic would more likely use breath similar to "conversational".
I also tire of the incessant use of the term "compression" as you mentioned. Part of trumpet player trope, Haha. Oft used in a VARIETY of ways but rarely accurately defined or appropriately used. And, as for "air-speed", don't get me started!
    take care

Aye! Love this tip here! I’ve taken a month off the trumpet & been working strictly on air and sound concept! This ties in real nice 👍🏽

Hey, that’s great! It’s amazing how quickly everything falls back into place when you are aware of that energy point… and you don’t let it up!

@@jeremymilos and u handle it with grace. I can just hear the cats who studied with him correcting the fuck out of people who have only heard of the legendary Bill "Adams"... "It's Adam motherfucker, A -D- A- M" great content btw my friend. This episode was great and made a lot of sense to me as I'm a disciple of Lynn Nicholson. Compression and correct use of energy directed up and out makes the upper register easily accessible. U've got Great chops too! U're singing up there baby!

And I’m not raising my eyebrows to play the High notes . It’s more that I might be running out of air, and it’s a natural result that that happens.

Energy. Nobody ever had a better upper register sound than Maynard, and he didn’t pinch his chops or arch his tongue. Compression’s great if you just want to hit the notes and don’t care about a big sound.
