In this video, please listen to Doc's singing quality as he plays. It's amazing how fluid he is and how easy he makes this sound. The notes aren't forced or "pasted." They are floated and sung. He will remain one of the greatest trumpeters of all time.
I mean to witness true greatness....to stand there live and deliver the goods like that...I'm blown away... I'd be nervous enough just thinking of playing out there alone on that stage and then to have the absoulute stones to play in the upper register like that....truly the greatest! Doc also knows he can hit those notes he's not just hoping and praying he can...he knows right where they sit....watch the close ups no squeezing no unnecessary tension etc...from low to high and back again just air flow!
I couldn’t agree more!
back in the '70's & '80's, Doc was at his peak-I got to hear him LIVE a few times-fantastic player to say the least. Unlike Maynard, Doc wasn't a "natural", he was like the rest of us "mortals" i.e., he had to work for it and develop it. He was obsessed with the Trumpet and equipment. In truth, I often only watched the Tonight Show for Doc & The band...miss those days...
I’m with you on that! I used to watch The Tonight Show only hoping to hear Doc play…
I have cassette tape of "Doc Severinsen and his Orchestra, the Best of" that is probably at least 40 years old. The first track on the 2nd side is a different arrangement of "I Can't Get Started". It starts with Doc playing the first 9 notes a cappella. I remember being mesmerized by his tone and I listened to those 9 notes over and over. What a sound!
I think I might have that recording on his Tempestuous Trumpet record. Beautiful!
Stunning.
Agreed!
Truly the greatest trumpet player of all time!
Damn right!
So great…..🧘🏽♂️
Doc really is something!
And that lower register, too. So rich.
Exactly! Beautiful playing throughout all registers…
Hi Brandon, hi Jeremy!
