A collection of my opinions.
2023: TOP FILMS OF THE YEAR
Making up for lost time, I give some mini reviews of popular movies from last year and give my Top 10. This video took a lot longer than anticipated so I closed this out by finally acknowledging I'm not going to make movie critique videos anymore. This is partly because going to see movies sucks now, but there are other influencing factors. I am grateful for everyone who's watched my content over the past 4 years. I'm going to shift my focus of this channel to bigger projects - such as the KOTOR retrospective and whatever comes next.

Please do not post spoilers in the comments! I'll have to delete your comment if you do. UPDATE 05/2024: The success of this video enabled me to enter the UA-cam partners program. However, the ~70 seconds of the Star Wars theme at 11:08 makes this 3-hour video completely ineligible for monetization. Any ad revenue goes to Disney. I did this as a passion project, so I never expected to make anyt...
HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE is a thrilling depiction of desperation and activism

New microphone had a setting I should've turned off so the audio is a little spotty in this one. I include captions for every video so this might be a good one to use it on. How to Blow Up a Pipeline provides a window into the worldview of dispossessed climate extremists and what would motivate someone who commit ecoterrorism. INFINITY POOL distinguishes Brandon Cronenberg as a uniquely visual and comedic filmmaker

Infinity Pool surprised me by being one of the funnier films I've seen in recent memory despite (probably) not being a comedy. I think this movie distinguished Brandon Cronenberg as a more visual and comedic filmmaker compared to his father. It is still a niche film but I think it has a lot of fun to offer if you're open to what it is. 00:00 - Introduction 00:24 - Background 01:55 - Premise 02:...

2022: TOP FILMS OF THE YEAR

This was a great year for movies and I have a feeling movies are back! I look forward to 2023. It was nice to have so much difficulty making my top 10 because there were SO MANY good movies. A lot of action and horror films which is kind of strange, but I welcome the change. I've chosen to hide the titles in the chapter titles. It's easy enough to skip around if you just want to see my picks. T...
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE is an instant American classic

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a very special film to me, but I took a long time to write about it because I didn't think I could do it justice. The time it took me to review it shouldn't be indicative of its quality. I loved this movie when it came out and I've continued to love it even as filmgoers have turned against it recently. It's a beautiful film and I consider it a new American c...
MEN is pretentious junk

A film I wish I forgot... Men is easily the most disappointing movie of the year. I'm a huge Alex Garland fan and it is such a shame he's wasted his time on this junk. As critical as I am of this movie, there are one or two things that are kind of ok but I think I'm far more willing to appreicate those things as a fan. For most people, this is probably one of the worst movies of the year. 2/5 S...

Didn't like this movie. Very cowardly and dumb. I wonder why this movie didn't make the far more obvious critique of elitist circles. Maybe there was a producer who's name and contact information are in the book of a known and prolific trafficker/criminal? Just guessing. 20 Years Later: SPIRITED AWAY is Studio Ghibli's Magnum Opus

This time I uploaded the right file. Spirited Away has always been a very special film for me. I wanted to write out why it remains so impactful and meaningful more than 20 years after release. This project ended up meaning a lot to me so it grew in length - both literally in runtime and how long I spent on it. This was originally planned for Spirited Away's 20-year anniversary but oh well. The Oscars and the Culture of Narcissism
Переглядів 5242 роки тому
In this video I attempt to redeploy my reading of Christopher Lasch's Culture of Narcissism into why no one cares about the Oscars anymore. I've been disappointed with the awards for more than a decade. It's not as simple as disagreeing with their picks, it's the frequency at which the awards are given to ludicrous nominees. Shout out to 2022's Oscars which did not nominate The Green Knight for...
MAD GOD is a veteran artist's magnum opus, and also a miserable film

I really cannot believe I failed to say "stop MOTION" seven separate times and missed five of them in the edit. Phil Tippett's Mad God is a technical masterpiece and maintains undeniably artistry, but actually watching the movie isn't something I'd recommend to anyone who isn't a masochist. Terrifying and incomprehensible it was one of the most disturbing movies I've seen but didn't provide any...

Top 10 Best Episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation
I'm a huge fan of the KOTOR games and recently picked up KOTOR 1 and am in the middle of playing it again. I'm glad your video showed up on my suggested list (probably because I've been youtubing videos on the game). It's kind of funny because coming towards the end of the video I realized that this project must've taken you a long time to produce: the edits, the monologue, and sure enough as soon as I thought it, I got to the part of your video where you mention this, haha. I of course liked your video very much and subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to future content on KOTOR.
If something doesn't come close to killing you it's probably not worth doing in the first place. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope to deliver more soon!
My unpopular opinion is Taris is the best part if Kotor. The planet with the most depth and most well thought out characters and storylines, I think the story was at its best when you were just some guy, not the saviour of the galaxy, just some guy skulking around trying to avoid getting captured by the guys who blew your ship up.

Yo really appreciate what you going man keep up the work
I played this game from a blockbuster when I was 8 years old for roughly 2 hours before getting confused and burnt out. Fast forward to after playing DOS and BG3 I came back to this game and realized it had similar rules (imagine that) and suddenly everything clicked and made more sense on how to play. Now I’m having a ton of fun and I wish I understood this game a kid
New players should play KOTOR on Easy difficulty level on their first play through. That allows for making big mistakes like not wearing armour on Taris, or using blasters in close combat.
As for lightsaber throwing, that actually has precedent, in the OT out of all places! In the fight of Darth Vader and Luke, Vader throws his lightsaber. But it's not a double one, so there's that.
The "most popular" female portrait you show doesn't line up with the statistic you present immediately after! :D
@@MrAbgeBrandt yeah I screwed that up lol. Congrats on being the first to notice.
@@ArthurAugustyn thanks :D I paid extra attention since the head that won the poll too is by far my favourite female head, so I was a bit surprised by the one you first noted. :D
Kudos man, I love this game and Kotor 2 to death, this was such an amazing video with a lot of interesting insight. Taris doesn't deserve even a fraction of the hate it gets, I'm really looking forward to the next vid!
I understand that kotor is built on the same bioware engine they made neverwinter nights on but there is in fact a star wars d20 system and while comparable to D&D 3rd edition the system has drastic differences. I really wish people would acknowledge this.
@@CarnivorousApe I got a lengthy combat section in the next game. What would you say are the biggest differences?
@ArthurAugustyn between the star wars and D&D systems? They both run off the d20 system so the differences are in the content. The feats you can take for instance, they didn't come up with the gearhead feat as an adaptation of any D&D feat, it's just an option in the star wars system. Similarly the power attack feats may be similar but star wars went the further direction and added the critical strike and flurry feats that don't have a similar D&D analog outside of class features. The entire stealth systems are different as well D&D relying on your actual hiding skills and star wars requiring a stealth field generator to predator camouflage yourself. The systems are similar enough that you could run a D&D sheet for a character in star wars from a backwater pre-space planet though. Similarly you could give a D&D character a Lightsaber and just use the stats from the star wars system and it would be compatible.

what an amazing video ! i always end up replaying the games every few years !!
In regards to your criticism of the undercity and saying that while quest line is out of place for Star Wars, it’s actually quite the opposite. Star Wars isn’t really traditional Science Fiction, it’s Science Fiction Fantasy, the Jedi are space wizards and the idea of the force itself is a form of magic if you really think about it. That’s something people always overlook that Star Wars as an IP isn’t really sci-fi like something like Star Trek or movies like Ex Machina are. Those are examples of IPs that are actually Sci-fi. If you delve into the lore of Star Wars beyond this game you’d see that it’s a common sentiment. The Yuuzhan Vong are referenced in this game too and cancerous speaks about it like its myth/legend and something beyond their understanding, that kinda of theme comes up pretty frequently. Same thing with terentateks, somewhat of myth until you encounter them in the game
@@brian-michaelmedina5472 this is a good distinction people often misunderstand about Star Wars, but I don’t think that saves the undercity. It’s just a little too low fantasy plague story for a planet with advanced technology like hyperspace. I appreciate the comment and sharing your thoughts!
@ fair enough point! I’m waiting on part 2 bro! You inspired me to start another run through of this classic game you definitely earned a sub 🤘🔥
Please make part 2! Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Taris is great, excellent arguments and conclusion section
making my way through your video, big fan, excited to see the next one!
I really enjoyed this analysis. I haven't played KOTOR in so many years, and it was so fun coming back to this. I didn't know Taris was hated so much, I really enjoyed it. I look forward to part 2!

Taris is good, only really tedious and frustrating if you are a literal child (me when kotor came out) or you are doing a scout level 2 run.
Taris may be bad because I played KOTOR thrice But at least that thing is better than Manaan
Fun Fact: In Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO from 2011, you discover Trask was from House Ulgo of Alderaan, one of the royal families. There's even a mission on Alderaan dedicated to the retrieval of Darth Bandon's head which is to be kept in possession of House Ulgo in Trask's memory. Writing this comment before I'm finished, but really love the video so far :)
Scantily clad lady locked in a cage? Are you Amish or something? "Oh my god, she's wearing a tank top and pants! How scandalous!? I thought this was a family friendly game and here they are showing a woman's bare shoulders! Shoulders!!!"
You think the guy in the lower cantina cheats? All of pazaak is a cheat because the player always has to go first. KOTOR 2 even has Atton make a joke about it. The only way to win is to buy all the best cards and save scum. I'm pretty sure the devs even tried to tell you that by having the guy in the upper cantina call you a cheater if save scum enough to take all his money, having the guy in the lower cantina tell you he'll always play you, and never having anyone else in the game call you on cheating when you defy all probability to win a bunch of games in a row. That's the "finer points of the game" that the guy in the lower cantina was talking about.
The point that you make that the developers should have noted that melee weapons are better than ranged hits hard. I remember when I first was playing this game when I was 10 years old and wanting to use guns. I kept dying in the underground area on Taris and quit playing it for a few years. I finally came back to it and it became one of my favorite games.
Yeah, the massive -5 penalty to AC (defense) for using a blaster against an opponent attacking you with a melee weapon is a real killer for new players who don’t understand the combat system. Only way to compensate for it is to play on Easy difficulty level, so enemies only do half damage.
I'm still making part 2. There's updates on the community tab of my profile. It's taking longer than anticipated, but it's a passion project so the only thing driving its release is because I want to do it.
Just found this yesterday and pleasantly surprised to see this update! This video inspired me to do another playthrough :)
Enjoyed the video, looking forward to the next episode.
We'll all be here waiting for it!
Excited to see it!
I started playing this for the first time a week ago at 28 years old and it’s actually been really fun! Looking forward to the next one
Are you gonna make a part 2?
yes
@ArthurAugustyn awsome. I can't wait to see it. This is one of my favorite games and I love these long documentaries. It's nice to listen to while I do life. I know the game so I can get distracted and hop back without getting lost. Thank you brother

Finally, someone who agrees about how bland the killer was. A whole lot of talking and not much else.
Major contributor to disconnecting from film analysis/reviews is how regularly everyone seems out of their minds. Totally agree, I have no idea what people saw in that movie.
Endar Spire followed by Taris might be my favourite levels in any game, let alone Star Wars. Spent so much time replaying Endar Spire hoping that the Jedi or Sith would drop a saber haha
Finally, i still kept rewind the golden day oscar award...
kotor 1 and 2 are both on IOS, including the yavin station dlc.

I joined from your kotor video! But I really enjoyed this perspective and will definitely check out your other reviews. I watched Zone of Interest based on this video. What a masterclass in tonal control! Thanks for the great work
Taris is one of the most fun parts of the game
Welcome to the long form video analysis gang ill be watching this video every 3 months until I'm dead, appreciate it😂
So much advise for a KOTOR remake that's not happening currently.
I ALWAYS do everything on Taris. Even the promise land story lol
18:42 Trask seems like a cool character, I hope we see more of him
the final fantasy 10 blitz ball game was so cool, i got to a point where i was playing that for so long i forgot what i was doing in the main story.
i wouldn't get rid of the underworld but make it better, there's just a lot of repetition. maybe add some interesting scenes or shorten it, i don't hate it like other people
Great video and a badass movie
Casually listened as I played kotor 2. I was sad to see this was as far as you've gotten. I look forward to listening to the other planets. As for taris it doesn't deserve the hate. I've never disliked it. I thought it was a slog, sure. And you've brought up great ways to fix the issues. Really hope you continue and finish the Gane as a whole.
Still working on it. I got updates on my community page. Current situation (09/2024) is I have ~3 hours of content but I'm holding off on releasing the next full episode until it covers everything I wanted it to cover. That said, I am releasing an unlisted video of what I have so far ideally by the end of the month. The editing is taking a long time because I need to grab footage from other games which caused a big delay. Thanks for watching and your interest in the future videos!
