I read the book after seeing the movie twice and I feel like the Wachowskis did a fantastic job adapting the book while also making it their own. The passion put into this project makes it so engrossing for me and it's probably my favorite Tom Hanks performance.
Definitely! People don't appreciate that style of editing because it becomes invisible to you if it's done right. The fact Cloud Atlas is so coherent despite having a ton of stuff going on is a testament to its success in that field. Luckily the oscars paid their own price and no one really cares what they think anymore. Thanks for commenting!
@@ArthurAugustyn Yeah, honestly I went to the theater as a goof - thinking it would be as horrible as their last few movies & I’d just make fun of it...but I was fully engaged and felt really touched and it emotionally resonated with me. Each time I rewatch it I’m rewarded with noticing more brilliant technical & story aspects. It’s amazing how each story has a specific tone & style, yet the overall piece remains consistent. There will even be a piece of dialog in one story that then cuts to a relevant visual in another....truly amazing.
This is the best review I've seen so far on UA-cam, every other review is like "cloud atlas is epic, it's ambitious, it's bold" and no one talks about actually why this is such a great example of cinema well done
Thank you so much! I am glad you feel I did the movie justice - as someone who likes it just as much as I do. It's definitely worth more than a platitude and a very special film. Happy you enjoyed the video and have chosen to subscribe.
I was blown away the first time I watched this. I was amazed and delighted such an imaginative, unconventional was actually made. No cookie cutter film this.
I will admit that when I first saw this movie, I wasn't feeling it. I was lost and confused and my mind practically gave up less than halfway through. I will say now, without ANY hesitation, this is hands down, without a doubt, one of the best movies of all time. Definitely in my top 5. It took me more than one viewing but the more I watched it, the more it opened my mind and amazed me. Today I could not put a number on how many times I've rewatched this film and I've also read the book multiple times. We NEED more movies like this. We NEED more movies that make people think and don't just shove action and CGI down our throats. Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with movies like that from time to time but we need more inspirational and thought-provoking art.
Great analysis, well thought out. When I first saw this film, I was so engrossed, I didn’t want to blink. Although it has been overlooked by The Academy, I really feel that it will be regarded as the Citizen Kane of the 21st century. One theme that struck me strongly was made clear in a character’s assertion that “the meek are meat; the rest do eat”. The film shows how evil stems from those to regard people as expendable tokens, a means to an end, and feel that their suffering is irrelevant.
Yeah I saw that a lot in line with the imprisonment theme. There is a dynamic of the rulers and the ruled that affects the psyche of both. Quite literally in the cannibalism story.
One of these days I'm going to make the case that you're missing it on Jupiter Ascending. I know I'm way, way in the minority here, but the only reason I put it below Cloud Atlas is that the latter is so next level that I still get overwhelmed by it. I'm not ready to make it right now, but if you're willing to listen, I'm going to be making my case for it maybe not too long from now. "But I think that most of the problem is that people are kinda dumb." OMG, thank you for saying this, and I never thought I would agree with that. But that's really what this is. This movie was literally life transformative for me, in that watching it set off a chain of events for me that saw my whole family literally moving half way across the nation a year later and going on this type of vision quest, or maybe hero's journey. It's so brilliant on so many levels that no matter how many times I watch it, the next time I get tidal waves of new meaning. People just mostly right now aren't interested in decoding a movie this densely packed with meaning. It drives me crazy, because there's so many incredible movies out there that no one is seeing. Gabriel. Blueberry (or "Renegade" in the US). You want tonal consistency? Watch The Salton Sea. It goes all over the place but then you realize that that was the whole point. I love films where you can sense that every frame you're watching was included in there for a reason. It's what I love about The Matrix, and I can think of so many films that fit this description. It's such a tragedy that people don't realize what they're missing, and I hope it doesn't mean the death of such films, because we need them now more than ever. Last item: check out the video essay about this film on the channel "Like Stories of Old". I'll just link it here: ua-cam.com/video/LwLP62fL83k/v-deo.html . They have a phenomenal thesis about this film. That really is a channel that anyone interested in movie analysis should subscribe to. Their videos are as beautiful as the movies they talk about. Excellent work, will definitely see what else you have to say. I'll get back to you on Jupiter.
Just watched Cloud Atlas last night! Been thinking about it all morning, so I hopped on UA-cam for some analysis. Happy I hopped on your channel.. great job!
I think I have seen this movie 6 times.... 1st time in the cinema. There is so many stories in the stories..... I don't think I found anything new in my last watch, but in the first 5 I found some new details. Another thing about this movie, is, the 6 time linies are made in 6 different genres as I see it. The major reason why alot of people don't like it, is the fact, you need to be focused when you watch it... If you miss parts of the movie you miss some of the understanding... It is a movie where you can't talk to your friends when you watch it... it is a very concentrated way of watching a movie.... I have heard several people say "I didn't noticed they meet again and again in the different time lines..." ... and I go WTF they even hint it in words in the movie... and what part of "Everything is connected" don't people understand? It is one of my favorit movies for sure.
People who don't have the attention to span to comprehend it's courage and interconnection won't like it. The way the movie was inspired itself shows how everything is interconnected.
Love the movie and I think this is one of the rare cases where the film is actually superior to the book because without the visual assistance the book has a harder time illustrating it’s themes, although it’s still very good.
Sometimes it feels as though the concepts are part of a larger body of work. Abstract notions from future generations, and we can’t exactly make sense of them yet. Not enough people have written on it, acknowledged it.
The first time I saw this movie I knew it was a masterpiece and one of those movies I wouldn't shut up about when asking my friends if they'd seen it yet.
Agree with you completely, people are so used to movies spoon feeding them everything, nothing can be implied because they won’t get it and they come across as stupid. Are they stupid though or just mentally lazy?
Wow! Thank you 😊 whenever I try to show my family and friends this movie, they get bored....I’ve watched this movie alone so many times and I’m still learning, thank you for breaking down this movie....too bad my friends and family are missing out because they have a short attention span 😂
It's definitely the sort of film you either love or hate. I absolutely love it for the nuances and themes running through it, but the rest of my family don't understand the appeal it has for me.
I wouldn't be too hard on Tom Hanks' character in the post-apocolyptic storyline, (Zachary). He might seem cowardly, at first, but what you have to remember is that, in the book, Zachary was only 13 years old.
Hi, Thank you for this review. I agree with everything you said. Cloud Atlas is a master piece of science fiction. Truly one of the greatest movies experiences I have ever had. I left the theatre knowing I just watched my favorite film of all time. Each segment, and there are six, could have been a seperate film. Many times I didn't know which actor was portraying which part because the acting and makeup is that good. Thanks
Glad this film getting some love here. It’s easily my favorite film since it came out and is actually better than the book but only because the visual and auditory medium confers advantages for showing even more interweaving than can the written word alone. And the book is beautifully written. So… between this commentary and one other by Like Stories of Old there’s a lot to say about why this work was so satisfying.
