My only problem with this movie is that it simply isn't long enough. Cronenberg has created a fascinating world here but even after repeated viewings it feels like we have only skimmed the surface of a bigger story. I'd bite my tongue before suggesting it should be a TV series (unless it was on a channel like Shudder where there seems to be more creative freedom) but if he were to create a second story - not necessarily a sequel - in the same world then I'd definitely buy a ticket. I could have done without the subplot involving the new-vice department if it gave us more in depth material with the people and motivations behind the central premise but it's a minor quibble. On a meta level I did wonder, on my first viewing, if this was meant to comment on the current state of the film industry with DC as Saul, creating new material only for it to be registered, judges and possibly hidden away at the whim of people who have no business doing so. I'm sure there is more than just a standard narrative going on here but I'm happy to wait for DC to proclaim whether there is or is not another agenda. Thanks for the review, enjoy hearing what others think of movies like this because very few people in my social circle have even heard of it. Cheers!!
Yeah, the world building was definitely a strong element of this film. It's so rich with content I would be fascinated to see what else is possible in this world. I think Cronenberg wrote this back in the early 2000s, so probably not a lot of modern allegories. Like I say in the review, I appreciated how it didn't try too hard to make a central "point." It's the best kind of art, one where its story can be applied to multiple interpretations. It feels just as relevant today. I really appreciate the thoughtful comment! Glad you liked the film.
Watched the movie for Viggo and Kristen but I have to say I was a little disappointed, I didn’t understand much of the movie so thank you for explaining
I'd say it was more unnerving than gruesome. There was never a moment where I didn't see the gross thing coming, so there's no shock value to it. The grossest scene in my mind was a scene that I can only describe as a woman giving a man's lower intestines a blowjob. The visuals weren't too bad, but the context of what was going on was just really gross. And for what it's worth, this movie is so ~ideas~ heavy, that if you were to cover your eyes for a lot of it I think you'd still really like it.
Criminally underrated channel. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!
I def reccomend rewatching Possessor. It took me 2 watches to appreciate it, but i do now! Good movie
Great review!

How gruesome was this? Wanted to see it but didn't because I get queasy at the sight of open wounds and blood. Great review
