The first half an hour was absolute gold exactly how i dreamed it would be and up to then i loved it, then the second half just went no where, it made no sense and just went from a an interesting story to random ideas and abstracts.
Not every film needs a narrative that makes sense. Sometimes a film is just pure art at 24fps... a dream made manifest. This is one of those times. It may not be for everyone, but its exactly what it needs to be. I for one am glad someone made a stop motion film that doesnt shoehorn songs into it every 5 minutes.
The guy should just stick to working on other people's movies. He is not good at making a movie but is good at making stop motion and creatures for others.
It’s unique and has its immersive moments but the live action and poorly done green screens completely took me out of it. Add the fact that the story is non existent makes it mediocre at best. This whole “it took 30 years” is NEVER a good sign.
i thought it was amazing. i heard there is going to be a sequel to it called "Pequin’s Pendequin" that's going to be more lighter and have a traditional Narrative. Phil also said " It’s more the tone of a 1940s Warner Brothers cartoon, but it also has a dark side - but it’s more it’s more uplifting" Phil sculpted the maquettes, drew out 800 storyboards and the script.
Yeah, I've seen the promotional materials refer to Mad God as the first in a series of planned films. I hope that comes together. There's certainly undeniable talent and ability on display here, it just didn't land with me personally. More films might also make the point/narrative of them all more obvious for dumbies like me. Thanks for commenting!
@@ArthurAugustyn well Mad God did start out as short films but after Phil had a mental breakdown while making it, he decided to finish what was left and edit it into one feature.
I think that it illustrates what the universe is like if all possibilities exist but also coincide and also string together no matter how random. So imagine a multiverse where any possibility exists. In this view, that movie is real, and all the things that happen are part of infinity, so somewhere that exact scenario exists. And as grotesque as it is, it's part of duality, the negative to the positive, the chaos within the order, the bizarre is perhaps only bizarre when experienced from a fixed point rather than seeing the big picture outside of the insanity perspective. There is a thought that everything in duality like hot and cold are the same thing differences being only the degree. Meaning there is heat and absence of heat. Light and absence of light. Sanity and absence of sanity. So, on that spectrum of "the same thing" this is just a low vibrational scenario of the infinitely causal loop. There is god, then there is the mad god. Both the same thing difference is by degrees? You, me, someone else, difference by degrees? You, god, difference by degrees? Everything, nothing, difference by degrees? It suggests that absolutely everything is happening so that everything vibrationally low and high can be understood by everything when taken as a whole. This movie is one perspective in that theory

It's a great movie, if challenging to watch. I'm not sure what it all means .. but it's a very different beast from most films. It pushes the boundaries of what a movie can be.
the part the doctor ripped out his organs and eventually treasure was trippy but i felt it was a metaphor for organs being worth money IRL he didn’t see them as organs but as treasurer at least that’s what i got from it i actually really enjoyed this movie but was feeling disturbed the whole next day but i really liked the film lol
Yeah I can get behind that kind of lower-level metaphor. It seems more appropriate to the work. I also share your experience of kinda of enjoying how disturbing it was. It's definitely a unique accomplishment! Thanks for commenting.
@@ArthurAugustyn no problem! watched it again with my sister this weekend and i noticed a lot of crazy stuff! the creator Phil said the lowest level people are called “shit people” and they do meaningless tasks. i can see a lot of parallels to our world in that movie! such a dope experience of a movie!
Spot on review. I have huge respect for Phil's skill and technically the film is brilliant but I've no interest in watching the excrement that results from his anxiety and depression. If it is indeed a critique of our society, it offers nothing except crushing hopelessness, brutality and ugliness. We have an epidemic of depression and self-harm; is it any wonder?
Absolutely. Good to find someone else with similar thoughts. I don't mean to detract from the accomplishment of his artistry but the resulting product really not something I want to spend more time with. Thanks for commenting!
The puppet animation was amazing visual delight. The AMOUNT OF TIME TAKEN TO MAKE IT SHOWS. Doing it FRAME BY FRAME.... The story about war . Nazi and 1940.s war equipment was RUBBISH. Put me off 💩
Clearly you aren’t an animator. This wasn’t meant to be a story, it was the creator doing whatever came to mind because he had the talent and the want to do it. It’s not about story, it’s not about cohesion, it’s about art.
I feel like people who are confident in their relationship with art wouldn't feel the need to invalidate other people's viewing experience/relationship.
@@ArthurAugustyn I can only speak for myself as a mediocre animator. The random shit I’d make was similar. No arching plot, just a bunch of weird shit with weird names.

Being an animator doesn't make you any more proficient than a software engineer knows what makes a good user experience. You don't always know until a user/viewer makes their opinions known. It may be technically/artistically sound, but marketed as movie it's pretty damn dull and pointless. 30 years making a movie I judge it by movie standards, not artistic standards(and movies usually contain some sort of story, otherwise it is a long meandering video with no purpose.). Hiding behind artistry when people criticize is no different from those who produce abstract 'art' that consists of simple geometric shapes or colors, it's an insult to everyone's intelligence.

look up Tippets other work "mutant Land" it's a short animated film. Looks like it could be a trailer for a post-apocalyptic RPG.
