Watched the film today. I totally agree with you; I only really disliked were the forced action-sequences, mainly the Neo Vs. Smith in the middle of the film. But I guess that's just part of Lana having to do these. And yeah, the Smith actor can't keep up with Hugo Weaving which made it feel awkward. The rest I loved; knew I could not trust these negative reviews. Love the Wachowskis.
Awesome! Yeah I've learned critical reception of Wachowskis is often unreliable. They are absolutely unique filmmakers and it doesn't always jive with the general public's response - or even critics response. Glad you liked it and I appreciate the comment.
Nice analysis. I really liked the movie for its meta aspects. I understand the action was stronger in earlier installments but the action was always my least favorite aspect of the franchise. I might be more interested in a novelization that could expand on the heady stuff. I was disappointed to read lackluster performance at the box office will likely kill chances of a continuing story, even though I can see that internal meta analysis might have run its course. Something I don't think you touched on, perhaps because of spoilers, I appreciated the bit of revision to "the one" aspect of the original story. My main complaint was just the exclusion of Hugo Weaving as he had a very distinctive delivery who's absence made the "...just like old times" moment of Resurrections, feel empty.
Yeah I generally try to avoid spoilers and in reviews I try not to get to analytical but stick to saying what I liked/didn't like so people can decide if they want to invest their time. If I did a retrospective on the series I could talk more about that stuff. I agree the Smith character felt very empty without Weaving. It feels like it was written for him but handed off to another actor, which is strange because I think they knew Weaving wasn't available for a while? Honestly, imaging Weaving in a douchey San Francisco tech bro outfit giving Neo shit sounds incredible. I wish they made that come together. But I don't think the box office will matter much. Remember - in the United States at least - the movie streamed on HBO Max during a huge COVID spike. I imagine that's where most people watched it (that's where I watched it). I feel pretty certain they wouldn't reboot the franchise to give it one shot and nothing after that. There's gotta be at least attempt #2. If you're big into the cerebral stuff I'd definitely recommend Animatrix if you haven't seen it already. It's got some great ideas in short vignettes. Thanks for commenting!
@@ArthurAugustyn I hope for and look forward to you doing a retrospective then. Yeah I'll give Animatrix another look. I think I was a bit oversaturated by Matrix hype at the time but recently, I've actually been very interested in audio books that deal with reality bending concepts so this Matrix sequel caught my interest at the right time, (also watched on HBOMax rather than the theater 😬).
The intent of making movies & games is more meta these days. You see, what's the point about getting enthralled in a fictional world and story? It's about unplugging people from all of this technology which is quickly eroding society. So if they intentionally or unintentionally make it crappy then maybe more people will be inclined to get out and take a hike.
I was disappointed with the movie, but your analysis actually makes sense and more fun to watch, I like the idea how the movie mocks at sequels, franchises and Hollywood producers but it was a bit boring, if it was more funny and had better action scenes, it would have done good at the box office I’m not much fan of the Spider-Man no way home (dr strange-professor Xavier surprise, and Star Wars sequels) because it pulls a nostalgia trick I don’t like it as much, but matrix pulls off a mockery of these tricks and its actually quite brilliantly done I like your positive view of this film, I was originally not planning to watch this considering the negative buzz but I’m glad I watched this video and you changed my mind😅😅
Thanks! Yeah, I generally agree that the fundamentals of Resurrections are lacking. The action isn't great, it doesn't land its narrative beats, and the humor misses a lot. But it was going for something super ambitious and it did accomplish that one thing which is novel and why I liked it so much. Like I said, kind of a "one and done" but still has value. Thanks for commenting! Hope you'll stick around for other videos.
IMO, a good example of a big "F U game" was Fallout 76. I just knew Todd Howard was ticked off at Zenimax during this time, so I think Todd was deadset on putting the least amount of effort into '76'. If you know anything about numerology and how 76 relates to West Virginia and the Mothman prophecies, then it will make more sense to you but I doubt you have any idea wtf I'm talking about right now. I actually messaged a friend back on Facebook during 2015 and I was talking about Fallout and that amicable number, '76'.
idk kinda feminist kinda woke...I liked the trilogy but not this new garbage, the part where they made fun of the original dialogue was so cringe to me! when they said bla bla bla to Morpheus's dialogue and just skipped to saying "choice matters take red or blue" wtf man, the whole point in the old one was to explore with philosophy about how the matrix is a prison for your mind and Neo's enlightenment story, it was very much anti-system and spiritual not about trans identity lol
I didn't read the "blah blah blah" as making fun of the original dialogue. I thought it was making fun of remakes' rehashing dialogue to connect with people's nostalgia. Like when a Spider-Man movie talks about great power and great responsibility, it's like "yeah I understood that reference!" It's trite and boring. I thought this movie was purposefully saying no one is fooled by that cheap nostalgia trick and that's exactly what Resurrections would've been if it didn't take the approach it did. I can understand not liking it though. I appreciate the comment!
animatrix was dope yeah
