I appreciate that M. Night went back to basics with his filmmaking, aside from shooting this on film with 90’s era cameras, he stuck to story and less on a gimmick. The best part of Knock at the Cabin were the actors, they kept me invested from start to finish.
Yeah that was absolutely my takeaway as well. It felt like a good throwback to what I liked about Shyamalan. A compelling story with good performances. I hope he builds from this. Thanks for commenting!
Unbreakable was a reveal and so was signs. Lady in the water was fantasy not a thriller. What are his gimmicks? The reason he does good at the box office is because since the visit he has operated with low or mid budgets
Good review. I remember in the early to mid 2000's when Shyamalan really was like the new Hitchcock - before the crash and burn. 😂 I think one of his biggest faults is that he gets ahead of himself, leaping into the making of films without adequate forethought. He churned out Glass so quick after Split blew up you just know that story was probably barely a 2nd draft. At this point he seems to have pulled himself out of the gutter of making completely indefensible garbage and into making just middle of the road stuff. Still, I guess he's earned his place in the annals of film. Unbreakable and Signs, despite having flaws, I actually think are kind of masterpieces. Like, we can't pretend we didn't all collectively go "Oh, shit!" when the alien walked across the screen Bigfoot style. 😆 But the emotions hit really hard too, so I think he can write, at least sometimes. The Visit was also a pleasant surprise to me. I actually wouldn't mind seeing Knock at the Cabin, although I might wanna read the book first.
Yeah, even in his bad movies he's got one or two moments that really work. Your depiction of him rising out of total garbage to now "middle of the road stuff" is pretty funny and accurate. It's like he recreated himself over his career and now he might finally make a good movie again, lol.

The reason this is closer to beliefs is because the book was. This isn't an m night idea, it's a Paul Tremblay one
A magazine said that he was another Steven Spielberg. So blame the media

The book does the same thing. The book just ends. And m night has many films without twists. Big difference between reveals and twists
well since the man has made only 2 good movies in 20 years those being unbreakable and signs then the streak of shit has continued
