    Hi, just curious, why do you usr a flyrod instead of a spinning rod? Do the kings bite the fly or is it flossing like for sockeye? Thanks

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures 4 дні тому

      A little of both actually. Because sockeye are running now I like to give myself a chance at getting a hook up. The kings will go after beads, lures, spin n glos and other types of gear. Flipping for sockeye and catching a king is my method because of the increased action and I entirely prefer fighting a fish on a fly rod.

    Aren't those weighted flies?

    • @alaskasmallcraftadventures
      @alaskasmallcraftadventures 6 днів тому

      They are... Don't use weight below your hook tip or you'll end up paying for it but these wet flies are legal in these parts. I wouldn't say they're the best though. I have the most luck using #4 octopus J hooks w/ bead or yarn. They get a better drift and don't stick the bottom as often.

    • @Steve-rr3gc
      @Steve-rr3gc 5 днів тому

      I contacted fish and game before I tied those to make sure they were legal. We use them for steelhead in Erie, Pa Also guys in Washington use them a lot for coho, especially the “jigs”. The flow of the kenai is a lot faster than the Kasilof ??? Also correct my memory, the bottom isn’t as muddy , more rock/stone?

      I took them out and tried a few yesterday at a new spot on the lower kasilof. I’m finding that the jig head style wants dig into the river bottom and grasses. I was catching a lot of weeds and muck and it was difficult to keep the hook clean compared to a regular octopus style j hook. I’ll continue to try them at different locations and see what kind of results I get! Thanks again!

    • @Steve-rr3gc
      @Steve-rr3gc 9 днів тому

      thanks for trying them. Maybe the 1/16 is too heavy for that current. I have smaller ones I’ll tie. Thanks for the info. I know the guys in Washington who were using the 1/16 jig heads were jigging the hard-but that was for coho-which is too early for you at the moment.

      My first job ever was working for one of the now shuttered canneries. We would drive down the beach and bring ice to the set net sites. Each day those beach sites would catch a tote full of 40+ pound kings salmon. The fish ran out before the regulations changed to protect the natural stock and here we are today all angling for a hatchery fish to put on the table.

      Watch the weather forecasts and make sure there’s plenty of fuel available for long trips out in the Gulf of Alaska. Keep in mind that you are a guest out on the ocean and give it the utmost respect. It sounds extreme but the ocean is unforgiving and offers little room for error. The currents are really strong and the water is always frigid cold, even on a warm day. The adventure makes it worth it though and the fishing is unforgettable! 🐟

    I have zero problem with people doing this, but I will say: they DEFINITELY will eat a fly. I have watched them swim out of their lane and eat my fly numerous times. None of the other pacific salmon eat in freshwater, either, and that includes winter steelhead, yet we all get them to eat a fly or lure, or bait. I've never flossed for sockeyes or any other fish, but if I only had a week in Alaska, and wanted to take home some bright sockeyes to eat, I'd certainly consider it; it's still more sporting that a giant net

      This video was filmed in the 3rd week of July 2022. In the summertime, I film my content and then release it right after so you can assume that the premier dates for my videos are very close to the recording date. The sockeye runs here in Soldotna are at record numbers still.
