- Big Tractor Launch Offshore Deep Sea Alaska Fishing for Halibut from Deep Creek in Ocean is presented by Ryan Hall and Vinny Kruzick w/ @alaskasmallcraftadventures This episode is the first trip out saltwater fishing of 2023 in Deep Creek, Alaska. We catch fish from the bottom of the Cook Inlet including Halibut and Cod. We use a truly unique method of accessing the ocean via a big tractor! They shove your boat in the ocean directly from the beach and put you right on the fish! Its pretty awesome and if you're interested in learning how we fish here in Alaska then watch this episode! We have been counting down the days since we booked in January. Taking two grandkids (16&18) for their second trip as they got hooked on sockeyes in 2019. We are staying at gwins lodge from 7/11 and leaving 7/20. Plan to do a lot of side trips to soldotna and maybe have a chance to meet up. Planning that hot spot at college hole or moose meadows for starters. I liked the left side rotary spot too from your videos.
Good to see a video! Just got in Seward the 30th and will summer there. Yes...winter was long and it sucked. Not sure spring is here yet either!

Definitely do! Deep Creek and Anchor Point Tractor launches both put you right on the spot. If you're in for more of a challenge try launching yourself off of Whiskey Gulch right in between. I remember the days sitting on the slope dreaming of being out on the water!
@Alaska Small Craft Adventures great to know! How many ft is that boat? We have a 16ft we're gna use, didn't know you don't have to go far! But we're also from barrow where you only launch this way so we'll check it out!
This boat is an 18 footer. We use 14-16 footers too. I’ve even been out there catching nice halibut in a 12ft inflatable. Just have to watch the weather and tide timing. A mile or two offshore is all you really need for a consistent bite!
RYAN, love your videos from the perspective of us 'diy'ers' but I never thought I would see the day. Your boat is identical to mine. 1990 Sea Runner with a 1996 yamaha 50 (Kenai legal). Bought it summer of 2022. I guess we missed you last year. I launched off Ninilchik in August. Keep the videos coming.

Absolutely.. these cod here are excellent. The smaller ones tend to have fewer worms which helps the squeamish!

I just looked it led yesterday to see if you had any new videos. You helped my brothers and I out a lot last summer with our first trip to Alaska from southwest Pennsylvania. Will be back this July for another week. Hope your new baby is doing great

It sure is! I love that it pretty much puts you right on the fish. Coming out of the homer harbor adds 25 minutes each way which isn’t too bad but can really add up with choppy water. Plus, there’s always a good chance for some real excitement if the surf picks up before you get back on the trailer!

My personal best Halibut was a 75 pounder out of Seward. That bastard took me 45 minutes to reel in. The boat Captain had to blast the fish in the head with a .44 Magnum before bringing it into the boat. I was splattered with blood, but it was loads of fun!
Oh yea! Stops em right away with a blast like that. Nice size fighter though on a rod and reel!
Awesome to see the videos back now that the season is back in action! Our boat motor seized late last fall and is getting a brand new 383 Stroker installed by Boat Works of Alaska… we will have it back and be hitting the salt next weekend! Heading for Resurrection Bay for the first trip.

Oh man brand new power will be awesome! Of course breaking down and seizing up had to be catastrophic though 😳 Resurrection Bay should be filling up with sockeye and some silvers out there too. Let me know how it goes, good luck!
@@alaskasmallcraftadventures Luckily it wasn’t while underway. They think the raw water intake (through the exhaust manifolds) was leaking, which got into the cylinders. So, I was probably burning salt water for a while and didn’t realize it. Between that motor, a new steering cable to be installed, and outdrive seals being replaced, it cost just over $27,000! I guess piece of mind with a brand new motor will be nice, but damn! That’s like a new car.

I’ll cross my fingers for ya that the wind stays down and you get some smooth sailing while you’re here 🤞and some nice fish too of course!🎣🐟

We are coming for my friends, sons senior trip June 9. Stay in Moose Pass, snag in Seward, get up to Bench or Johnson in a float plane (if the snow is gone) and hopefully catch some greyling. Then fish the Russian tributary opening morning. Thoughts on that plan?
I think you have a jam packed adventure ahead of you! Goin to be exhausted that’s for sure but will definitely be worth experiencing all of those things. Timing the Russian River opener for fish can be difficult. Usually the confluence sanctuary area is closed and the main Kenai river part has fewer fish making it more difficult to catch a limit. I’ll be hiking up towards the falls where you can see if any fish are in yet. Seward should be a solid harvest for you guys though.

Thanks man! Yea the winter has really stuck around, only had one day hit 70 degrees so far. It’s been mostly in the 50s. The flora is about a month behind, it looks like rain when the wind is not blowing. Kinda strange weather, almost feels like fall more than Summer so far. Who cares if the fishing is good though right?!! The halibut fishing has started out awesome and we are looking for a king salmon this morning! Safe travels and as always thanks for tuning in!

Bringing rain gear and layering up is essential. Also sunscreen. The suns not always out but is intense when it is. I’m a fan of Mykels smoked ribeye, Louis crab & shrimp melt dipped in clam chowder and Acupulco’s chicken chipotle… to name a few😀 I just had a few sushi rolls from “a taste of Japan” and was impressed as well.

Would suggest some life jackets guys. Cook inlet tide rip is unforgiving. Also that Anchor pull system hoop is what almost sank my boat years ago, the tide was ripping hard when I went to pull anchor. The tide rip pushed the bouy up to the hull of my boat and I couldn't get away from it. I steered hard right and tried to pull anchor and the bouy went under my boat and the rope wrapped around my lower untis and it spun my boat around and my stern was now facing the ripping tide. I had to immediately grab a knife and cut my anchor rope to keep from being pulled under. Get the pull system that looks like a black tube with the bolt in it that grabs onto the rope going through it. Just want to pass on some safety so you don't have it happen to you. I hope you have a marine radio on board also. You can drift close to shore in shallow water and catch halibut on a salmon rod also. I used to catch nice halibut trolling for kings in 35 feet of water. Be SAFE guys 👍
Great tips from experience! You are absolutely right about respecting those tidal currents out here. It wouldn't take much to lose your boat or worse. Were always trying to get off the water just as fast as we get on it! Sitting on anchor during peak tide rip is never fun with that much pressure on the anchor line but is sometimes necessary depending on the day's circumstances. We try to make it a practice to watch that anchor line and get moved off the spot before the water rips. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips, having that knife handy and being aware of your surroundings. Your story gives me chills because I know what you're saying!
I first used one of these 'little black tubbie things'. did not like it at all. went with the ring after experiencing 'voluntary loss of anchor' syndrome. lol

Right on! September silver fishing is great! There's usually a Kenai River Silver derby in there somewhere too if you're in town for it. I used to guide but it kills my positive attitude! lol. Guiding is challenging and a hustle that I leave up to the pros. Most of the guides around here aren't even from here and come here to work. Im more into the fun and play side of things. With that being said though, hit me up on the channel when you're in town and lets show off your fish!

Curious to know, what is the significance of keeping the halibut white side up in the cooler? Hadn’t thought of that or heard it before
So it’s thought to help the appearance of the finished fillet. With the brown side down any pooled blood would disappear with the dark background. Whereas with the white down the blood would give the fillet a pink hue. Kinda splitting hairs here, but why not go for the gold?!!!
Hey Ryan we are heading up June 30th thru July 7th. When do you start to fishing the Kenai? Is there any website I can see a fish count or something to check on the run. All your video's show a better run later in July, I'm afraid I booked too early.

Here is the link for the fish counts. Historically the peak run is late July however there should be plenty of opportunity for you to fill up some coolers! Just put the time in and you should be successful. And stay positive, it’s just fishing after all! Russian river opens in two weeks and all of those fish travel through the Kenai river to get there and then the Kasilof and Kenai runs will follow.

Yea, finally back on the water! This is actually Vinny's boat, Maybe he wants to rent it out!? Ill have to ask him what he thinks but I bet he'll be using it if the water looks good! I think there's a couple of boat rental places here on the peninsula but I've never used one. Id imagine the boats get booked out pretty quick though.

If you and Vinny want to take the boat out, we’ll pay for gas, bait, food, launch, and whatever else. Then when you come to Texas in the wintertime, I’ll reciprocate on SkunkedAgain boats!
I live up in FBX and want to get a river capable boat but also one that can do stuff like this. I've been looking at ones like the sea ark predator. Any clue if that would be ok? Not looking to go out and be stupid and deep sea fish. Just semi protected areas in the ocean.
Oh nice, yea I like the idea of being able to run up a river but also go out on the inlet in the same boat. Things I like to look for in an inlet worthy boat would be a high bow and a V shaped bottom. A bayrunner is a good example. The inlet has a fast tide and gets choppy quick. Keeping your bow up and above the swell will make you the most comfortable.

It’s about $80 to launch and get picked up.
Little bit of useless nautical information. it "Anchor's Aweigh" In the days of Sailing fleets when the ships would haul in the anchor they would call Anchor's aweigh meaning the ship was baring the weight of the anchor. and that they the helms man would know that they had full control to navigate the ship. there you go!
Whoa! I’ve never heard that! So, first off I never imagined it spelled that way… and your explanation makes sense. Anchors aweigh meaning that the anchor is stowed on the boat… not being thrown overboard like I’ve always thought (anchors away)!! Thanks for that, I like it!
@@alaskasmallcraftadventures of the six years I spent in the navy, that is one of many fun facts that I left with... but honestly I think either use of the saying would be accurate. I enjoyed your video all the same though. I have been getting my gear together to do a bit of shore fishing along ninilchik down to anchor point.
