That might be a good idea, even if i'm as a kinda northern European of course almost naturally not a fan of Jordan Peterson(well he works still better in Europe than Ben Shapiro i guess, but he really just sounds like our more intellectual populists with a touch of weirdness and something that seems despite his Canadian heritage so very US-American).

@@trulsrohk1 That's what drove me so insane during Covid. Lockdowns and masks clearly didn't do anything to stop the virus, but what it did do is destroy people's mental health and livelihoods of businesses, and we're still feeling ripple effects in the economy, certain niche products are just indefinitely out of stock. But everyone was like, "We need to DO SOMETHING!" and that mentality is what made it so bad. We had the data that masks, especially cloth masks do nothing, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out. And then the same with lockdowns, but places kept them in place despite they didn't work. That was a textbook "pseudo moralistic stance" taken by Blue states to show that "we're not like those EVIL Republicans!" And the same stances are taken constantly by climate change activists. Their solutions will not do anything to actually affect anything except making you pay more in taxes and driving costs up. Which is pretty funny under Joe Biden is exactly what's happening, except also nothing is being done toward Climate Change either.

I just find it extremely unfair that this girl is asking Dr Peterson how to solve all the world's problems and turns it into a criticism if she doesn't get the answer she wants. He's only a psychologist trying to help people improve themselves, but she somehow thinks he must have all the answers to every problem on Earth. It was a ridiculous question meant only to point out that he's not a God, and then she criticizes him for it. It's absurd!

Peterson DOES want to be seen as someone who shows people "the path". He regularly tells people what they're doing wrong without giving actionable advice as to what they should do. I used to really like listening to Peterson (and still do on a much smaller number of topics.) But, this is a guy who regularly injects himself, and his opinions, into areas of discourse where he has literally NO expertise at all.

@@sizzlechestmcmurphy4365 i strongly disagree. i've read his books and i can't think of a single point where he injects himself as a leader of some path. what i do get from the books though is strong suggestions to think for myself, treat myself better (like i was a loved one i was taking care of) and compare myself to me in the past rather than someone else in the present. Whenever i hear arguments that jbp thinks so highly of himself i find it very confusing, as its quite close to the opposite of what he says alot of the time. I went to one of his book tours as well, and for the most part he just talked about his book and the psychology in which he is an expert. At any point where i've seen him talk about topics in which is not an expert he admits that, it's often the interviewer or host of a show who asks him a question unrelated to the topics he himself brings up.

question: "what advice do you have for people other than benign comments like clean your room?"
answer: its not benign to clean your room. you need your life in order, in a general sense, so that you can trust that your perspective is likely least skewed by such things as laziness, anger, jealousy, etc. so before you try to go out and make political decisions that have implications not only on you but those around you too, make sure you have the mentality of a hard worker, and that you can take and uphold responsibility, both of which you first learn when you first decide as a child to clean,or not clean, your room.
if he were to answer her question plainly and give another piece of advice, he would be accepting that cleaning your room is a pointless rule of life. the reason he spoke as he did and answered in such a manner as he did is because he believes this rule to be important enough to keep as one of twelve in his book. so he had every right to show his displeasure with the audience members opinion of his advice.

People who are fixed on "solving" things that they have no control over instead of their own personal circumstances and the things they should do as an individual are merely using that as an excuse and distraction to escape their personal responsibilities. What's easier? Going around and yelling at _other people_ about your activism and calling them nasty names, or reflecting on your own failings and inadequacies and striving to make changes in your own life? Dr. Peterson talks in great detail about this concept in his books. If these people would actually read his books instead of just clinging onto off context slander from Twitter and the media, they'd already have answers to their own questions.

But if everyone thinks the same way you do and tries to hold everyone else responsible, then no one will hold themselves responsible, and nothing will get done. You must take responsibility for yourself before you can even *begin* to hold others responsible. As Jesus put it, "Get the log out of your own eye before fishing the mote out of someone else's."

Rescue your father from the belly of the wale. (to speak in JBP terms) I think you can learn a lot from the conversations Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan have together. Episode 877 is the first one. ua-cam.com/video/xQwHQaaucsE/v-deo.html this could help :)

In regards to the girl... (Welcome to the burden of manhood) Just do it, just talk to her as if you actually want to get to know her. No motives no hopes no nothing. (like you would with that girl you don't have feelings for)..
You are not actually building up the courage to talk to a girl, you are making the hurdle to talk to her bigger and bigger. You are hyping yourself to the point it will not happen and its like swallowing a lead balloon. Remember she shits to and it stinks ;)
Start with saying Hi, ... would you like to go for a walk tomorrow (specify the date and time DO NOT LET THAT ONE LINGER BE SPECIFIC)
And if she says No, be courteous, nice and humble. DO NOT GET ANGRY. go home, cry for 10 minutes, rub one ou.... nvm XD go to the gym and on to the next.

I had a very rough childhood and was later diagnosed with PTSD. I found that music and ESPECIALLY learning (self taught) to play and playing my guitar really is healing and a great way to calm and dispel some of that anxiety and depression. (Plus the girls will really dig that you play an instrument) I think learning to play any musical instrument of your interest would be helpful. It in fact positively changes the brain and boost serotonin and dopamine levels that are your feel-good chemicals. I had to rely on guitar/music books, but with today's social media sites like UA-cam there are some great free tutorials literally at your fingertips. I still play and I listen to music every single day. On my way to work, on the way home, in the shower, when I go outside or in the evening. Music is my medicine. Also try to be patient with your family, they just love you so much and want what is best for you. Life can be quite hard at times, but many beautiful things are still to come your way. It's incredible that his detractors don't get down to the essence of his argument/stance - that you can't be listened to on macro issues if you can't handle your personal micro issues. I saw this in college myself - it wasn't climate change, it was Apartheid and women's rights (which never goes away). When you are able to (or encouraged to) throw out a big issue that, let's be frank, is a real concern for society or the world as a whole, you don't have to be introspective and look in the mirror at your self and your own issues. Let's face it, a 16-25 year old is probably the most selfish person around, and everything is a life or death issue (or at least feels that way). If you also notice, all of these huge issues are first world problems. Do you think a family in the Amazon region or Africa is having debates about climate change? They're worried about having wood for a fire and food for tomorrow. Do you think they're worried about transgender rights? I don't think so. Are women in the Middle East, Africa, Indonesia, SE Asia, writing articles about the patriarchy and equal rights? It's easy to complain (or should I say 'whine') when it's easy to find a sounding board that will listen to you. The women (and men) of the west have no clue how truly blessed they have it. We were all born on third base and congratulate ourselves like we actually hit a triple or complain that we weren't granted a home run.

I think Jordan was right to point out that people sometimes go after large scale issues as an excuse to not have to actually develop themselves in any serious way, while appearing virtuous.
"Yeah, I could develop the discipline necessary to take care of myself, my family, and my local community, but I have more important things to do-- like addressing climate change!"
Really? At the very least, that requires knowledge of climate science, but if you want to develop (or suggest) any possible solutions, that requires knowledge of hard sciences: physics, chemistry, materials science, just to name a few. What does it take to establish competence in such fields? It requires discipline; it isn't easy and it takes time. How do you acquire discipline? You don't do it by diving head first into a problem that's lightyears outside your field of competence. Anyone who seriously wants to tackles climate change must know these things, so if you claim to want to tackle climate change and you _don't_ , that seems to indicate that you aren't being serious, that you're just morally posturing. I think that's what the "pseudo-moralistic" part of the title meant.
Edit: One other thing to point out (to actually answer her question) is that there's basically two approaches you can take to climate change, if you really want to help: You can either be a science communicator of sorts that tells the public about the nature of the problem and proposed solutions (this is the quickest and easiest way to start taking action), or you can do the science. Being a communicator takes a certain level of knowledge though; otherwise you're just regurgitating things that scientists say, whether or not they're really practical (or possible). Also, as a communicator you can only work as fast as scientists produce output, so the science is really the bottleneck here. Our biggest problem *isn't* a lack of awareness. You'd be hardpressed to find anyone who isn't aware of climate change. The problem is that we don't have enough people willing to acquire the technical knowledge needed to produce solutions, so if you really want to speed things along, do the hard work.

    • @AtrusOranis
      @AtrusOranis 2 роки тому +2

Actually, some of the best stuff I've heard regarding helping humanity long term comes from an Economist, Bjorn Lomborg.
And, while I'm not on the cutting edge of research, a lot of the proposed solutions are not as environmentally friendly as some would like to think.
      For example: Solar Panels
For the record, good solar panels can, in fact, have less of a carbon footprint than coal powerplants throughout their lifespan. But it really isn't as beneficial as some claim. for one, Solar panels need to use Silicon. Silicon rarely, if ever, comes in pure form, but rather tends to come from high purity sand and quartz, which is Silicon Dioxide (SiO2). In order to get rid of the Oxygen, you need to bond it with something else. Usually this takes the form of either Coke (coal) (C), Methane (CH4), or Hydrogen (H2). You see the problem. If you used coal, that gives you Carbon Dioxide (SiO2 + C = Si + CO2). If you use methane, you get half the amount of CO2 reactions ( 2xSiO2 +CH4 = 2xSi + 2xH2O+CO2). Finally, you can use hydrogen! but hydrogen doesn't usually come naturally, it's usually made from methane and water in a process called Steam Methane Reforming. The result gives you 5 molecules of H2 and 1 molecule of CO2. this means every reaction gives you 5 molecules of Si for every molecule of CO2! Which is GREAT! But it's more expensive because there are more links in the chain to get from point A (SiO2) to point B (Si).
Why am I saying all this? Not sure, but perhaps it can give some perspective in the complexity in the actual issues facing those who DO have to figure out how to tackle the challenge, and the kinds of sacrifices one has to make just for ONE part of the puzzle.

This is my first ever comment on youtube, but I must tell you this. I have been following Petersons lectures and ideas for a couple of years now here on youtube. I am a dancer, I play the didgeridoo, I studied psychology at a liberal arts university, became a therapist and a teacher, and literally dropped out of the whole game, to paint houses. I wanted to be able to speak my mind, and the social climate regarding free speech was like a strait jacket for me. It is like mind candy for me to hear him separate out truth from lies so brilliantly, it seems the same for you. Its like listening to a perfect score or the" I have a dream" speech. In my studies at universities and in 10 years teaching, I have dealt with so many Cathy Newman types, and to see how quickly and sharply you react to Jordans witt, makes me feel like having faith in humanity again. I somehow fall into a pattern of feeling like, I dress up in my rags I call paint clothes, go to work, listen to him think all day, along with other great thinkers, in isolation I feel strange being so moved. Its like a secret hobbie that my freinds accept, but they don't really understand and often try to help me balance to no avail. Not too many people are watching or listening to how his mind works in the way that you do. Like a musical person can listen to great music and even recognize it as great music, you can listen to words and recognise great words instantly. That is your superpower! I wish you so much luck on your channel and I suggest you keep going deep, like the roots of a tree its not till you go deep enough that you discover the underground currents of our human genius. He is deep, Carl Jung is deep, Alan Watts is deep. Like with good music, if you listen deeply enough to the way a great thinker thinks, you get a sense of the song, the style, and you imitate it naturally. You wouldn't even continue to listen or pay attention to it, our most prised currency if someone didn't have a gift worth imitation. So a prodigy can listen to Jimmy, really hear Jimmy, and through the supperpower we have as human to play and imitate, play like Jimmy. So Jimmy dies, but the next generation keep him alive as a possibility in the collective we call music and thought. The dance of sound and words is this whole worlds play,, you are not dancing but as a dancer I respect your dance style my friend.

Strongly suggest just listening to his podcast with Yeonmi Park on her experiences in North Korea, and his podcast with Mohamedou Slahi on his experience in Guantanamo Bay.
Another great one is from his "personalities" series, I believe it's #13, where he explains Solhyetzein's experiences and work. I feel that one is specifically related to this video in particular because of his explanation of the Russian people's unintentional bringing about of the horrors of Lenin and Stalin, specifically due to their lack of personal responsibility to stand up and say something before it was to late, perhaps due to their nihilistic world view (at least as far as i understood it, and can explain it in limited space.)
Seriously, politics & personal opinions aside (which, Dr Peterson maintains he is a classical leftist, with serious disdain for all forms of radicalism, especially in politics), there is so much to learn from him, outside of these snippets of arguements and terrible interviews.

Hiya Alex, it is really great that you've branched out your channel into reacting to stuff like this - really enjoying it (the metal stuff was good but I was starting to tune out heh).
I've listened to a ton of Peterson's stuff, including his uni lectures (which are really good) and his bible series (which are even better), and there are consistent, unwavering themes that you can see throughout everything he says. You can see it regardless if he is in a Q&A session like the clip, a longform lecture to 4000 people, a small uni tutoring class or debating Shaperio or Sam Harris. I'm sure he's modified and adjusted things along the way but at the root of it, he is saying the same basic stuff now that he said at the beginning.
Much too often these days, people "debate" from a point of view of "you are wrong, I'm telling you you're wrong and you can never be right because I am right" and no-one seems to acknowledge that there could be another, equally valid opinion, or set of opinions, for a given situation/discussion/problem/whatever. I really like that you are approaching these reactions from the point of view of watching HOW Peterson (and Shaperio, etc) SPEAK and ENGAGE with whomever they are speaking, which is really really really important to highlight because I think we may have forgotten a lot of it. I think you stating that you want to emulate what they are doing is actually a good thing - it can only improve how you operate in the world and run your life :)

I always had problems taking on small projects because I left some other thing occupying my to-do list(promising myself I'll get back to it) and, not sure which to tackle first, as a result I'd likely I'd get done neither. When you have all your ducks in row you have the capacity to tackle on more. It's difficult to enact positive global change when your life is a mess. And he actually proved it with his own life example later: personal life troubles and lifestyle change and popularity/notoriety nearly killed the man.

His approach to the topic reminds me of the "Kaizen method". Kaizen is an approach to creating continuous improvement based on the idea that small, ongoing positive changes can reap significant improvements. Typically, it is based on cooperation and commitment and stands in contrast to approaches that use radical or top-down changes to achieve transformation. So, begin small by improving yourself first, you are able to tackle more difficult and broader tasks. It works with improving yourself, based on your habits or ego, and it works in organizational improvement. So, I agree that starting with yourself is the right approach to tackling any topic. The problem is that it takes time to improve, but it took time to get society, climate, job market and other things the lady was talking about into this state.

    Clean your own room....
When Peterson refers to cleaning your room it doesn't literally mean having your house in order or cleaning your room though it can... What it means is that you need to get your life in order, period.
If you want to help the environment and get your s*** together go to school and figure out how to help the environment through technology, innovation, or anything else.
Laws do not prevent people from thinking or acting in a certain way. They're there to punish people after the ACT.
If you don't want people to be racist then don't raise your kids to be racist.
You don't have to keep preaching to them race race race race, you have to teach them to be good hearted and kind people..
keep in mind at some point history is no longer taught as modern history, but as a subcategory of the main subject...
Unless a kid for example in high school takes the elective Greek mythology they aren't going to learn much about the Greeks other than a few dates...
At some point slavery in America needs to stop being taught as a main subject, and start being taught as an elective... Ie African-American history...
At some point the problems of our ancestor are no longer our problems... And we have to stop blaming current issues on what they did...
And start coming up with solutions that actually work instead of trying to point fingers or create more arbitrary laws that are meaningless in today's day and age..
Pollution didn't exist just because it was...
It exists because we created solutions for other problems without law forcing it...
You don't want slaves for mass production, then you create the industrial era...
You don't want to have to use inefficient steam base technologies then you create combustion technology...
You don't want to have to rely on manual mechanics all the time then you rely on the creation of electronics...
You don't want to pollute the world then you create a technology that uses pollution as it's source removing it from the environment...
You don't create laws and restrictions to prevent people from using the products that created the pollution... This of course does not include stuff that would kill you within a day to a few years..

The message is if people focused on improving themselves or becoming the best version of themselves the world as a whole would improve as a consequence. It seems to me that people have a problem with that message because introspection and taking responsibility for yourself are two very difficult things so its easier to blame the world for their problems.

Since you mentioned you're interested in stoicism, I have to recommend The Practicing Stoic by Ward Farnsworth. He's a lot like Peterson in terms of his range of thought and readability. I've read his books on everything from subtle points of law (he served, until quite recently I think, as the dean of the University of Texas School of Law) to philosophy and rhetoric to chess. But the book on stoicism is a really good and accessible introduction to the topic. I used it as the basis for my own video about stoicism because I think Farnsworth really cut to the heart of the matter.

Loved the “Do you think….” And his reply was simply the word “No.” no immediate clarification or exposition just a simple one word answer and a pause, classic psychological use of the human language and cadence.

Jordan's short clips on panels are great but its too politicized. He is best when he is on podcasts especially when he's on Joe Rogan where he goes into deep conversations. I would highly recommend his psychological analysis of the Bible series as well as his Maps of Meaning Lectures. Very insightful!

    Her question in two parts:
    1) What should we do about the world's largest problems?
    2) How should young people pursue those changes?
    His answer in two parts:
    1) I don't have advice on climate change because I'm a psychologist, not a climatologist.
    2) If the climate bothers you, pursue THAT. In order to make excellent large changes, you have to make yourself into an excellent specialized tool. You have to acquire specific skills and also practice excellence in execution.
Thanks for the code, Alex! I'll enjoy this!

Asking questions to guide someone to an answer is called the Socratic method. And, while he does use it well, it's not a style he champions as often as you might think. For the most part, he simply answers questions very straightforwardly with facts so simple and poignant that they bite hard. It's a very brute-force style, and it doesn't work for most people BECAUSE they can't remain stoic. So, he takes that very direct approach but softens it with his relaxed demeanor, while adding in an insanely high level of intelligence that he somehow keeps accessible to the average brain (while also challenging them to become smarter.)

I think some people take it too literally, like your house has to be perfectly clean to be allowed an opinion. Then they go "so you're saying people who can afford house-keeping are worth more as human beings?". lol

The point is that you influence the immediate ppl around you , then the ppl around you influence the ppl around them. Having ones house in order allows you to have the time to put real effort needed into them the time you spend helping others ,if your house is in chaos you dont have the luxury of effort and time needed to help others.

We have a saying that goes something like "Like a rat fixing a vase", referring how someone unqualified tries to fix something and only making it worse
If you can't clean your own room, why do you think you can reorganize the society without making it worse?

Totally agree that individual responsibility outweighs collective responsibility, especially when you consider that without individual responsibility there is no collective responsibility. If the government initiates a tax to change environmental practices, it is the individual's responsibility to pay that tax. If the individual does not, then the collective fails. If individuals do not recycle, then the collective effort to recycle fails. However, without a collective effort to recycle, an individual is still able to recycle. Clearly, individual responsibility must exist of the time for collective responsibility to exist, whereas collective responsibility does not need to exist for individual responsibility to exist.
