So as a 34 year old black man, I am gonna say this. Have I been profiled because of my skin? Absolutely. Have I been called a racial slur? Absolutely. Do I believe that I have been hindered in some areas of my life due to the color of my skin? Absolutely. HOWEVER, I have also been given an immense amount of opportunities and blessings that have overshadowed the negativity and have allowed me to become successful.
Did I work hard for what I have? Absolutely, and no one can take that away from me. I agree with Ben on this argument. We should stand with one another when it comes to injustices rather than sit and point fingers due to the belief that one person has privilege over another based on the color of their skin.
I treat every single person with respect, regardless of what they look like. If everyone else did the same, we would be much better off.

A lot of whites and asians also faced the same issues. Im sure if a white guy goes into a black neighborhood on a daily basis he would be profiled or received some racial slurs every now and then. But they wouldnt even bother. Its only offensive if people made it offensive. If you just ignore it and be like, ok whatever. It wouldnt hurt you and you just go on and be productive and be happy in life. You cant expect everybody to always be civil. Thats life. Just keep on doing the right thing in life and you would be ok.

Well said, Sir. I find it fascinating and more than a bit ironic that taking your comments and going in reverse is how things seem to be going for many caucasians today: I've said nearly word for word your last sentence, and been castigated for it, being told to check my privilege, and how nice is must be to be white and able to live that way, and think that way...which segues into your middle paragraph, and finally, how things are starting to go: Have I been treated with hostility because of my skin? As I get older, more and more. Racial slurs? Yes, same as the previous question, more and more. Hindered? Not that I've noticed, yet, but one wrong step or one person taking something wrong and cancellation/termination is frighteningly possible nowadays.
We live in a topsy-turvy world, My Friend, and I wish we could do like Ozzy said and "Learn how to love and forget how to hate"

Agree 100%, as a long haired motorcyclist I have been profiled in certain stores and venues as soon as I've walked in by people with absolutely no knowledge of who I am or what I'm about. I don't let it bother me as I think it's their own insecurities about their own shortcomings.

I think racism, from my life experiences, seems very one sided. White people are racist towards black people. I am a white male that did door to door sales for about six months and in that time, I literally got ran out of black communities just because of my skin color. People would answer the door, say some sort of racial slur, and threaten me that I would get beat/stabbed/shot/etc if I did not leave. That happened A LOT, yet if I bring that up as a white male, I'm labeled racist. We cannot truly move forward as a society until everyone acknowledges all sides of the argument, understands/listens to each other, and works together.

I live in the ghetto n in the ghetto where as a single white woman I hear random slurs & sht thrown at my house & routine gun shots.
I never know when it's personal but the vandalism. can feel v hurtful & I get threatened, everything I grow is stolen, even flowers
But then I see it's happening to everyone but I'm an easy target. One can't chase a 20yo when one is 74 & the police are fearful of coming here unless they come in 6 - 7 vehicles. I've seen them come in military gear, with tree branches stuck in their helmets ..they scare me more than rowdy neighbors lol don't expect to sleep at the beginning of the month when it's check day 😅
      I'm confused.
I remember segregation. I'm glad to have had black friends. But I see a strong tendency among blacks to want to exclude whites
Cognitive dissonance is what I see & recognize in both communities

As a child, the neighborhood my family lived in, for many years, was changing from white to mostly black. My family was the last white family there, and we weren't planning on moving, at least not right away. We lived about 1/2 a mile from my school, so I walked to school. I was subjected to horrible name calling every day, bullying, rocks were thrown at me almost every day, even broken glass. After the third visit to the ER my parents decided we had no choice but to move. I grew up with a VERY bad opinion of black people, based on my own personal experience, i.e., they almost killed me the last time. Stitches on 2 different places on my head and another on my face, a broken arm, dislocated shoulder, and bruised ribs. I really believe they would have continued beating me til I was dead or permanently maimed if a car driving by hadn't stopped and chased them away.
I never actively discriminated or anything, but I avoided them as much as I possibly could. It wasn't until I went to college and was assigned a black roommate that I started to understand that maybe they WEREN'T all like that. I eventually made friends with my roommate, and through him, quite a few other black people.
It's likely that I have still unconsciously had some views that weren't very charitable toward black people, but I have worked hard to overcome that as I have grown older, and I can honestly say I have never let race cause me to treat any employees of mine, or people I have interacted with in my day to day life differently.
But I can guarantee you that racism doesn't come from whites only.

The problem with this whole "white privilege" argument/theory, is that it is virtually indistinguishable from "majority privilege". Listen closely to the content of the discussion supporting the concept of white privilege and ask yourself if the same could not be said about being born as the majority race/ethnicity in any country.
Conversely, what if I was born white in a country like Somalia or Nigeria? Would I still have "white privilege"? I'm guessing no.
There are different types of privilege, and sure you could argue that there's majority privilege as well as wealth privilege, but these exist in every culture, do they not?

This comment exudes ignorance or lack of global knowledge, to say the least. If you were to live on Negira as a White person, best believe that you'd be privileged, even more so that locals (and Nigeria isn't the only one by the way). That "majority privilege" always falls short on South Africa's example. South Africa has been immensely scarred by the Apartheid, enforced by White afrikaners and their political party, the National Party, in 1948. And best believe that by that particular time, Black people in South African were the overwhelming majority just like they've always been and will always be as this country is literally their homeland. However, had they not been treated worse than cattle over there, as if they were a small minority, by a small minority?

    • @BroJo676
      @BroJo676 2 роки тому +6

@@antalpoti The vitriol White Zimbabweans, especially Hite farmers, are receiving in this country is a direct result and reflection of local Black Zimbabweans' spite as these farmers were able to "earn" and "possess" their vast acres of arable lands thanks to Apartheid (Apartheid wasn't just enacted in South Africa), by brutally stealing land from the locals and budging them without their consent.
If White Southern Africans, in general, collectively wanted to better the situation on their inhabited countries a'd induce unity with the locals they had made sure to brutalized just so they could make a living out of it, they should've also made sure to give back lands to the locals, part of the normally bestown reparation system.
However, this is something you and I, especially I, both know they chose not to do. And this creates this very intense situation where Black people are willing to attack in order to compensate for the poverty a racist sociopolitical and economic system had forced upon them.

I see how this could be confusing, I think a part of your privilege is not what gets you further in life but rather what is not holding you back. And, we have to continue to discuss privilege and difficult topics or else we will remain stuck. Another thought I have recently heard, and continue to think about, is, that wanting to stop hearing about privilege and topics such as that, is proof of your privilege. This is because someone who is truly affected by the negative effects of privilege will have a need to continue to talk about it while others just choose to be interested and choose when they are done talking about it.

@@tatumkhanna9062 I can appreciate your point of view, and you might be right, but I would have to argue that if something doesn’t have any defining characteristics, no way to be identified, cannot be measured, and has no measurable effect, it most likely doesn’t exist.
I would also make the point that we are not “stuck”, the only people that are stuck are the people that continue to point to other’s as a validation for their own lack of achievement.
For argument’s sake, let’s say that this white privilege does exist….ok, and then what? What would anyone like me to do about it? And even more importantly, why is someone else’s privilege or lack there of, any factor in their own success?
People need to stop all the blaming, being a victim, finger pointing, and accept that life sucks for everyone, and the only thing we can do, is give it our best.

@@jschneider5500 No offense, but the first sentence is just bullshit. First of all, there defintely is a measurable effect, look at the median income of black and white households compared, if that´s not a measurable effect of white privilege, idk what is. And of course there are defining characteristics.
"point to others as a validation for their own lack of achievement", ok, come on, that´s absolute bullshit, that´s just your personal prejudice.
You personally can do nothing, it´s not your fault, that you were born the way you´re born. It´s a systemic thing, and the entirety of society has to find solutions for it. "What can I do about it" is often a question, that can´t be answered and shouldn´t even be asked in the first place, another example for this would be climate change, the individual can do almost nothing about it, you can try to lower your emissions all you want, as long as cars, planes, factories and all that shit continue to pump co2 in the atmosphere, it wo´t do anything. See what I mean? That´s btw the reason, why (and you are right on that one) finger-pointing won´t lead to anything. Systemic solutions would include: more social welfare, less police in mostly black neighbourhoods, more spending for public schools, lowering the costs for colleges (student debt, wtf, I live in germany and I get money from the state for studying), legalisation or decriminalisation of most drugs, more medical, psychological and social offers for assistance (like anti-drug-workshops, sport clubs, psychotherapy,..) and stuff like that.
"Accepting that life sucks for everyone", well, then we can stop doing politics completely, if we would have just accepted, that life is shitty for everyone, and we can´t do nothing about it, then we would still live in caves and hunt animals for survival. "Life will never be perfect, so stop trying", bruh, ok, then let´s just all commit suicide I guess. Yes, life is never perfect, but we can at least try to make it better, can´t we?

We have seen, time and again, FALSE claims of racism, and standing and/or fighting against racism BEFORE the facts are known, does more harm than good in trying to root out actual racist incidents. And far too often, we get fed a story as factual before the facts are known, and by the time that the facts DO come out, so much damage has been done to our society that simply cannot be regained, and which only serves to further the divide between people.

I went to college. I worked every year of my life since I was 14 to pay for things for myself. I bought a cheap car. I paid for college. I got student loans. I got a job. I paid them back. I now have a nice little bit of property, a nice house, a beautiful wife and daughter, and a nice truck.
Where is my privelege? I have worked for everything I have and ever have had since I was a teenager. I'm not special. My story is like a million others. Anyone can do what I've done in this country. Be smart, be responsible, be respectful. It's that simple. No one is systematically keeping anyone down. Now EVERYONE has to be judged on the color of their skin. Not just white or black but literally every ethnicity is now judged for the race to which they belong.
Not going to take anything seriously until we can acknowledge, AGAIN, that every race can be racist. If you believe your race is superior to another based solely on race, you ARE a racist.

But alas, my skin is white. Therefore, in many people's minds I cannot be non-racist. My racism is for many a default, knee-jerk presumption.
As you might imagine, this makes dialogue extremely difficult in the current culture. I have to fight against my own pessimism regarding whether we as a society have the capacity and will to crawl out of our foxholes and shake hands. I pray we do.

I understand what is meant by “White Privilege” in the context of history, but does that apply in today’s standards? By such standards, affirmative action can be construed as “Black Privilege” & has been used in today’s standards. If I am a business owner with a position open & have 10 applicants only 1 of which is black & the least qualified & I am forced to hire based on skin color (black) then aren’t I being oppressed? I want to hire based on the best applicant to help my business succeed. I don’t care about race, religion nor ancestry, my business is about making money. If the best applicant is black, brown, red, yellow, white, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Shinto, Atheist, Straight, Gay, male, female, old or young, I don’t care. I want who’s going to generate the most money for my company. Some black folks think companies should be half black & half white. Well if we hire (being fair by skin color) then companies in America could only be 13% black because that reflects the population. Companies, by law, can be minority owned & staffed completely by that minority, but white owned must be diversified. This is hardly “white privilege” & I am sick & tired of hearing it. If anyone wants the best position & most income get educated & work for it like anyone else. Think the police are arresting too many black folks, teach & enforce your children against committing crimes. Do not tolerate street gangs. Make your children learn in school & make schools accountable not for black history but for the subjects that they need to be the best. If they have a hard time learning, help them or get them help. If you can’t help them, get more education yourself so you can. Keep drugs out of your neighborhoods. Don’t fight the system, get involved. If blacks want reparations, go to Africa, find the tribe which enslaved your ancestors, sold them & demand it from them. They are the evil that started your family’s path.

I’m not sure why this isn’t handled on an individual case-by-case basis. I think the main problem here is the premise regarding equity, and that somehow all racial groups should have an equal number of racist interactions, which is simply not possible in a free society. It's not even possible biologically since there will always be clumps of genomes associated with certain traits. Advantages and disadvantages.
Are we going to address height privilege or weight privilege next? Hair color privilege? People with specific bone structures?
Humans are preferential in nature, some things will be more liked or more disliked, including physical appearance.
The sooner we accept that we are ONLY equal under the law, the sooner we can move on.
Providing extra 'help' to certain demographics is the exact opposite.

This isn´t about race (well at least not, like you think). God, why are so many people here so stupid?
Ok, you´re on to something here: What about people with different heights. Let´s imagine, european colonialists would´ve enslaved people not based on their skin color, but based on their height, or idk, based on wether their breath stinks or not. Then we wouldn´t have the problem of white privilege, but instead the problem of "bigger-height-privilege", or "not-so-stinky-breath-privilege". You see what I mean? Whites are not privileged because they´re white, whites are privileged, because they were the master race, and because they built a system, that benefits them. The important fact is, that one group has historically been, and still is, oppressed, and the other hasn´t/isn´t. That one of these groups is white, and the other black, this is pure coincidence, and thus claiming, that being against white privilege is racist, is pure nonsense.
Now, after we have established this, of course it makes sense, to support the historically oppressed group, improve their material reality, improve the infrastructure that they have acces to, give them more public and political representation, etc. "Moving on" is just stupid, imagine what would´ve happened in the 50s, when jews demanded reparation from germany for, you know, this holocaust-thing. Imagine what would´ve happened, if germany just said "well, we´re sorry for killing 6 Million of you, but come on guys, we can´t be all equal, we have to move on"

    • @illumonic9026
      @illumonic9026 2 роки тому

I believe racism extends from our bias or subconscious bias, but ultimately I think it is just survival instincts based off fear. When we fear something, we group that something as a whole to make sure it does not affect us at all. This comes from all people, no matter the color. You must be aware and know the deep reasoning of what your mind is doing when it comes to these thoughts, actions, defenses, ect. Our own bias causes much more social problems than just racism. People do this to protect themselves or their own groups they reside in, it does not mean it is right. For example, there is fat shaming... that extends from not wanting to be unhealthy so they are ridiculed and/or excluded from the group. Remember there is nothing to fear but fear itself. ;) Privilege is just based on biases. All should have privilege, but it's not easily possible based on how humans think. For example, do you think a few hundred White people living with a few thousand Black people would get any bias or less privilege from the blacks? Most probably. I guess the main thing everyone needs to overcome is fear in general. You must ask yourself why you fear it and should you fear it, but exclude fear automatically if it is based on the unknown. Don't fear what you don't understand.
