  • Tesla's trip planner built into all of its vehicles tells you where to stop, for how long, and calculates so many things to give you an accurate and confidence-inspiring view of how to get where you're going - particularly on longer trips with charging stops. Here's how to use it as well as the energy monitoring app.

    Great video guys. I am amazed at how accurate the Tesla trip planner has become over the past seven years. Back in the day, it was more of a guess-o-meter and a lot of range anxiety.

    One issue that you guys didn't cover is, can you specify how much charge that you wish to arrive at your final destination, rather than typically the Tesla routing will have you arrive at your final destination with

      If the trip planner recommends charging for 10 minutes to arrive at the final destination with 15% and I want to get there with a higher SOC, I just keep the car plugged in until the trip planner shows the arrival SOC that I want.

    Been making a lot of ~260 - 300 mile trips in my '23 M3LR. Getting more and more trust with the trip planner estimated remaining SOC to next charger. If things start looking "tight", can always slow down, modify the AC/heat, etc. I've stopped shooting for ~20% remaining down to closer to 5%-10% remaining. This sometimes requires a manual override of the trip planner to skip the "next" SC and push on to the next one past that. Not fully 'out of spec' cause the wife's sitting w/ me. Good stuff guys!
    One note, A Better Route Planner can be better in many ways as you can list your current state of charge, how much SOC you want at destination, etc etc. More robust planner vs. the Tesla built-in. I use both at times, especially for a "new" trip I haven't been to yet...not sure of SC locations, etc.

    Even if you don't own a Tesla, the Tesla trip planner is extremely useful if you ever rent one. Range anxiety, in general, is a much bigger deal when driving an unfamiliar car, since you don't have that hard-earned knowledge of how the car will behave over every conceivable driving condition - the Tesla trip planner eliminates it.
    The Tesla trip planner also comes in handy at the very end of the trip when you're trying to charge up the car to the minimum level to avoid additional fees (75% when I did it). Instead of having to guess, you just plug into the supercharger, navigate to the rental car return, and let the computer tell you when you have enough. Very easy.

    Questions:
    The web browser can be used while driving.
    1. In addition to Tesla's navigation directing me to Tesla Superchargers, is there any way to use Tesla's GPS + the browser using: Google Maps, ABRP, PlugShare, etc. to direct me to the nearest non-Tesla charger? I know I can see this on my phone. I'm wondering if I can see this on the Tesla screen so I can be routed to the nearest, say, ChargePoint charger.
    2. Is there any way to manually precondition the battery so, when I'm ~15 minutes from the charger, I can warm the batteries for faster charging?

    In my current PHEV, when set to EV-Only mode, the map will display two concentric rings.
    The inner being the "get there and back" range and the outer "one way only before the gasoline engine turns on."
    Does the map in a Tesla have the option to show "there and back" radius of operation versus the "Max range - battery will be depleted" radius?

      When you set a destination in the Tesla trip planner and it takes a few seconds to calculate the arrival % SOC, by default it’ll give an estimate in smaller text at the bottom of the screen for “round trip ____%”
      And when you are on the map and you tap the screen once you then see the charger/lightening bolt icon in the upper right corner. If you then click that, it’ll show all Supercharger locations on the map area that’s you’re already looking at. So that’s a quick way to know if you have backup locations in range if you’d need them.

    • @pauld6967
      @pauld6967 8 місяців тому

      @@skyemalcolm Hmm, I suppose both of those may suffice. Thank you.
      I would still prefer two concentric circles: "here is how far you can go if you want to come back home without recharging" and "here is how far you can go if you don't want to recharge until you are at your destination."

    • @skyemalcolm
      @skyemalcolm 8 місяців тому

      @@pauld6967 if your home base was that important I suppose the circles are important and to show them makes sense.
      But my Long Range Model 3 charges at 120-140 kW average (not peak) power vs 6 kW for most PHEVs means to refill the Model 3 takes less than 1/20 the charge time of a PHEV so charging just isn’t a burden when I’m stopping on longer trips or even doing a long day trip. I used to have a PHEV and I was constantly looking for and pondering if I had time to charge the car. Now if I just follow the trip planner I rarely ever need to plan around it.

      @@skyemalcolm For me it isn't a question of "what is in range of home base" as that would become apparent pretty quickly.
      I look at it from the "okay, in a new town on a vacation trip, it's a new day and I have just had the complimentary breakfast at the hotel and charged up overnight, what is within range that I might want to zip over to and back without worrying about needing to get some electrons?" point of view. 🙂

    The idea that I have to plan my "refueling" during my trip is annoying. It happened all the time when I drove electric, after a dozen trips across Europe I switched back to gasoline, no refueling planning anymore, only trip planning.

    • @kennethhandin5506
      @kennethhandin5506 8 місяців тому

      You never have to plan where to stop and refill the gas tank? My Hyundai Elantra had a 15 gallon tank and I had to have an approximate idea where to stop to refuel so as not to be in the middle of nowhere when I needed gas. Currently there are more gas stations than charging stations, but that is changing and will continue to do so over the next few years.

So basically I never have to think where I must refuel. When my car computer shows me that I have left with fuel for less than 150km (I think aroun 100 miles in american units :)) I start to look for a station.

    Tesla has a great trip planner, to be sure. But you can only avoid range anxiety by taking your trip by only using Interstate highways, because Tesla Superchargers are only located on Interstates, not US or State highways. That is the HUGE limitation of the Tesla Supercharger network, and is the one that Tesla needs to fix but currently has no plan to do so. Living in Denver where you are, you can only travel north or south on I-25 or east/west on I-70, because those are the only two roads where Tesla has Superchargers.

    • @glenngore6609
      @glenngore6609 4 місяці тому

      That is really rare across the US. For example, between I-25 and I-35, which covers the entire central US, there are only 6 Supercharger sites that are not located on an Interstate highway! 4 of those are on US 287 in Texas. The other 2 are in Clayton, NM and Lamar, CO. @@StormyDog

      Good, I am glad, because if you want to go anywhere in southeast New Mexico and over into the Texas high plains, good luck. Here is a quiz: Between I-25 and I-35/29 and north of I-40 all the way to the Canadian border,, find any Tesla Supercharger that is not located on an Interstate. That is 1/3 of the country. I will wait. (Hint: there is only ONE)@@spenceralston563
