- So you have the Tesla Model Y now and you want to embark on epic adventures. Road trips in the Model Y can be such an enjoyable thing to do, but be aware, there is some planning involved to make it a seamless Tesla adventure.
When taking any Tesla on a trip, it is wise to do some pre planning. Having the appropriate supporting apps on your phone can drastically improve your Tesla road trip experience.
In addition, there are some accessories you must have for the trip. Planning for multiple charging situations for your Model Y can be a vital step to take in advance. Having the right charging adapters, equipment to protect the car as well as understanding how to plan for charging stops are all equally important to the Tesla Model Y road trip experience.

BTG thanks another informative video, planning on taking our MY on a road trip this summer really good advice thanks
Good luck and enjoy the ride!
Awesome! I have the model y long range and planning a road trip from seattle to the california redwoods in June so this video has a bunch of good info.
Cheers
I just ordered my model Y and used your referral code! Thanks for the great videos!!!! :D
Cheers thanks so much for supporting the channel!
Another great vid! Thanks!
Cheers
Thanks those are great tips
Cheers
Did a road trip as well. Will be camping too and the adaptor I will get! Thanks
Good luck on your trip and just enjoy it!
Great video and great quality. Keep it up
Appreciate it!
I like your informative videos about the Model Y and recommendations for accessories. I was interested in your comments about the drooping sunshade and checked to see if you had the earlier version of the product I had purchased several months ago. The one you recommended is not currently available through Amazon and pricing is not listed. I purchased and am very pleased with the Tesmanian Version 2 sunshade, listing for $69.99. Their Version 2 solved the sagging problem by including two magnets which clamp onto metal washers which adhere to the underside of the glass roof. I suspect both your cover and the Tesmanian version are produced at the same Chinese factory, as they look almost exactly the same and have similar clamps to hold the product on the edges. Good work, and I will continue looking forward to your entertaining videos!
Thanks for sharing. I heard updates were coming to most of these on the market, and yes, I believe all these visors are made in the same factory. Its unfortunate but how it rolls I guess. I will keep an eye out for an updated version.
Great info! Preparing for our USA Tour: 2021 🇺🇸 in our Y and this information helps! 👍🏼🔋🔌 Great content, keep it up!
Woohoo, good luck on your trip!
Great video and tips!
Glad you liked it!
Nice thank you
Cheers
100% agree on the 3D Maxpider floor mats. I have them in my Model 3 and they are awesome. I’m hoping they make some for the 7 seater Y.
I know they are working on the 7 seat option as we speak
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Good to know. Thank you.
Very Nice!
Cheers
Great video, I do long road trips west coast to Midwest. Have quite a bit of the things you have. Will look into the 2 apps you like
It’s an awesome road trip car!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy yes it is. Will never go back to a ICE car again.
I recommend getting 70% tint on the front windshield. Helps with uv and heat coming into the driver on south bound road trips!
Good tip, thanks for sharing
make sure it's ceramic tint
You may want to consider tinting the rear door windows also for the kids. The factory color is only privacy glass. It does not provide UV or heat rejection. I tinted mine 50% so it didn't get much darker than it already is.
Good tip, thanks for sharing
Boiler up! I have a Purdue grad in the family,

Do you recommend having additional adapters like the official Tesla CHAdeMO Adapter just in case or do you think that the J1772 adapter is enough. Great content as usual.
I have never used nor plan on using a CHAdeMO adapter. Those adapters are very expensive and the EA chargers are not wide spread enough, at least today, to justify.
Great information! My 3 has 20" performance wheels and I'm concerned about long road trips. Would it be smart to invest in a spare?
Up to you. I don’t use one but would be a good safety to have I suppose
Thank you! How much does cold weather affect range?
Cold weather has an impact on range, mostly driven by the energy consumption of running the heater.
The Topfit phone holder works well and is in a convenient viewing location. Only issue is when grabbing the phone while in park my knuckle sometimes touches the Tesla screen and opens the drunk!
Not impressed with A Better Route Planner; trying to reset it while driving was often not successful (did not apply the changes). I eventually turned it off in frustration.
Yea, it can be clunky no doubt, but it does an amazing job planning out the route

Thanks for posting the links. Which exact adapter did you get for camping? I tried the link but looks like there’s several options
Its the TT-30P to 14-50. Looking at the options, they appear to be sold out of the correct one. I am looking for an alternative now.
At this time, this is the only one out there available on Amazon. This one will work: amzn.to/3tvQLKI
I wonder if you could sew a few small suction cups on top of that headliner to stop the sag...
Interesting idea
Is the PPF link in here? What kit did you buy? You got a video of install ? Lol
Yep! There is a DIY PPF video on the channel. I had a link at that point in this video to take you there
will that wireless charging phone dock work with the new center console in terms of where would you plug the cable in?
Yea, I plugged mine into the 12 v under the console
Talking about the crash in Texas, What auto pilot does when it detects no driver. disengage and stops?
Disengages and comes to a stop
Do you know if the Temai usb-c to lightning cables are Apple Mfi certified?
No I don’t
I haven’t taken a new trip since they updated the software and changed how to name trips. I’ve looked for how to do it but haven’t had any luck. Would you please advise? Thanks
In the car menu, go to trips. You can click on the trip you want to change and it pops up
This is a better phone holder and charger: TEMAI Tesla Model 3/Y Electric Phone Mount (Charge Before Use. Compatible with Pre-April 2021 Production-Pre-Refresh Air Outlet) - available on Amazon. Take a look...
I second this. It’s the best phone holder.
When you using A Better Route Planner, do you just plug in the next ABRP charger stop in the Tesla navigation and then update, or do you set the Tesla navigation to the final destination for the drive and override it's stops if they don't agree with ABRP?
Override stops most of the time. Sometimes I plug in the charger I want to check on charge level at arrival
@@BeardedTeslaGuy isn't there a pre-condition battery feature that you'll miss out on if you don't update the Tesla navigation? It would be nice if the Better Route Planner could "share" the info with Tesla navigation.
How about a spare tire ? You recommend taking one on trips
I don’t, but it’s probably a smart thing to have
Model Y now shows "Heated steering wheel" on their website!!! :)
About time
Why is everyone so obsessed about heated steering wheels? Out of my 11 cars I've ever owned, there's never been this feature and I've never wished I had it. Are everyone's hands cold?? 🤣
@@AznPrzsn assuming you do not live in the midwest, I mean yes you can just wear gloves, but the heated wheel is really nice..... I wish it had ventilated seats...
@@msbgone I live in MO, so I think that's considered Midwest. NOW YES, THAT, ventilated seats, I just saw that feature last year in an SUV for the first time, I would definitely LOVE THAT. And ventilated steering wheel. Don't care about heated anything. I'm always hot. lol I don't wear gloves either.
@@AznPrzsn It is one of those things what once you try you cannot go back... lol....
How about making coffee while on a road trip? 12v "cigarette lighter" or use an inverter with normal electric kettle?
There’s 2 12V in the car
Could you give me the name of the company you used for the mobile tinting. I live in the st. Pete area. Thanks!
Tint express
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thank you!
Hi Justin, I am in the process or ordering a new Model Y and would like to use your referal code, tesla is asking me to send to them so they can add to my order. Help?
No problem: Justin35851
Thanks so much for supporting the channel!
My understanding is from Chicago to Canada it will take 4 hrs of charging time in transit. Is that correct?
No lol. Every 2 hours of driving plan 20-30 min of charging
Where, who did mobile tinting. I’m having hard time finding reasonable tinter in Atlanta.
This was in St Pete
I used Sun and Shade in Alpharetta. Pleased with their service and pricing.
Which is the link to the front PPF? I can't find it.
It’s in the DIY PPF video
What is the name of the second app?
It’s impossible to understand.
A better route planner
since you have snacks and drinks in the car, it begs the question- what do you do with the trash? I used to hang a plastic grocery bag over the gear shift until I recently got my 2021 MY. Obviously that's not a solution anymore, so is there a trash holder idea or product that you use?
I keep the trash in a plastic bag until we stop and throw it all away at that point. I also usually have the boys snacks in a normal sized box from the store, so we usually fill their snack cups with crackers and such without having all the wrappers from individual packs.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy was thinking that fold up organizer might be a good option for my trash, just put a plastic bag inside of it. Thank as always for the informative vid
Wow people ask everything
You are too obsessed with all the extras. I guess it's cool.
Ha, fair enough. Just like the enhanced things that make the trip more comfortable.
What is the name of second app?
A better route planner and PlugShare
I would like to upgrade my acceleration to 4.2s in my model Y. do you think is it worthwhile and Can I feel the difference?
Oh you can feel the difference. It’s pretty nice
I did it yes it is noticeable thank you for your advice it’s better to pay 2000 instead of 10,000 for performance
I just got my Model Y about a week ago, I’m getting back pain from the driver’s seat, have you had anything like this??
make sure your lumbar support is adjusted to your comfort. The seats in the car are incredibly comfortable to me.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I lumbar support is really slow and sluggish is that normal
Pretty typical of lumbar systems I’ve experienced
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thanks for your help and great Videos , keep up the great work my friend
So you're going on a roadtrip to another state during a pandemic?
Many times this last year yes. Refuse to not live my life while following CDC guidelines for safety
To keep the roof shade from sagging, get a piece of 1/2” x 2” x 5’, from Home Depot, cut down to 41” , sand the ends, and fit it between the shade and the top of B pillar to hold the middle part of shade up. You can spray paint the wood to black to match the shade color. Problem solved!
