Hi Bjørn! Thanks for this video, the comparison is interesting! To give some additional information regarding the Chargemap app:
- A new algorithm will be released at the end of this year based on user feedback since the launch of the planner at the end of June 2021. This new algorithm will not only improve the overall results, but will also allow for the following: eliminate U-turns on motorway trips, avoiding very short stops to recharge the battery, increase flexibility by tolerating recharges of up to 90% (previously 80%), etc.
- Customisation: by clicking on the "Stations" button you can see all the charging stations around your route, and choose a preferred charging station (the planner will automatically recalculate the roaming according to your favorite). It's super convenient!
- For the reliability of the proposed charging stations, we rely heavily on the Chargemap community (see in the details sheet the comments of drivers, checkin, etc.)

Algorithms need to be tweaked for sure. I entered a route from my town (Vargön) to a location in the Gothenburg archipelago (Hönö), and then back - and your app suggested a 30km detour on the way back home for no apparent reason.
@@abraxastulammo9940 I also prefer ChargeFinder app, because the content is just so much better than the other options that are missing lot's of charging stations and have incorrect info.
I briefly tried Chargemap and quickly gave up. I chose a Tesla SR+ and it ignored the Superchargers completely...🤷♂️
It also seems to choose a route that is quite different from what any outer routeplanner uses...

Based on feedback from all Chargemap users, we have solved the problem with the new algorithm primarily in the French market, and by the end of the year the new algorithm will also be available in all countries. Indeed, you need to create a Chargemap account to use the route planner, so that you can enter your vehicle model, your preferences, if you have the RFID card Chargemap Pass, and that these last ones are recorded in your account. On the other hand, if you need to contact our support team with any questions, it is easier for us to answer everyone by identifying the Chargemap account in question. On the other hand, you have the possibility of using the Chargemap cartography without registration and thus to use the whole of the filters to find the recharging stations close to you. Bjorn, you have selected in ABRP at 11:31 the setting "Fewer Stops" which does as it says - fewer stops (at the expense of longer charging times). You missed this detail.
There are two better options: Balanced and Quickest arrival.
I find it’s normally best to leave the slider in the middle - you had it all the way to the left for fewer stops (but not necessarily fastest time).
You configured ABRP to take fewer stopps, maybe you should have went with quickest arrival instead. Anyway ABRP it is! The one and only for me, good piece of software thats worth to spend some money on.
Sure, I often play with this setting to compare "fewer stops", "quickest arrival" and "shorter legs" to see different options.
In France ChargeMap, is pretty good to check if chargers are operational but their planner isn't good yet

I think ABRP showed more charging time because you have set the charging stops to "less charging stops" :)

I see that their pricing model for their Chargemap pass indicates that “We charge a reasonable commission on each charging session“. I checked and it would cost me 0,10€ 0,12€ per kWh more than if I just use my normal charging cards…
Hello I have a kona ev 2022 it necessary to get an obd2 for abrp or is it going to communicate with the car without obd dongle?
I’ve downloaded Chargemap to try. It does now have maximum speed setting. Its not as comprehensive as ABRP, but as you say, its simpler. I’ll compare some of my routes and see how it does.
Chargemap maybe calculates to have the least stops possible. So you dont have to stop every 1hour 🤷♂️
So you stop less but for longer so you can chill / eat. I duno

This should be the next challenge. Same car, local knowledge versus the two apps and follow their routes explicitly to see which one yields the better trip in the real world and which one would lead a novice into trouble.

Tested Chargemap on planning my road trip through France : while ABRP planned my trip mostly using Ionity & Total Energie fast chargers along the highway, Chargemap was sending me through obscures chargers out of the highway. Not enough settings to change my preferences unfortunately.
abrp includes option to sync with the battery ODB2 dongle. It will adapt the route on real data. Also it allows to build a database of actual usage
@chargemap will this be feature to be included in Chargemap as well? As I really like the interface of chargemap.
Also I noticed on BOTH app that when you select 5% as minimum they always end up on 5%. I would prefer that it is really a minimum, but I would like to also have a preferred end charge percentage.
For example minumum of 5% but a preferred 20%. Then you can compare difference in time.

16:45 I experienced this level of lag too on my Samsung Note 8. I switched over to a newer phone this year and all the lag problems were gone. Seems like an optimization issue. What phone are you using here, Bjørn?
Samsung Galaxy S9+. It should be fast enough.
I go for ABRP. You need detailed configurability to get trustworthy estimates of your charging stops. Dumbing things down will not get optimal results imo.
ABRP seems to be better than the other from what you showed. To me, and I don't have an EV yet, it would seem that if the route planners allowed you to select the minimum charge rate you want then it could just exclude routing you to any of the slow chargers altogether. Now if ABRP has this function then I'd say stick with that one. If they both have it then it would be nice to see how they compare.

Not being a number Ninja but number numpty I do have concerns should I ever need to do a long trip in an ev. Only travelling in Britain though I guess ZapMap will do along with a good dose of common sense. Even though I find your calculations utterly baffling I thoroughly enjoy watching the process! ABRP should heed this video and prioritise chargers on the side of the motorway you are on.

Excuse my stupid questions perhaps. But in ABRP I select my car, Cupra Born, under chargers there is CSS and Type 2, then I plan a long route, and it often selects Tesla Superchargers along the way. How do you disable Tesla Superchargers that I can’t use?

I only plan the next stop on long trips. And notice me any alternatives. Things change along the way, like extra toilet visits etc.

A big problem with chargemap is that you can't avoid ferry. I can't use it to get from home to Copenhagen, so utterly useless to me.
Choose A.B.R.P. (A Bjørn Route Planner). It's probably the best.
Neither option seems to allow a preference of what speed chargers you’d prefer.
ABRP will automatically prefer the fastest chargers suitable to your chosen car, plus you can prefer certain networks (eg Ionity).

Kopple says on their side that they have added 6 (charging points)High speed chargers (up to 160kW) in Rendalstunet.
The 384 of ABRP seems too optimistic, but anyhow it faster than the older 75kW units.

I m also not at all satisfied with the chargemap route planner. One 1200 km trip I frequently do gets estimated by chargemap as about 2½ hours longer than it actually takes for me, while ABRP´s prediction is pretty accurate.
Would be interesting to see a video in which Bjørn has been parachuted in a country in which he is not familiar with and be challenged to drive an EV he has not driven from point A to B!

ABRP is not perfect either. I have tested it on Tesla model Y and it has few issues. For example changing road conditions to rain does not increase consumption. Also charging times are very optimistic (not LG pack) . If you arrive with high presentage charging follows maximum curve and same problem with cold weather as it assumes max charge rate.
Isnt the tesla route planner map better to use in a Tesla? I thought ABRP was better for non Teslas. 🤔
Chargemap doesn't list any of the chargers near me in the UK (and I have played around with the filters), so a total none starter here.
One thing to make Chargemap unusable:
Filter Applied in Page 1, does not work in route planner.
If you klick on stations in route planner, it will show all.

Check out speed to for gliders. Similar issue topping up in thermals verses loosing more height per km when flying fast. Plus head wind.
Is it better to drive slower if you save time topping up?
Air resistance is square function I think so not energy required isn’t linear. Drive faster you use lots more energy. Takes longer to fill up. But maybe more appropriate for slower chargers.
Strictly speaking, you‘re right, but most recent EVs have charging speeds way beyond what you could surpass by driving fast on a route like this. For the Tesla Model 3 LR, for example, given optimum distance between chargers and best charger options (Tesla Supercharger V3) the tipping point is around 190-200 km/h or even higher. For the EQC, which doesn’t charge as fast and is less efficient, it should still be at around 130-140 km/h. The speed limit in Norway is 110 km/h on multilane divided highways and 80 km/h on other country roads; so no worries here.

ChargeMap do est have most of the chargers in NZ so not that useful.
Does ABRP update stops if you dont do the recommended stops…say if you stay 10 mins longer at one stop?
ChargeMap doesn’t seem to work for CCS in the U.S.
Chargemap is really Beta, even Alpha version at this stage. Filter for charging types is needed to be really useful. Waypoints also.
I use it to locate local charging stations while on trips and the card is also covering a large panel of networks. But I noticed yesterday that the app is now displaying ads and you have to pay to skip these. Pretty disappointing as you have to pay for the card + they get a fee on the charging sessions + subscription for the app…
Way points are supported in the Chargemap app ;-) Just need to clic on the "+" near the starting point to add a new way point.

Chargemap feels like how most EV's bad built-in infotainment handles the trip planning.

For my Renault ZOE Q210 ABRP doesn't work that ideally, as it evidently makes no difference between 43kW (tethered) AC chargers and 22kW untethered public chargers. For motorway driving I do prefer the 43kW ones, obviously. But there seems to be no setting to force ABRP to prioritise them over the slower chargers (that are often some way off the motorway).
There is a setting to ignore Type 2 chargers. It is set to ignore by default for my i3
@@asymmetrx A Zoe Q210 needs AC43. Most apps see them as type2, too. Chargemap makes a difference in tethered or non-tethered. They call it 'Cable connected'

You can tell Chargemap what chargers you don't want to use. Start at 100kw if you wish. If you choose that it will ignore all chargers with lower charging capability.

Bjorn, you are a developer you should write your own application for everyone to enjoy :D
I would like to see a EV road trip, like you would drive a fossil car.
This means driving in new/not previously very known place, with no pre route planning and only looking for a recharge spot when the car range meter or charge gauge shows a stop is needed.
In other words, is it possible to have the freedom of the moment in an EV car ?
You wanna have something that's 10 years old as good as something that was refined in the last 100 years....
It does feel like Chargemap has an algorithm that maybe favors places that they make more money?
You prove that French are better than ABRP ;-). Actually Chargemap is much faster and not bad at all without complicated settings for 95% of people ;-). Me I do my way like you and just use those apps for kind of check ;-)

the fact that you cannot set your speed higher than the limit is a dealbreaker. you are an app user not a child.
These apps are useless in Scotland because they have no awareness of broken single site rapids which is the norm here. Good vid though :)

I think Bjørn said at least 10 years in one video, afaik - depending on where you live if course. In Norway Leaf has been selling big time since it came out.
Very chaotic video. Chargemap offers various options to adapt your trip. No sense in cursing about the app if you haven't looked at it first. I'm sure many apps do the same, but you didn't do your homework. Too bad.
