I think the most important setting you will want to play with is how much SOC you want at each supercharger and at your destination. The Tesla nav just tries to get you to your destination, but in reality you may want to have 50-70% of of SOC on arrival because you won't be able to charge while driving around there.

@@jasonfournier that's exactly correct the tesla nav does not take this into account and so i learned this in my first trip to the great smoky mountains so next time i travel on a long trip i plan to look for a place to charge closest to my destination...
In 1971 at 22 years of age, using a library book about motorcycle camping and touring in Europe , maps, and air mail, I planned a two month 3 country camping trip through Europe on a BMW motorcycle. The best trip I ever had by virtue of the satisfaction of depending on me and enhanced BECAUSE I did not have : computer, email, mobile phone, GPS, printer, cell phone, digital camera, dash cams, fuel gages, or trip planners of any sort . 50 years later still having fun touring in my TESLA (even though it is not a motorcycle!) Maybe I'll give ABRP a shot.
Hi Zac & Jesse. I just had my first drive of the Model #3. I live in a small town (Tobermory) in Ontario Canada and a friend just took delivery of theirs. They where kind enough to let me drive it and I can now see why you guys are so excited about these vehicles. They are awesome!!!

Super helpful video Zach, thanks a lot. I was not aware ABRP integrated into the Tesla Route Planner this way, or that it worked so well in the browser (with a new processor anyway). About to get a Model 3 and I will definitely use this.

I have been planning, with ABRP, several trips both to our holiday destination in France and day trips out from that base. I am delighted that I can now (after watching your video ) have ABRP navigation in the car. But, and this is a big BUT, will I be able to navigate with Enhance Auto Pilot whilst benefiting from ABRP's navigation. When we hit the Peage highways, we plan to try Navigate on EAP for the first time. I suspect not. However, who knows what changes have been developed since June 2019.

I'm grateful that you brought this tool to my attention, even though I drive a Chevy Bolt. I am using the tool to plan a cross continent trip from Oregon to Georgia, a much greater challenge with a Bolt than a Tesla :-( For example, to get through the Colorado Rockies, I will carry my Juciebox Pro 40 and be visiting a couple camp grounds which I work into my ABRP plan as waypoints. There are some problems with the tool, which I reported, but overall it is great! I've been using it so much, I felt compelled to make to donations to support the effort.
Thanks Zac, I love ABRP for planning trips at home. I however don't see a lot of benefit to using it in the car. The Tesla interface already has a Trip consumption graph that is real time and shows you energy, etc and also already tells me how much battery I will have left when I reach a Supercharger and how long I'll need to charge. Now if I wasn't using the Supercharger network, adding in breaks, wanted to bypass a Supercharger, or using an abnormal route then I totally get using ABRP in the car.
Excellent point, which I also was wondering about. I think you've hit on the specific cases in which using ABRP in your Tesla would be advantageous (e.g., adding in breaks, bypassing a Supercharger, etc.).
The best feature I like is the percentage of battery at arrival, some times I need to have enough to get back to the next charger. My destination not always has a charger available. Tesla need to have this feature in its own Nav.

The on route batteri warmer will not work.... , so have to sett the same setings in to 2 difrent programs. it great for your computer to planroute at home before you go on trip. :-/ ( im NOT login in to tesla acount)

Zac my interest is somewhat different than just finding the next supercharger. I'm a photographer and last year in 2019 I had bought a new Honda Accord Touring Hybrid. I know the nav system was very low res but I could look for restaurants, motels, pharmacy, grocery stores, and destinations of general interest. Isn't there more to life than just "where is the next supercharger"? Or do I only want to drive on Freeways where there are superchargers and forget all the sights, towns, parks, and other things are most often not on freeways? In other words I want a trip planner that allows me to find chargers along the pacific coast highway from California to Washington state and not be restricted to inland roads where all the fires are now. Ideas? It should also allow me to move my route from the most efficient inland route to the more scenic ocean drive and still pick up superchargers when I need them. I tried to use the Tesla nav on my Model Y and it kept wanting to put me on inland Oregon. I'd like to just select the route and move the route over to a coastal supercharger and then have it remap the routes using that selection. I'm an ex-software guy.
British units are great, we use miles but measure temperature in centigrade! It was really clunky switching between metric and imperial measurements!
COOL!!!!! now this is great and the fact that tesla gets better idea where to put its Superchargers and make the route better.. Remember in marketing.. Location location location matters.
Why would you use this vs the built in nav in the Tesla?

I'm jealous of how fast A Better Route Planner is on the Model 3. It's basically unusable on my 2017 Model S with AP2.0. I guess the upgrade from MCU1 to MCU2 was much more than an incremental improvement.

Why is it displaying Model X and mentioned several times in the Model 3? Is there no option?
I’m nervous about entering my Tesla account information, looking at API Token generator but does that also share my login credentials with a third party? Please explain how you are confident using this app.
I tried accessing ABetterRoutePlanner in my AP 2.0 MX, and I didn’t get the login banner you show at the beginning. Is that only for AP 2.5+ cars?
It's just SUPER, WAY slow on AP2.0 because you (and I) have the old MCU. It was updated in 2.5 in 2018, I believe. Kind of a bummer. They gave us upgraded cameras, and an MCU that's too slow to do much with them. It's also why we don't get the Tesla dashcam feature.
I wish you would show how it works with Android auto. When I select ABRP from my infotainment center it does not look quite like yours on Tesla.
The browser won't let me enter the password! As soon as I click on the password field, the keyboard goes away and it isn't allowing me to paste to it. How do I enter the password?

On my 2019 Model 3 the Tesla browser will not let me use the standard ABRP; I get a message "A Better Routeplanner really does not work well in the Tesla browser - try ABRP Lite version instead and use the smartphone app for advanced planning!" Then it switches to a ABRP Lite. There is no Tesla login requested nor do I get the Tesla Nav button. Also I cannot adjust any of the charging levels at the various supercharger locations (I am not yet comfortable arriving at 10% SOC at a location). The settings icon at each location is visible but when I click it to adjust so I arrive at a higher SOC nothing happens. Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

I have a 2019 m3.. am I... Do I have a browser? No rt... how do I use ABRP on my tesla? If I don't have a browser? They took a bunch of stuff away from the m3 (homelink) so I'm not sure what I'm suppose to have...
Can always run the site on your phone, I don't know how that will or if it can tie into your car. But it will still plan a route for you.

It works with non-Tesla chargers, which is especially useful in Europe where the Model 3 uses CCS.
A Better Routeplanner was useful for trying to determine the viability of using a Standard Range Model 3 on a road trip. It demonstrated that the car would be suitable for taking the 800 mile trip between my house and my parents' house with only 2 hours worth of charge time. Oddly, Tesla doesn't allow you to plan routes on their web site with this trim level - I'm sure in the car itself you can do this, so I'm not sure why they won't allow this on their website. I'm thinking that they want to encourage up-sale of the larger pack even if it might not be necessary for most users. In addition to being cheaper, I like the idea that the 50 KWH pack will more quickly recover the footprint it takes to manufacture. It's great to see that the planner will work right in the car's built in screen, thanks for the demo! I assume it will work about the same in the Model 3 SR+.
I’m confused...how is this different from Tesla’s navigation? I’m getting the standard range
Tesla hasn't updated for Standard Range Model 3; Use Model X standard range for a close estimation.

Larry Harris got an email from them saying it will be updated within 10 days. Updates happen all the time without updating their site.

Does A Better Route Planner work with Navigate on Autopilot?
You send the address of the supercharger to the Tesla and the Tesla’s navigation takes over
@@keco185 So for my trip with 6 Chargers I manually enter each as a separate trip for Autopilot. That seems like a lot of extra work compared to just using the built-in Tesla app and enjoying the ride. I have used both and for planning using a better route planner does allow a better over view and does allow me to make changes. But when it comes to making the actual trip I go back to the built-in app and just skip or add super chargers as I go and the built in app makes the adjustments as I drive.
Ken Richins there’s a button on ABRP that automatically sends the next address to the Tesla
so in waterbury they only want to charge the car 19% and have you arrive in NY with only 10% battery. thats cutting it too close for me.
I Agree, but... Those are parameters you can set when planning. Zac set the min arrival charge to 10% both for destination and superchargers. You can change that and re-plan your route. And why use ABRP over the built in planners? I can think of one big reason.... You can do it on your laptop/desktop at home or wherever, save it, and then load it in your Tesla. Also, those are minimum times based on your minimum %. You can always stay longer, get another bottle of water, and let it charge some more. Also, I don't think ABRP knows the status of the charger, how busy it is, and if it is on-line. But you have the freedom to switch between the two. As you are driving.
I went out of town this week requiring me to supercharge for only the second time in 9 months. I wasn’t comfortable only charging what if told me I needed to complete trip. The estimate was within 1-2% each time so I could have trusted it. I guess that will come with time and more road trips.

Michael Schneider that is why I charged 25% more than it recommended. Next time I may try slightly less.
@@magarity12 if it were me and i was at a fast charger and it was truly fast charging and wasnt taking long to charge i would fully charge, i wouldnt risk it.

How how did you download the app on your Tesla? It won't load on my Tesla Google tells me it's not a secure server - don't know what that means.
This seems to be one of the few reasons why it might be worthwhile to get the premium connectivity.

Yeah I've rented a Model S and overnight test drove a Model X. Between the two of them I drove about 2500 miles using super chargers and thought the system Tesla has in place is pretty flawless, other than not letting you pick a destination on the way. I wonder what makes ABRP better and more convenient than what is just built in already.
Side note - Less than a month "til I get to try a Model 3 for a week!
It does precisely this, and quite accurately too from my experience. I've seen nothing in this video to suggest the app is better than Tesla's sat nav for in-car use. Maybe for planning back home, it's nice, but Tesla has a website for that too. This is a paid promotion and should be looked at accordingly in my opinion.

I used abetterrouteplanner.com (ABR)and the built in navigation system on a 2,200 mile trip and a 1,100 mile trip. Tesla’s system minimizes the charging stops versus ABR minimizes drive time. For example, ABR told me that I could stop twice for 15 minutes each totaling 30 minutes instead of stopping once for 65 minutes potentially saving you time. Tesla’s system should provide an option for us to select “minimize drive time”. ABR allows you to look at your charging options easier than in the car.
It does most of that. I guess the major difference is all those settings you can choose. The regular Tesla Nav does the how long you need to be at each Supercharger and the graph of battery usage over the trip too

My major concern about ABRP is that they do not have a setting for the "oddball" Model 3 performance NON performance upgrade package cars. Kinda sucks when that is the car I drive, and ABRP cannot calculate properly for my aero wheels with the performance motors. thumbs down.

It’s all very impressive and sophisticated but at the end of the day on a long trip you stop at a charger when your fuel is low. You don’t need all singing all dancing, just common sense.
The Man of Mead This will make trip more efficient. So miss chargers and tell you how much you need to charge to get from A to B quickest. Also, sometimes, the superchargers are spread out, so picking right one is important. Like your in car planner, but people think it is more accurate.

David L I guess and I did see that one stop was scheduled for only 20 minutes for some reason. But IMO cutting it that close just to save minutes is a ridiculous way to plan a route no matter who does it. It doesn't take very many unforeseen circumstances to eat up 10%.

Why in the world would you go through all that in the U.S. if you are interested in stopping only at Tesla superchargers? There is no problem changing routes or destinations on the fly with Tesla's native planner. And I suspect (without knowing) that Tesla's supercharger status info is more current. This really ain't rocket science. Why add another layer of complexity that gets you the same result?
ABRP takes more variables into account, including speed and ambient temperature, neither of which the Tesla app considers directly. As others have said, it is extremely useful in advance of a trip, too. You can try out different scenarios at your desk before you go, giving yourself a better idea of travel times and charging options.
I was thinking the same thing. I guess if you really have the time and want to geek out. Tesla navigation is simple and it's always ready to go.

Roots grow under trees. A Route (as in out), is a track on a map. Maybe it is just an east coast thing like saying "tuna fish" rather than tuna. Who ever heard of a trout fish? How can I use anything where the name is mis-pronounced?
