- EPISODE 4: Milkweed & Cattail Flour
Location: Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
The milkweed plant is the natural life-sustaining domain of the monarch butterfly larvae who choose this wildflower as the only species to develop and grow upon. Sustainably harvested it also represents a wonderful broccoli like vegetable for Chef Paul Rogalski to experiment with. A short walk from expert forager Les Stroud’s own cottage, on the edge of the local gravel pit a prolific bounty awaits for our wild harvesters.
Directed by Les Stroud, Kevin Kossowan
Starring Les Stroud, Paul Rogalski - Розваги
I hate that more people don’t appreciate these kind of videos. Production quality and character quality. What more can you ask for?
Haters going to hate just move on.
I agree this guy is great someday we're going to need skills like this and I'm not joking the world is definitely going to hell real quick
Not to be overly optimistic, but I think more will one day. Just like with most things the masses don't agree with, it takes time. Because, there's just no way to these presentations and not feel some type of urge to protect these habitats.
Don't trip too much bro. The fact we're dialoguing in a space like this about this very specific topic shows progress is happening. 🖤
We're here that's what matters 🙌✨
Don't hate them...pity them
Absolutely enjoy everything you produce Les! Please never stop !
I absolutely love this show. So damn calming and Chef Paul is such a likeable and passionate character. Amazing show
Paul is definitely a neat human being, and when I say “neat” I definitely don’t mean it in a childish way. More of a unique person that I wish I had more of in my life. Great comment my friend 👍
There is something mesmerizing about Les wading through leech infested waters to collect wild edible plants. I wish I could spend a day in the bush with Les learning about this stuff.
Les' explanation of monarch butterflies migrating south to Florida in generations and then returning to the same field where the first generation began was so moving. A sense of home and everything it means to us isnt just a place on a map. It's in our DNA. Thanks for sharing that Les.
"Take one, leave one" is a SUPER important lesson in respect
This is my new favorite show and its so chill to see les just get to relax and be happy on camera with no stress
This was incredible . Been watching les since I was 10 years old
I love these videos! My girlfriend and I watch them to fall asleep it’s so calming.
Les nothing but respect
Les going full survivorman mode for those flowers!
Thank you Les for this wonderful serie. Whenever I feel down or had a bad day I come around and watch these videos which combine two of my favourite things: nature & cooking and with that passion and calm atmosphere it's just like balm for my soul.
👍👍👍
Paul your the man when it comes to the kitchen💯💯💯
Hey Stroud, I wanna say something I hope resonates with you from my heart to yours.
I’m not sure why you get all these trolls and ignorant minded people but for someone like me who has seen you on TV from a young age to finding you when now I am a little older and wiser(23) your YT channel and being able to connect and see how opened minded, skillful, intelligent and appreciative of your ability to articulate your story’s and adventures into videos for us to learn and enjoy is something I and i’m sure many many more people can never take for granted. the amount of time from your life energy you’ve put into these beautiful videos for us.
Please never falter from being the divine spark you are for us. You are truly an inspirational mentor for me not just in your survival aspects.
I wish you a happy, healthy and higher minded new era.
This might be one of my favorite shows by Les. Such an appreciation for wild edibles, and beautifully produced.
I love Survivorman and YES I am passionate about wild plants and mushrooms!
Les does it again. What an incredible show that you can take sooooooo much from. Les is the real deal👊🏾👊🏾💪🏾
What the hell Les. This is the best thing I’ve ever seen.
Les is the best , all his content should be tuaght in all forms of schools.
Some of the best content ever uploaded to youtube. Commenting for the algo
There's not much to say other than wow. Just excellent work. Thank you 😊
This show you've created is so enjoyable with a standard we have come to expect from you. The culinary skill is another level and beautiful to watch the entire process.
What a fabulous video Les 👍👍🙏👍
You really have been a favorite since childhood thank you les
Who else gives a thumb up before the video even starts!
Super video as always ..I like it so much !
I love this series
Brilliant bravo absolutely brilliant
I really missed your videos Les over the past couple of years... you offer such a creative, dynamic perspective too life. I believe nature is a huge fundamental need for the spirit and soul. Oh, how I want to escape Toronto, these videos definitely can create that for 25 mins.
this show is unbelievable. is watching it on youtube the best way to support it? as someone who loves your content as well as cooking, this might be my favorite content you’ve ever produced.
I made a point to go to his website and order the DVD set. I wanted to pay *him*, and not pay him through UA-cam.
@@nevyen149 are you referencing the dvd set of Wild Harvest? or just one of his other shows? i didn’t see WH on his site
@@damnfinecoffee224 I got the big set. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the wild harvest series, but it still felt like a better way to pay him rather than watch Survivorman episodes on UA-cam.
Also got a "Les" bobblehead I didn't know I needed until I saw it.
@@nevyen149 lmao
it's very interesting to know plants and how to use them and Les explain this very well. Plus, chef Paul gives very good ideas for meals, very well done
I have been a fan of Les since Survivor man aired on Discovery and this man has such passion for nature I wish I could muster a fraction of this much passion for nature.
Episode 3 & 4 were fantastic ! It's a beautiful journey, thank you
I am so happy that you made this series. I’ve wanted to
Learn this so much.
Fantastic. Such a great motivator, to get out and harvest.
This is what I've been waiting for ❤️
Hi Les, just thought I'd make a suggestion - You might want to look into getting a verification badge (check mark) for your channel, that way if people see your videos in their recomendations, they'll know it's official content uploaded by you. Ngl, when I first found your videos, I feared they might be unofficial re-uploads. Thankfully that wasn't the case, but getting verified would help dispel any doubts. Love your shows, thanks for uploading all this cool stuff
This is HIS official UA-cam channel
@@missbackwoods But some people might not know that and they might think he is a fan reuploading some episodes. But if he gets verified people will know that is him, or they can just look at his vids and find out of course.
@@letaxes it says its his official account on the ABOUT page on here.
@@missbackwoods Anyone can say that. Being officially verified is something more. OP is right. Whatever the case, all respect to Les. He'll take care of these things when he has time.
@@missbackwoods Like talking to a wall..
not what i would call a cottage, to me a cottage is a small dark house with a tiny garden and a thatched roof, what les has is stunning, i could live there 24/7 here in the uk we have nothing like that really. beautiful video was captivated the whole time had my full attention. Also the camera work was fantastic. you two work great together. i love how paul shares the enthusiasm les has for the outdoors and takes something natural and creates something incredible which could sell for 100 of pounds in a 5 star restraunt.
Being a cottager has a double meaning in the UK... Anyway, love the show Les. It has inspired me to learn more about the plants in the local.
This series is amazing, I've always been a big fan of Les, glad he's using his experiences and knowledge to teach us ways to make us appreciate nature more.
I like your themed series Les. Always well done and very interesting
I'm loving this series so far! Today I discovered that my garden is full of wood sorrel, I honestly though it was just clover. But when I saw these little yellow flowers I knew I saw some of those in the backyard!
Thank you for continuing to put out such good content. I'm really enjoying this and learning a lot by watching you guys!
"Yellow"? Maybe purple or red, but they are usually white. BE SURE!
@@survivalgal1882 Yes, yellow. They're very common.
Are the leaves heart-shaped and do they tend to close in rain?
@@chiren998 Yes, I know it's "common", but there are over 500 types of wood sorrel. Finally had the time, and presence of mind, to check... the particular species of wood sorrel you may have is Oxalis stricta.
Really starting to enjoy these video.
The cinematography is beautiful.
Btw Les...love the shirt
This has become my favorite series to watch. Les Stroud, the outdoors, awesome natural food, I'm hooked. I love this show.
Deserves so many more views.
This was awesome. Reminds me of some local programming in northern Minnesota where they use local ingredients to make awesome looking food like this. That Moose with Chimichurri looked so good
Hey Les , & paul I love your videos Les anyway & this new collaboration with Chef Paul is brilliant I'd love to visit Canada 🇨🇦from the UK 🇬🇧 , both at their finest in the Summer glow right now x
I love this series. And I absolutely LOVE the soundtrack. Thank you so much for creating this.
Omg Les, your knowledge combined with chef Paul's, Wow 🤠
So interesting to see how these local ingredients grow and can be used! And if nothing else, I can recognize the yellow wood sorrel simply by Les pointing it out so many times!
This has very rapidly become my new favorite series. I look forward to your next episode! Thank you for making these.
this is so inspiring guys, thank you for these series!
Les, Paul, Kevin, thank you so much for presenting this series.
This is like a passionately crafted love letter to our surroundings. Each of you brings immeasurable skills, complimentary to the other’s.
Every week I eagerly await the next instalment. Then, I watch it with a tear in my eye because the stunning beauty and amazing story that you are both telling.
Thank you and thank you to the team that brings this to us.
I love this content! ❤️❤️
Great video.
Delightful !!! Thank You!
Great series, Les. Keep it up.
Muskoka is one of the most beautiful places anywhere. From Bracebridge to Port Carling to Skeleton Lake. This is amazing. I'm from Michigan, but always used to go there in summer's at a family cottage that was around since the 60s. I always felt Canadian in the summer, and looked for forward to the 7.5 hour journey to the cottage. It is a special place to me. This was interesting.
I think these 2 just had a wonderful date and I think les is about to get lucky.
Jk love the show.
Nah nah nah, those cattails were way past! That bannock must've had a texture like sawdust. Notice they didn't comment on it! 🙂
Cattail pollen is brilliant yellow and so thick that you can't even wiggle the spears without getting covered in powder. I bake it into pancakes, biscuits or pot pie topping. It tastes like corn, and like something else again. My family loves it. Highly recommended.
That said, great episode and I'm enjoying this series, thank you Les! Bon appetit everyone!
Well done! The footage, the edit, the content, and narration...masterful. You are a real pro. Modern media renaissance man extraordinaire. This project really showcases your experience.
I seen a little bit of Survival Man come out in this episode. loved it. :)
I like your shirt, Les
This was my favorite episode so far Les. Fantastic job. I love walking milkweed fields in summer to photography butterflies, but I never knew the plants had such potential as food for us!
Amazing foods
Let’s go💯💯💯ALWAYS WAITING FOR THESE NEW VIDEOS💯💯💯
Your channel is full of so much good quality content.
Les my friend Awesome!! Thank you for Sharing With us All:)) Love Watching your Channel your One of a Kind.
This is the best and most informative plant identification show I've ever seen and has such an easy going vibe! Thank you Les and Paul for all that you do!
Just got done cutting grass just to see a new episode of Wild Harvest. Heck yah 🍻
I love this show. Just on the Monarchs though, they mainly overwinter each year in a specific location in Mexico, not Florida. The ones that are born in the late summer in Ontario will fly all the way to Mexico themselves and hibernate in winter. The generational trip of Monarchs is only done on the northwards direction the next year. All the best Les and Paul!
When you do another survivorman, you have to bring Paul with you.
I absolutely love this! Thank you again Les!
That seem like it was very tasty I wouldn't have mine sitting that on that dinner wow it made me hungry just watching it...👍
Love the show!! Just a pt of clarification for Les, I believe the monarchs migrate completely on the southern journey. It is the return migration that takes multiple generations. Also, monarchs use many milkweed species as their host plant, not jusy A.syrica common milkweed...
I really enjoyed your videos Les Paul is a great chief nature can provided more healthy way of living tysm
Love the concept!
Thanks Les. I've really wanted someone to come out with this type of outdoors show. I spend a ton of time in the wilderness and I'm a chef also so really enjoy your work!!!
I love to forage it’s my passion
Hello from Maine awesome job thanks
Really good episode this one.
Me and my family have always called Yellow wood Sorrel “yummies”. So many of my friends thought I was a weirdo for just picking some and eating it. Delicious , and in big clumps, the flower is PACKED with flavor
Les, Chef Paul, Excellent just excellent!...ATB
Very cool! I enjoyed this. Hoping for more soon !👍🏼
Love this, thank you!
I could watch many more. Nobody does it like Les, 👍.
Les, please, please get together with the chefs and make a cookbook so we can try these recipes at home
Thank you!
This is a big episode
very relaxing and relatable
24:40 sounds like Michael Scott lol live the videos man!
Hi Stroud, hi everybody such a laid back show really been enoying them so relaxing
I love this stuff
great stuff man!
Beautifully done video Les and Paul so full of nature and goodness. The video, the intro and the music are perfection. And as always I learned a thing or two.
Amazingly done. Approach Netflix with season 2. I've seen the 'Chef's Table' series where amazing chefs are showcased - 1 of which uses natural ingredients from largely unknown sources in the Amazon and mountains in Peru. The chef here in this series is also amazing, but this is about the ingredients and the habitat. What I get from this series is, that there is abundance all around us in Canada, (and elsewhere) and that with some chef know-how and teaching, we all can benefit from the prosperity of the local Wild Harvest. Great job thinking up this series. Keep it up. Would love to see way more episodes... especially in Ontario at different seasons. Although you're very well versed, I'd love to see a collab with the channel One Wildcrafter. They are a couple that did a year alone with only wild food - not a comparison with your year in Wabakimi... worth a look for more wild edibles in Ontario for this series I hope! Again great series, looking forward to all the episodes... especially those from Ontario.
Way to go wes with Sasquatch chronicles! Love the tshirt.
This is a great series, you two!
Paul, your creations... absolutely amazing!
Amazing episode! Hello from Montana!
What a beautiful and informative video! Thank you Les :)
This stuff is amazing.
