After digging through this Flood Salvage Dodge Viper's Engine Bay, we moved to the interior and diagnosed it's electrical system, where we finally found what has been standing in our way since day one.

The only car channel youtuber left with over a million subs & no lift is truly an accomplishment
Yeah Sam. INSTALL YOUR FREAKING LIFT! Didn't Benpac give him one?
B Is For Build doesn't have a lift.
Chris fix

Clean the board with isopropyl alcohol. Then clean the contacts. Board components are generally waterproof.
Invest in an ultrasonic cleaner too. Great for complex parts and boards.
That board is fried, those chips, transistors most likely are shorted, at this point better to get a new/used board, because even if you fix the board, no guarantee how long it will last..
@@user-kr8tp3ko8z agreed, but if he gets it working:
1. He knows whether the engine can be saved
2. He doesn't have to spend money on parts that may/may not work anyways
@@user-kr8tp3ko8z Still worth a try
It depends. If it was not conformal coated when it was manufactured, then it will not be waterproof. The corrosion will have damaged the components where they solder to the PCB and the corrosion will be causing shorts and open circuits all over the place. This thing has sat for months with water in those modules, it will be hard to fix them.
@@42222 I won't trust this thing anymore, since if he is right (I don't know) all the communication of the car is relying on this module. Just not worth it.
The modules communicate to each other thru canbus, which is basically a wire connecting to each module. A corroded connector would be the first thing I'd look at, at the body control module. Seeing as how the body module still reads on your diagnostic, check the wire out that goes to the engine computer.
Agreed, can bus runs on a pair of wires and can be easily checked.
Yeah you'd think that, just fixed a dodge charger that wasn't shifting, had other random issues. Attempted replacing all modules, no change, swapped the bcm and it works now. Common issue. My canbus was fine. And I could still bread the module, just had some issues
A brand new BCM from Dodge is about $250. Part# 4865524AL. That's what I would try first. It may work without programming. I thought mileage was stored on the BCM, but according to the manual it's actually in the PCM. So the BCM should not need to be programmed:
"If the PCM is replaced, update the mileage and vehicle identification number (VIN) in the new PCM." If you end up having to replace the PCM, your Launch tool should be able to write mileage and the VIN into the new one.
Also, don't forget these cars have something called ASD "auto shutdown relay". This may be your next issue. Now a blown ASD relay will not prevent the engine from cranking, according to the service manual. If you want a copy of the service manual, I will gladly email it to you. It's about 1,800 pages.
Here's how the PCM and ASD are supposed to work:
"The Auto Shutdown (ASD) and fuel pump relays are mounted externally, but turned on and off by the PCM.
The crankshaft position sensor signal is sent to the PCM. If the PCM does not receive the signal within approximately one second of engine cranking, it deactivates the ASD relay and fuel pump relay. When these relays deactivate, power is shut off the fuel injectors, ignition coils, heating element in the upstream oxygen sensors, hydraulic fan solenoid and the fuel pump."
To answer your question about the PCM having to communicate through the BCM here's what it says:
"The Body Control Module (BCM) supplies vehicle occupants with visual and audible information and controls various vehicle functions. To provide and receive information, the BCM is interfaced to the vehicle’s serial bus communications network, referred to as the Programmable Communications Interface(PCI) data bus.
This network consists of the;
• Audio system equipped with RBQ radio.
• Controller Antilock Brake (CAB)
• Electro Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC)
• HVAC Control Module
• Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC)
• Powertrain Control Module (PCM)"
Now that's not a very definitive explanation, but clearly your BCM is water damaged. For the cost of a replacement, it's worth just getting a new one and trying it out. You could try your luck with a used minivan BCM or something off eBay, but you never know what condition a used one will be in.
That's just ton of straight to the point info. Great job. 👏
damn, hope he sees all these
I saw it. Thanks much!!!
Thank you very much Viper Mike. If you wouldn't mind emailing it to me its Samcracauto@gmail.com. Thanks!
@@Samcrac I just set it to you as well.
Yes bro, just upload whatever projects You're working on, nobody cares if they are in order or not but it sucks barely getting any videos from you and when we do lately they are very unsatisfying, come on brother, we love you, we need more!!!
Funny I was thinking the same thing, his content has been real weak lately almost like he doesn’t even want to do it anymore 🤷🏻♂️
Going there Sam, this series is getting interesting, can't wait to see it running.
Really appreciating the Viper content on your channel, Thank you Sam!
When it comes to electronics it's always better to research before spending the money to swap parts and if it's even worth it. If wiring harness is fried you'll never see the light of day and blow up new modules trying to plug them in. Don't starve yourself of content backlog keep moving on your projects are always challenging.
Just buy the minivan bcm
It’s not his car.
It’s ok, show more videos. We like all the cars you work on. Keep them coming.
Keep the videos coming with other builds while you wait on the repairs Sam.
My assembly line at work handles a couple dozen sunroof ECUs. They all have the same footprint and fit into the same motor housing and while there are only 4 different PCBs, the software written to each is different between vehicles.
The Caravan BCM is probably a completely different PCB inside the same housing. Even if it's the same PCB, it'll be different software.
dodge also made the engine bay fuse box as a T.I.P.M. (totally integrated power module ) and can cause significant drivability issues
Gotta have it green, love the luminescent pearl finish in that Colour. Second choice would be the orange. 👍
I was thinking Orange all the way....
Love the content Sam keep it up!
Move forward with other builds while we wait. Always fun watching the forensic tear down.
I love the viper videos and I love the updates keep them coming
Always wanted viper! Look forward to it running ! Happy to see another car being built while waiting for parts
Looks like good progress to me, I'm sure the viper will start... You might be surprised to hear the engine running smoothly.
i had the same problem with a pick up truck it went in the boat ramp... after all the usual drainings, usually only oil i rinse everything with fresh water,... but it would not start... it would spin over ,i soaked the ecm in alcohol then put it under the hood of my limo while it was running.. limo was my service vehicle... with the ac running under the hood was over 240 degrees. so i put the computer on the engine for an hour.. put it in the truck afterwards and started up like nothing was ever wrong.. later the ac/ started working then the radio too... fresh water rinse is the best... true story!!!! good luck all!!!
Watching Samcrac is like witnessing an ambidextrous, procrastinating octopus that had too much Red Bull.
could also be the simple thing: neutral or clutch sending switch.
What I'd do is put it in neutral, run power to the starter and manually kick it over. If it doesn't turn over or sounds like a box of gravel then no use wasting any more time if the engine is shot.
Just made a similar comment. The PCM needs to see very few things to actually turn the engine over, one of which is the completed clutch and/or neutral safety circuit. In a manual car, the clutch is the primary controller of the entire circuit. Since that area of his car is damaged, he may simply not be hitting the safety switch. Otherwise, the starter was definitely an issue.
No this makes too much sense
You should be able to see the pids in the scan tool and see if the car is seeing what it needs to disable the starter interlock.
The problem is that there is still enough crud in the engine and cylinders to at a minimum blow out the rings on an attempt to restart it. The engine needs to be taken completely apart before more damage is done to it.
@@plektosgaming Nah it'll be fine. Whatever damage there is is already done. My only concern is if there is more sand to be sucked in somewhere. I'd be interested to see a compression test after running. I'm betting mostly fine.
20 part series incoming
NOOOOO
Always great to see variety of cars while likely waiting on parts on the viper or any cars your working on
Yes, kept us updated! Interesting!
I want to see what you're going to do with that V10 TDI Touareg.
Cry uncontrollably? #touaregclub
Uhhhh....nothing will be done? It takes him 3 weeks to get out a video of him not getting the Viper running.
Tow a 747…
Save time and heartache. Just give it your bank routing and account number. That's what it really wants 😅
I'd suggest getting a replacement BCM from a wrecker. They're fairly inexpensive
Show us the viper running PLEASE i have been waiting for to long.
Finally... the video we have been waiting for. Keep em coming Sam!
No problem with starting another car. It only gets infuriating when some UA-camrs never return back to the problem car so the viewer never gets closure!
I love this guy...he's honest ,straightforward, knows what he's doing (some times)..some good jokes, I mean that's good content
Love the builds like this. We want to see more if firm finished and not just left like the Ferrari.
new stuff while were waiting. keep up the good work
You can say I binged all of the videos in this series, can't wait for the next one to see if you get it started.
Who would have ever figured an electronic component would be damaged from the water...
Don't you know electricity is waterproof.
Stick with the Mustang's original color. never change colors, unless it's a complete-bolt-by-bolt teardown. A color change may look good from a few feet, but the door jams engine bay, etc. always look terrible when they don't match. (Plus, masking is much easier when matching colors vs. completely changing them.)
All the jams have been sanded and the panels were removed from the car.
He said the door jams will be painted
Kona blue... i have it on my 2011 .The way the color shifts from blue to purple depending on the light is awesome.
You have my eyes wide open with that tdi you have. Can't wait to see a video on that one.
I'd say the BCM is still good use a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol and clean it up real good and let it dry well, reinstall BCM. Next since the clutch is all busted up your no-start condition is probably being caused by the clutch safety switch not being engaged. I'd put the ACDelco OEM starter motor replacement on the car, activate or bypass the clutch safety switch and crank that Viper over and listen to those ponys sing.
Nope
really? over two weeks since your last video and it's only 17 minutes long. I need more. come on.
That's what I like about Hoovie every few days he has video and projects are constantly getting completed.
More videos are always wanted Sam
Sam, we watch the videos for your charming personality. The cars are simply props. The more videos the better 😎
Show the new stuff Sam and with your mom
She's too busy doing 10 Black guys at a time.
Hey Sam!
The mustang should totally be Deep Impact Blue! I'll never understand why Ford discontinued this color!
Love your channel Sam, great going on the viper
Keep up the good work, Sam!
I would go straight to the starter and get the engine spinning over and get some oil moving around the longer you wait the more rust build up
So are we actually ever gonna get a start up video versus you just talking the whole video about the issue 9x over?
Tripped me the fuck o ur
That's his bread and butter leading you on knowing dam well what the problem is. It's all rigged it's the equivalent to watching those car/drama TV shows not to mention the clickbait
Oh, hi! You must be new around here. Welcome! 😀
I just come to read the comments because they tell exactly what I knows gonna happen like just now another lead on I bet. I just leave a thumbs down and don't give a second of view time. And what do you know it's him in another account trying to defend himself 🤣
@@Villa125 didnt want to comment but I do the same.
I have a rag top 2014 GT in Gotta Have It Green and its such a cool color. looks green in shade but has all these gold highlights in the sun....
You can definitely use a used BCM & PCM if necessary after they have been flashed and reprogrammed. I wouldn’t use a different part number control module as it may not be designed to work with that vehicle; it’s functions may be limited.
Rich would have completed it by now, 😆🤣😂😹
I mean he's done his electric c4 ..... hasn't he?????
Last night i was attempting to replace a rear wheel speed sensor in my friends Chrysler town and country. In a DECENTLY DESIGNED CAR you would take off the wheel unbolt the speed sensor and put the new one in, technically it should take as long to take the wheel and tire off as it would to replace the sensor. On the 2012 town country you have to take off heel, the brake caliper and the backing plate to GET to the wheel speed sensor. What a piece of total crap….i would NEVER OWN CHRYSLER PRODUCT……thanks i feel better now!
Yes I'd definitely watch other car stuff while waiting for this Viper project!
Sam, I have no issues seeing you start another build. I understand that in today's messed up shipping world that parts take time to get. So it only makes sense to have a few builds in progress. That way we can keep getting new content.
Way too many videos on this car. It becomes so watered down when you drag this out so long. Basically looks like you don’t want to work much.
When it comes time to trying new or used boards, you may be able to bypass the clutch switch (youll obviously need a wiring diagram.)
Sam - Keep going - you will get there and we will enjoy
This has turned out to be quite an interesting series, if nothing else other than an exploratory look at why diagnosing CAN BUS issues can be such a nightmare. Feel free to show some other stuff as well though.
Yes Sam, other vids whilst waiting for Viper parts is greeeeeat!!!!
car computer exchange in cary nc is who i use , ive used them for several of my mopar jeeps, all the ECU have the 4 plugs with a different color ring that goes to each harness normally they sell you one and you send yours as a core but one time they did not have mine in the correct year so they repaired mine
Look forward to an update on the Viper!
It's cool if you take your time with the modules on the viper. It's allllll good Sammy!
Love the videos can't wait to see the next one 🕜🕜😂😂🤠
Great video, I don't see a problem on seeing the new cars while waiting for the viper resolution
Man, I LOVE these builds, love your commentary, you make it all look possible(just not the money part to buy these cars lol)
Go for it Sam, you're the one doing all the work, were just along for the ride.
It's been a month and we're basically where you started 🙂 I'm a huge Mopar fan but I say new to you cars . And maybe in 2024 you get it started you can bring us 🔙 😗
Some many projects in progress Sam!
I have never wanted a mustang, but those years of boss 302 with the got to have it green is one of my dream toys
Mustang in Grabber Blue!!! Thank You for the Videos
Love this guys content
I watch Sam do all this magic with cars -- even if he fails sometimes -- and here I am just topping off my power steering fluid twice a week. But my friends need help installing Windows updates, and here I am, hacking firmware for fun, so I feel a little better. Kudos to anyone who can work on cars and do it properly!
I bought a Volvo V50 Diesel and it had a intermittent starting fault , the dash display would go crazy then stop and start.. I took it too the dealership they replaced the ignition barrel, still the same... A friend of mine mentioned the on the the main ECUs was behind the passenger side front wheel, dropped the wheel and liner and the housing was there opened it and the ECU was literally flooded.. I managed to save it cleaned the circuit board and it worked perfect.
Check engine light coming on with key in pos 2 means the ECU is getting power and going through some of the initialization. It's a good sign.
While some repair manuals state that you can check if a ECU is working when the light is coming on, I had failed ECUs both with the check engine light on and off, though.
Those newer style JTEC PCM computers are much easier to fix than the older ones. That could be fixed by someone with experience so if you need to swap it there should be plenty of repair places online. Dealt with one in Florida several times and they never let me down.
Its funny how the reason why i started to watch your channel was because of the green car. Now it feels like years since you been working on that car
Got to have it green is the way to go. That color is awesome. I have a good friend who had a convertible in that color. Wow is all I can say.
Keep them coming!!
Bring on the new cars good Sir 👍 Not your fault that parts are hard to come by these days. We love your channel
Clean up the BCM board. Start with soap and water (yes you can use tap water) and scrub lightly with a toothbrush and then rinse the entire thing with isopropyl alcohol until there is no sand or debris left. Once its completely dry, reassemble and try again. You might find that the module works fine and the wiring harness has a break somewhere. ;)
More videos Sam!!! That is my vote.
You would think a specialty junk yard would have 100’s of wrecked Viper’s? Parts should be easy to find? This has been the Best series!!! Absolutely love the story and the original pics of what happened!!! Go Sam!!!!
Oh Sam. We just wanna see you futz around with cars. Any car will do. Of course we want other cars while we wait for parts! 😊👍👍
Hi guys no worries 👍 your the best take your time m8 it be more video's to watch..... take care
For the Mustang, go with the green, andnsad seeing all the Viper issues, hope its able to be fixed in the end
I would try the BCM or Pcm out of a similar dodge pickup truck they both share a motor and transmission. So obviously they should share similar electronics.
Once I accidentally spilled a drink over my MacBook. It behaved strangely after that, bluetooth didn't work, a sensor reading was way off, the overall performance was very bad. I was able to clean the pcbs inside with special pcb cleaner spray and a toothbrush. That solved the problem permanently.
If I were you, I'd give it a try and clean the BCM with a pcb cleaner and a toothbrush.
More car content is always welcome. 👍👍 and Orange on the stang.
I believe The business Elliott Alvis' family is in (where he makes his UA-cam videos) is cleaning and repairing circuit boards / Aviation electronics. I think I saw that when they cleaned up some stuff for Watch JR Go.
go with that got to have it green I love the color and I really love the name of it that's the one I think you should go with but it's completely up to you overall
Check the cab bus wire first that might be corroded and also get a ultrasonic cleaner or find somewhere that will run the board through a ultrasonic cleaner for you, the boards are usually waterproof and will clean up nicely.
Good luck with it!!
Sam as a Auto Damage Appraiser In Boston /more than 40 years experience [including flood damaged cars , Modules {LKQ} [used] serial#'s must be the same {i do not know of any reprograming that works. ECU's can sometimes be dried out @ a heat source {slowly}, once opened up .Spray Contact cleaner also helps . I like to coat all plugs / high delectic grease & also find disassembling starters & using WD 40 first then Contact
cleaner. Finally The car will never start till The clutch is secured so the lockout switch will work & The Engine will start! Good Luck!!
Hi Sam, try CRC Quickcleen and a toothbrush on the BCM I've used it on freshwater damaged Canon DSLR's with great result... It's important to check everything super carefully so there in no corrosion left then =) Happy Fixing and a cool channel...
"Pull Me Over Red" (AKA - Auto Auction Rebuilds) LOL
Also super knowledgeable knowledgeable thank you 🙏
The ECM probably shares a CAN signal with the BCM. If any corrosion, it will interrupt the signal and not let them talk to each other. The bcm has to communicate the cab functions to the ECM. Not sure exactly how this system is wired, but confirm your CAN continuity and voltages between the modules
We wash PCB assemblies all the time. Use a bit of non caustic liquid detergent and a soft brush and give it a good scrubbing. Then clean with distilled water a few times. Let it dry somewhere warm for a few days. Any corrosion between leads or eaten off leads of ic’s will need repairs or further scrubbing with solvent alcohol for instance. Then try it again. Likely it works
Manscaped ad - "I'm sure that you can tell that I'm really excited...."
The show must go on lol all good Sam just upload what you cant that works for you.
Love the viper!!! thanks
LOL this dude put those forged vossens from the Aston on the clapped out mustang HAHA I love you Samcrac
Yeah Sam let’s see some new stuff 👍🏻
