A lot of mechanics would have just replaced the head gasket then told her she also needed to replace the radiator. You seem like a genuinely good and kind person
I would think crooked ones would quote/charge for a head gasket job, replace the radiator, and skate away with the money.

I've been a mechanic almost 50 years. It's nice to see an honest one who knows what he's doing. There's a lot of idiots out there who wouldn't know a bad head gasket from a leaking water pump. Nice job.

WOW, top bloke. A lot of mechanics would have charged her for a head gasket and then put some radiator stop leak in it. Especially female clients. It's so good to see in this day an age good honest work ethics.

Gave my daughter a 4 runner that started using coolant. Mechanic said it was a cracked head. I started checking and found An oil cooler on passenger side of motor that only needed a gasket! Saved 6500 he had quoted!
Hard to see a cracked head without removing it, unless it's badly cracked on the outside.

This excellent mechanic proves that there are still honest good people who do a great job and don’t overcharge customers.
Woo no big teardowns. A customer of ours had us install a leather kit and door lock actuators on a 99 F250 7.3 Powerstroke. We got it done and ready to pickup, when the fuse that supplies power to the pedal popped. The potentiometer had shorted out. Took me a hour or so with a scan tool and the customer running around looking for the part that went bad. We did not charge him for that diagnosis or to put the parts on.
You are a gentlemen sir. Honorable mechanic is a beautiful thing when you find one.

i worked as a carpenter and remodeler for decades at very wealthy peoples houses on bainbridge inland wash.
during a conversation with one of my clients , she told me the reason she and her friends continued to hire me for years was because they trusted me 100 % . your reputation is everything .

nice to see there's honest mechanics still around... about the only other thing I figure he should probably have suggested is replacing the hoses along with the radiator...
I retired and spend my days doing handyman work helping old people. Many would not do the work as they don't have the money. If they have the means I charge $25/hr. No travel time and I round down most days. Keeps me busy and I love helping people. This man will be blessed for using his skills to help people.

Honesty and a good attitude, That's exactly how you get a lot of repeat customers and build a good reputation as a mechanic. That's hard to find these days in any repair business. Most will screw you over any way they can. Just like the scammer that said she needed a head gasket.

He said it’s easy maybe 45 minutes labor so a honest price and he just gave a flat rate to some guys do the work then surprise you with the bill later taking forever to do the job
He is out of his mind. Wait til he sees what work is necessary for a radiator replacement on that model. Plus, I tend to doubt the radiator even leaks, the 1.8T is notorious for failed thermostat or oil filter stand gasket which is right where he was pointing to.

I am just a shade tree guy, but I run into this stuff all the time. Super sad because as some of the other guys have said, an honest mechanic winds up getting fired because he won't play ball. Pisses me right off. Once had a girl told she needed a new motor. She had like 30k miles. It was a Daewoo, so ...but 30k miles and blow by already? It was burning blue smoke but only at high revs. It was a plugged up crankcase valve. Cost 12 bucks and took me like 30 seconds to pop it in. A local shop wanted to charge her over 3 grand and they probably knew damn good and well what it really was.

I've been a mechanic for 40 yrs now mostly do front end alignments and suspension work. I always bring people out to the car and educate them on what is going on.

I had a place"mistakenly" not connect a coolant line to another last they replaced. Leaked coolant badly for 2 weeks. They refused to admit that's what it was AFTER I took it back and they fixed their mistake. They tried to tell me it was a head gasket issue. 2nd opinion (and the fact it stopped leaking after they connected the hose) showed there was no head gasket issue. Always get a 2nd opinion!
You just pull this off and it comes right out lol I spent 3 hours trying to get my radiator and fans back in , bottom hoses top hoses 25 bolts and 6 lacerations

That's how I do it. Give more than you receive.
I had a mechanic a long time ago who would only charge for the time it would take to repair the car. If the book said 4 hrs, that's what he charged. He never charged for diagnostic time. Of course, this back in the 1980's.
Hope seems much more interesting than the car. Glad to see people who understand that honesty is the best policy. 👌

Why can't more mechanics be honest like this?
When my mother was alive a mechanic told her she needed to spend $800 on electrical work as her car was running rough. I changed the wires and plugs and for less than $100 it ran great. Some people suck some are awesome.

dryer sheets are supposed to be a rodent deterrent. Alot of people place them all around their engine bays when storing vehicles for long periods of time. Does it truly work? I have no idea. But i do it and havent had an issue with chewed wiring

Also, This guy is super nice, I know he doesn’t have the expenses or overhead that a dealership has, but a dealership where I live, charges minimum $175 plus tax just to diagnose this problem, will obviously only use/buy OEM parts and then labor again to re and re this radiator……..end cost being around $750 and up vs this guy literally charging a $100 bucks for all his time, knowledge and travel expenses…..she doesn’t know how lucky she is here.
