    I grew up in an area that became a "rich area" after my parents moved there (they were the first or second house on the street) and my neighbor's dad made literally 10x what my dad did, so while I was scrounging Thrifty and Gemco for $3 Atari 2600 cart liquidations (to play on my refurbished 2600) he got the full monty NES setup (robot, light gun, etc). I also remember his dad had a "cable ready" TV which gave them access to all of the pay cable without paying for it. At that point in time, they didn't scramble pay channels (except the playboy channel) they just stuck them on channels above 13 so that you could only get them with a cable box (the same slider shown in this video). Since the TV could get them without the box, they were free! And yes, they did have a giant pool with a hot tub attached.

    Living near the silicon valley/bay area, I encountered these items from other people. The giant satellite was the first time i encountered it. Kid also had the handheld sega game gear. Pool parties were kids who had money. Sadly, not invited to them. Laser disk, only encounted one person. I forget who had the trampoline, but my parents told me not to go on it. Was tempting. Never had big wheel. I got too big quickly. The electric vehicle, other kids had, but not me. As for those pcs, my dad would collect them when silicon valley would get rid of them during recycle day. Only knew one kid who had the gi joe aircraft carrier. That kid lived in a big house. Great play date since he had a lot of gi joes. Lol. I didn't get star wars toys bc I was worried i would want to collect them all. Lol. I knew kids who had tons. As for clothes, if it was new clothes, it would be on sale. Going early to Mervyn's.

    My family was pretty poor economically but we were rich in family, all of us lived in the same community, from great grandmothers to second cousins. I got to wear OP clothes to high school but that was because my grandmother worked at JC Penney so got a 30% discount (that's why she worked there, to be able to afford good clothes for her grand kids). I laughed when I saw that old brown cable box and the memories of clicking those buttons (clunk, clunk, clunk...). My uncle was the 1st in the family to get cable because he was in his early twenties still living at home so had the disposable income. I used to spend the night at my grandparents on the weekends just so I could watch his TV in his room while he was out on dates. One of my buddies in HS had one of those laser disk players, his dad was in the Air Force and got one when he was stationed in the Philippines real cheap. They had 2 movies for it, Moby Dick and Lawrence of Arabia. Finally when I was in 9th grade I got a computer for christmas, a C-64. It was $300 and came with a disk drive, could hook it up to a TV and used Atari joy sticks. Much cheaper than the $2000+ Apples at the time. It still took both sets of my grandparents to buy it. Hell, I was 23 and still sleeping in my old twin bed before I got a queen size for my birthday and it took most of the family to pool together to get it for me. It was quite embarrassing to be living on 'my own' (I had roommates, see @ArtDocHound's post for details) and still sleeping in the same hand-me-down kid's bed I slept in since elementary school. Oh well, like I said, we were poor but I really didn't know that as a kid because we were rich in family so had more than most in the community because of that.

    My neighbors had a massive basement with a big-screen tv, a wall of VHS, Beta, laserdiscs, and CEDs. And in a sorta separate space was the toy section, filled with every Star Wars, He-Man, GI Joe and Transformers toy/playset. We had illegal cable, and most of my toys came from thrift stores.

    Tina Louise did not have a real problem with the cast, but with Sherwood Schwarz. That's why she would never work on his follow up projects. She started saying more nice things about GI and cast after Schwartz died.

    even im in GenZ category, but i really loves hand painted 70s/80s movie posters, especially my dad bought the original Mad Max (1979) movie that included the poster, when i was a kid seeing that poster, i stare at it for almost every day because of how cool it looks😂

    • @GENXPERIENCE
      @GENXPERIENCE 4 дні тому

      Love to hear that. I know each genernation is their own, and brings something new to the table, but I still love to hear when someone younger does show appreciation to SOMETHING we offered, lol. Some of those posters just can't be beat. That Mad Max one was mysterious and exciting, to be sure.

    Fay was a flawless villain! That blonde overbite was the Achilles heel and her acting shows that she was in no way ready for an kind of heavy lead role. Most of the film the viewer is wondering if she is ever going to be believable at all.

    I know Supergirl was a bad movie. But, before the movie, even, I never liked that the writers added magic to the Superman comic universe.

    Oh no - it wasn't (just) Faye Dunaway. Helen was gorgeous in this film, but she was just so awful otherwise. There was nothing redeeming about this film. Poorly casted, written, and acted, with egregiously bad special effects. Even so, more enjoyable than Batman v Superman.

    E.T. cereal was my absolute favorite! I'd actually get up early on Saturday mornings in order to beat my three older brothers to the box of E.T. cereal! I wish they'd bring it back, even if they rename it something else!

    Man, they did such a tremendous job breathing new life and relevance into the games with all these breakthrough techniques and technologies. But now that they've become standard, what does it mean that the same problems of disinterest are once again building? Where do they go from here? And why have so many Olympics since failed financially, while using the same methods?

    • @GENXPERIENCE

      Good questions, but I will admit that the whole event has kept and even grown some popularity since Beijing (I don't count Covid Tokyo), but you are right about one major point...they still all LOOSE Money...and I just don't know why. Obviously they are not doing it like 84.

    Fun fact that you may not remember: ABC was originally going to cover the 84 Games around the clock, and shelve their daytime lineup (soaps) for 2 weeks. Soap fans got wind of this, and were ticked-so this compromise was reached: 7-9 am GMA 9 am-12 pm Morning coverage 12-1240 pm All My Children 1240-120 pm One Life To Live 120-2 pm General Hospital 2-5 pm Afternoon coverage Loving, Ryan's Hope, and on-the-deathbed Edge of Night WERE shelved

    • @GENXPERIENCE
      @GENXPERIENCE 6 днів тому

      Now that is interesting. If they had shelved the line up, maybe today we would be watching the whole coverage on all day. And I am sure the Soap Stars would not have minded the break. Thank you for this

      @@GENXPERIENCE I bring this up not only for historical purposes, but as a preview of what NBC could do for LA 2028 (the live coverage from Paris now is a dry run, no doubt) Soaps by this point were taped several weeks ahead of time (the last one to be shot live was Edge of Night in 74/75 on CBS-prior to the move to ABC in the fall of 75)

    Supergirl is a failure mainly because Jeannot Szwarc is a terrible director. He's the one who approves the script to direct .Roy Scheider was pointing this out during the filming of Jaws 2. Faye Dunaway is terrible in the movie . Helen Slater😍and Jerry Goldsmith's score nearly saved this misguided mess
