This episode always bugged me. The girl who always stuck by his side says he saved the colony but as Data had previously predicted they were probably not going to believe her. Their superstition could equally have decided that it was the act of killing Data that lifted the curse and being that they simply beamed him out of his tomb with them never being the wiser that he is gone and not actually dead their superstitions could just be reinforced. I can equally come up with other scenarios like if there were hold outs to drinking the water that continued to get sick they might have ascertained that it was in fact what Data put in the water that cured them. However, since it wasn't shown, it's ambiguous and always bugged me.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Start Trek for its science fiction aspect but I think they've carried the absurd premise that man (and everything) has evolved to an even more absurd extreme in this episode. it's as bad as the Voyager episode where they de-evolve when reaching warp 10. I can't help but constantly mutter "dumb" to myself as I watch this episode.
