The scene before this had Guinan telling Picard while it's unsual for a captain to attend an away mission. She said it was imperative that he goes to this one otherwise they would have never met. A testament to great writers who can spot and plug a hole in the story line.
Worf beams back down after the others have phased out.. “accidentally” damages or moves one of the inhibitor rods… grins. New title card appears “Now begins the tales of Captain Worf” :D
I remember watching this episode when it aired. My family had been visiting my uncle but my cousin was also a Star Trek fan and we were able to watch. I recall being in despair as we wouldn't find out what happens until September, a bad thing as it meant the looming Summer vacation would be over.

Roight? Know the Mirror Universe with the sinister versions of them? They should make another alternate reality where everyone doesn’t follow the lead of their superiors. “Where’s he going?” ‘Who knows, who cares.’ “I’m signaling the ship, let’s get out of here. That was the most unbelievable moment in all of ST:TNG in my opinion. The top command all went on an away mission, to a place in spacetime from which they had no idea the risk? Lol. Okay.
Even more unbelievable than: 1. The Captain, Doctor and Security Chief being sent on a commando mission? (Chain of Command Part 1) 2. The ship being easily captured by two obsolete birds of prey? (Rascals) 3. The Captain violating the prime directive nine times since taking command and only being asked a single question about it by a paranoid, witch hunting Admiral? (The Drumhead) Three years before this the Captain stated he may suffer more greatly than death for a single violation of the Prime Directive. (Justice) 4. Sela, a Romulan/Human hybrid being given a position of great authority in an intolerant and xenophobic Empire? (Redemption Parts 1 and 2) Sela being given another chance by the same Empire at another crackpot scheme after the first one failed because she didn't grasp that her fleet could easily bypass a 23-ship blockade? (Unification Part 1 and 2) 5. Worf being the most incompetent chief of security, losing nearly every hand-to-hand and phaser fight while failing to protect the ship and crew and being incessantly ignored by the Captain. (The entire series!) 6. (My Favorite) A 74-year-old Captain decides to single handedly board an enemy ship crewed by large monsters and a clone of himself where he must succeed to save his ship instead of deciding to send his powerful, strong, quick, ageless android who could have easily achieved the mission. (Star Trek: Nemesis)
@@peter5.056 Thank you, I agree with you it is way up there in strained believability with Picard just shuffling ahead of the pack with the whole command crew minus Worf. Since, you know they could randomly end up back in time on Earth and explaining the Klingon appearance would be hard.
The implication being that this type of trek time travel is of the "you can't change the past" variety and thus the characters have zero agency/free will... as opposed to all the other types of timetravel where you clearly can? Yay inconsistent plot/serial requirements.
Four senior officers. When does the Chief Engineer and the doctor go on an exploratory mission? Surely it for security, junior grade science officers etc?

They all have designated actors. Worf is in line for command. There would be a tactical officer taking Worf's place, an assistant chief medical officer, etc.

Summer vacation was always like that as a kid. I remember waiting all summer for the second half of the best of both worlds.
Imagine the fun they would have had on 19th century Earth trying to disguise Worf.
Definitely not a Frenchman.
They could try to make him Russian and give him a big furry hat!
Or they could give him a robe and a turban!

Joseph Merrick?
Much easier disguising Spock in the 1930s.
I know it’s just a show, but you got the captain first officer doctor counselor Chief engineer, gone. The whole command structure.
Yeah, you would think promotion in Starfleet comes at a quick pace especially if this is standard procedure on all Starfleet vessels.

The enterprise in not a warship
well it had historical importance and follow ups for which he needed to go
Geordi hooks up the crew with some DMT vapes.
this is why picard was my fave captain. he always looked out for his crew. when data vanished, our beloved captain took it personal.

You gotta hand it to the writers on this one, they really nailed the whole aliens in a cave aspect of this one.

I guess Worf is captain now. The only one out of the senior staff smart enough to stay behind on the ship.

My guess is that when they arrived in 19th Century San Francisco, they had an immediate confrontation with the aliens, but they somehow got away.
Why did I expect Picard to get lit up by gangsters while going through a portal. Him taking "Lead" and all.

What happened to the little beep sound on their communicators?
An imprint? They stepped outta the 3ltri stand Kizer thingy they were in. Writers gettin' lazy in the 90's
