Maruki and Viktor from Arcane are so similar it’s insane

Azathoth as a Demiurge makes quite a bit of sense. At the end of the day, Maruki is a man thrust into the position of divinity by chance, and with no understanding of what goes into it, and no sight beyond what his mortal perspective sees. In other words, a blind idiot god.

All the points made are legit in some way and I don't wish to argue. However, I will say that Satan being the modern representation of rebellion and individual freedom does not apply to all "Abrahamic religion". What you're saying can only be applied to Christianity and probably Islam as well. However, in Judaism and more specifically in the Torah, there's a clear message from God about the importance of choice. The book ends of giving the Israelites freedom from slavery and the freedom of choice. Satan has a small role in Tanach (aka the "OT") which is to test people's choice (like the book of Job) In other words, Satan is still considered a loyal servant to God in Judaism, is where I am getting at. And if the Persona developers would learn more about Judaism, rather than Christianity, maybe they would have gone with a different approach to Joker's Rebellion against any type of control. But, that being said, it's no secret that Persona does play tongue-in-cheek with God by on one hand not spelling God's name and censoring it, but shooting him in the "face" with a "sinful shot". Would Persona go so far as to portray Jesus as the next final boss? 99% They wouldn't if we're being honest :/

strange, I Find her persona one of the more fitting ones, NOT AS SUMIRE but as Kasumi, the girl she tought she was when she awakend her persona. Sumire, Like Cinderella had a life in pain that she hates, one day a Fairy godmother "Dr Maruki" apears and turn's her into a princess, the kind of person she wants to be "Kasumi" she goes to the ball and mets his Prince Charming "Joker" some one she sees as so wondefull she cud have never talked to him when she was just Cinderella "Summire" But in this Case the Tale is suberted, when she Realizes that she is in fact not Kasumi but Summire she refuse to live as her, she dos't want to go back to liffe in cinders she wants to keep being a princess "Kasumi" But Prince charming "joker" is not gonna let her, instead of solving all her problems he oposes her, he is not gona let his and everyone's liffe be dictated By Maruki's wishes so he oposes them the midnight the Clock strikes is Reality itself, the spell is Broken and she is Back to being Summire Even while Living as Kasumi, Sumire wasn't exactly happy. she was having strugles by trying to be Kasumi and falling short this two twins are in fact very diferent people Kasumi was bold carefree and straight forward and a bit of an airhead while Sumire is shy self concious, toughtfull and Gracefull, this is why Summire cudn't succede while being Kasumi, her true nature sliped from time to time and while she was playing to Kasumi's strenghts she wasn't playing to her own. Joker's roll is diferent from Prince charming, He isn't gonna Solve Cinderella's "Summire's" problems Instead he helps her get in touch with who she Really is and nurture her grouth, Summire starts to make her own decisions and live her liffe as Sumire while honoring Kasumi instead of becoming her. in the end then she awakens her new persona Vanadis, she is now a fully fledge Phantom thief and Later her third awakening its just Ella, no more cinderella no princess Cinderella just Ella. Finally embracing who she trully is.

I finally finished persona after giving up on it months ago and i HATED aketchi before. I thought he was full of shit lol (and i was right) then after the maruki arc hes become my favorite. That did is crazy awesome

Ok, this is super late but one of the choices that always stuck out to me is when we're talking to mishima after kamoshida's spike and kamoshida shows up. Obviously it's a very tense moment and pretty much anything we say can come off as confrontational but one of the dialogue options is something along the lines of: "You have a nice spike". I always imagined he said that line very coldly so while he is making a joke about it he is also directly confronting against someone in power in such a tense situation, i just always loved that characterization.

i think akechi is a great character, lots of nuance and complexity in his personality, but to me hes just a flamboyant version of adachi, the twist was so predictable and royal kinda meat rides him a little, i love persona 5 but i do hate the theme of "justice" (not injustice) which is the embodiment of akechi's character and is basically "im right, youre wrong". he still is like the best persona antagonist personally, which is surprising because i hate him so much

I very much disliked how akechi handled “avenging his own mother” because in the process he allowed his hands to be covered in his fathers crimes and ultimately even though he broke out of his mask he is still affected by his poor decisions leading to his existence to fade away after maruki’s reality was brought to an end. Revenge and sadness foil around each other creating ambitions that are no longer aligning with your own personal values. He was smart to figure out his own cases as a detective but as a boy he wasn’t able to distinguish his own feelings, revenge runs deep.

I like the idea that Kamoshida is a ram because he likes to figuratively butt heads with others, rams literally butt heads with eachother. I think that’s just funny

I love Kamoshida, I always love a villain who is evil in a realistic way. I love how relatable Shiho is, I love how real all of Kamoshida as a villain is, and I LOVE analyzing his character

I’m four years late, but.. in the official P5R guidebook, an interview with the writers says they made two endings, one which is considered the “bad” ending by players, which they call the ideal ending, and the “good” ending which iirc is called a true ending or different ending. so, there’s no true correct answer in this.. it all depends on what you believe. when you think about it, it does undermine the efforts you made to overcome your trauma. but what about the people who have been wronged their entire life? maybe because of a flawed school system, or not being able to get a job.. homeless people.. people in abusive situations that have genuinely no way out? those are just examples.. if you were to reject maruki’s reality, you’d rob these people of the only chance they had to live the normal healthy life they deserved. i definitely wouldn’t want all my efforts to just have no meaning so i wouldnt accept the offer. but it’s hard for you to decide when you consider other people who many not have had it in them to overcome their struggles like you. I wish there could’ve been a compromise.. where the people who made an effort to overcome life can get to live with those achievements, and the people who genuinely can’t do it to live the ideal reality they deserve. but that is out of the realms of possibility since maruki cannot target each and every single one of them. this is truly the greatest gaming experience ever, and im so glad I’ve gotten to play it

The blueprint of the 10 Sefirot, with each Sefirah containing infinite layers/worlds within worlds. The perfect lifeform. The ultimate lifeform. And to think that Adam Kadmon (in P5R) is the evolved form of Azathoth, the dreaming dreamer whose dream is the totality of reality itself (which is made of multiple layers of “infinity” in the Lovecraft mythos). Shadow (and anyone who is entitled as the ultimate lifeform) can eat their heart out.

People seem to think that the work you put in throughout the game is invalidated in Maruki a world but that’s not the case. You were doing what you could to better the world within the framework it was in, that being a rather poor one that was controlled by tyrants and bigots. The framework changes under maruki, and therefore I don’t think it’s right to equivocate the two circumstances. At the very least in an ideal world maruki would individually ask people what they desire, to be free with pain or have no pain and not be “free” (but personally no pain is freeing), and then act accordingly.

As a duo, Joker and Crow are the best ones I’ve ever seen. They complement themselves. They ARE Yin Yang. What is the Leader of the Phantom Thieves without its major rival? I bet the game started to worsen its ideas - just a tad bit, and only in some aspects - because of the lack of Akechi. He’s just so important.

I also LOOOOOOOOOOVE the idea of "the role of a God in the world" that has really amazing ties with the whole SMT thing, P5R mixes the Persona themes with SMT themes with Maruki.

I think its a bike because biker gangs are used to be shown as rebellious people doing things not in a legal way but they do it for heroic reasons And that totally goes with the phantom thieves just like haru code name noir

I think it's fair for people to hate Akechi for what he's done, and I'm not justifying his actions, but it's clear that his mind is broken from what has happened in the past. As someone who has been abandoned by my own father, I think how he acts makes a lot of sense. Hiding your pain in the public eye, keeping your weaknesses/issues hidden, putting up a mask/barrier, that's what I've had to do, which he definitely has done to. He hides everything from the public, he never shows his weaknesses, and tries to never break that mask near the public. I think it makes sense that he'd act the way he does. He might not be morally right in some regard, but that doesn't mean he's completely evil. For example, look to the 3rd semester, rejecting a reality that doesn't allow people to control their own fate. While yes, he does have some sadist qualities, he doesn't have the best moral compass, and it doesn't justify what he has done, that doesn't mean he can't change. The past is the past, and you can't change it.

Makoto is BY FAR the best silent protagonist. His whole gimmick is that he is passive and ambivalent to everything... until he isn't, but that's beside the point. Joker has his little jokes and Makoto has the "Whatever.", "I don't care." and the entire situation is playing with the idea of him being this "trope" to almost a tee, and yet evolving into something deeper through it and because of it. His silence, lack of expression, some of the dialogue choices being inattentive or even rude or completely passive as if perfectly embodying the "blandness" silent protagonists tend to have. But, in the end, it only serves to better show his actual existing characterization, as I already mentioned. Sorry, but Joker isn't exactly the best example of a silent protagonist, because he has more zest and spice than the average one, Makoto is, because he's transcended the existing narrative trope he was put into.

This is very late lol but I wholeheartedly agree with what you say. I greatly prefer Royal because it tied up all the loose ends with Akechi, and Maruki adds an entirely new dimension to the complex nature of what the Thieves are doing. I was disappointed with how Akechi was handled in the base game, and I feel like Royal nailed it and fleshed out Akechi’s character when he very much needed it. He went from a meh character to outstanding in my opinion. And morally ambiguous villains are my favorite, they’re the most interesting and Maruki is more than just a one-dimensional character addition.

It's fascinating how joker genuinely comes off as quiet vs mute. You get the sense that he's tired of or feels above having to explain himself, especially when people look down on him. Also he's a snarky conversation sniper. It's great

What’s interesting is one of the directors of the game has explicitly pointed out that neither Akechi nor Maruki know for sure that Akechi is dead. They are both deducing it from incomplete information, but even Maruki cannot know. With the deleted scene of Akechi in the rehab facility, if we assume the true ending cinematic to be confirming Akechi is alive and assume that the rehab scene is what was happening to Akechi in the proper reality even in the final product, was the third semester Akechi really a cognitive being like Wakaba, or is it the real Akechi put in a different place like how Joker is displaced from prison in Maruki’s reality? I think it is equally interesting to consider that maybe there briefly were two Akechis, and the real one in the end will never know what happened, vs. it was the real Akechi, and his experience in Maruki’s world is what actually made him well enough to leave and eventually see Joker on the platform.

Most people have experienced someone like Kamoshida in their life. Atlus did a good job making you hate him very quickly. My thoughts went from: "That guy was weird" to very quickly to: "Death would be too merciful for you, yet is very tempting." Also, his Shadow's boss form perfectly represents how disgusting of a human he is on many levels.

I just wish even in the dialogue choices the VA would read them. The game wants you to play as Ren not a pokemon trainer let us hear a voice attached to the lines. It kinda disconnects you when you select a line to say and then you hear the other character say things like Im a mute holding up a white erase board or something. Sure in your head you can do that too but it hits different when you hear a voice to a person.
