    Anyone else completely forget futaba’s persona was called necronomicon? It’s not like I dislike futaba or necronomicon I just forgot. I guess when it’s name isn’t constantly being shouted out it’s easy to forget lol

      That's true. It wasn't even said when it first appeared; you have to check for yourself what it's called. And even then, it's mainly hiding in plain sight in the game itself, so it's understandable that not a lot of people know what Necronomicon's name is.

      As far as i know, the name "necronomicon" is only said *once* across all of p5 and it's spin-off material: an optional, unvoiced dialouge with futaba during the sapporo arc in strikers where she considers putting up a kotatsu in necronomicon.

  • @shadowstar8619
    @shadowstar8619 3 роки тому +42

    Necronomicon's Persona 4-esque awakening also serves as what might be a friendly callback to the game in question. We start off with Futaba's Shadow, who doesn't really seem that bad to begin with. Defensive and skeptical, of course, but not genuinely malicious. Then at the moment of actual awakening after a heart-to-heart between Futaba and her Shadow, the latter transforms into the Persona.
    That said, Necronomicon still has its own personality, and its voice most likely comes from the little gargoyle sitting on top of the UFO body, which is overlooked surprisingly often. It helps to emphasize how Futaba is the youngest Palace ruler and Persona user, and the smallest one, too (before Strikers anyway).
    Also, when you consider what exactly Necronomicon says, another connection between the Persona and its origins. After bringing Futaba into the saucer, it says, "The forbidden wisdom has been revealed." The original Necronomicon itself is considered a tome of forbidden wisdom, between the efforts to burn it into oblivion and how anyone who reads it is said to be driven insane by what's recorded inside.
    "Forbidden wisdom" as a whole also leads into Prometheus as Futaba's second-tier Persona, and even ties into her mother. After Prometheus gave humanity the forbidden gift of fire and even taught them how to trick the gods, he was punished and tortured up until Heracles set him free. Futaba's mother Wakaba amassed great knowledge of the cognitive world and was ultimately killed by those who sought her research. After years of being psychologically tortured by the people who killed her mother and turned her whole family against her, Futaba was finally set free by the Phantom Thieves in the same way Heracles freed Prometheus.

    Necronomicon has always been the odd one out in P5 so it's great to see you covering it

    I've always thought that Necronomicon was an alien because the ancient gods are too, I've never realized that it was meant to represent Futaba feeling different from others. Also maybe "the forbidden knowledge" of Necronomicon could also refer to Futaba finally learning the truth about her mother's death ?

    I've always wondered what necronomicon's combat mode would look like. In case you didn't know, in arena ultimax, rise was so determined to help her friends that her persona himiko gained a new form with combat skills. Rise was then able to choose whether or not to summon himiko in search mode or combat mode. So, naturally, i'm curious as to what necronomicon's combat mode would be. My current theories are either 1. it turns into a kraken, with the ufo as it's head, 2. it turns into a tank that futaba can get inside of to blast her foes, 3. it turns into an actual tome which futaba can use to cast spells, or 4. it becomes a gargoyle. This is based on the opening to the p5 anime, as it features a shot of close-ups to all the persona's faces, and necronomicon's face is apparently that of the little stone gargoyle sitting on top of the ufo. This form would then be that gargoyle, but larger, capable of moving and with the regular necronomicon color sheme.

      I was wondering this with a friend, and we kinda guessed she could maybe play sort of like Tron Bonne from MvC3 where its just a girl riding on a big robot. Which would be some cool variation for a Persona/SMT arena game

    As someone with very similar issues to Futaba, I've always felt very alien to others, and I love how her personas reflect that.

  • @thinkabout42
    @thinkabout42 2 роки тому +3

    What I also love about her personas, is that her evolution line has a clearly designed progression.
    From the book signifying seeking and obtaining forbidden knowledge for yourself (and your own group) to Prometheus, a symbol of sharing said knowledge to others indiscriminately, even at the cost of your own well-being and even life.
    Which is shown in Futaba's actions, for example, the way she puts herself in obvious danger by hacking into the television broadcasting network to spread the truth about Shido and PT.

    Great video as always, I love seeing your interpretations of these!
    I agree with almost all of your points about her persona, but I think one notable thing you left out of the video is the resemblance to a jellyfish when the tentacles are outstretched. This was probably done to 1) illustrate the ocean themes of lovecrafts work and 2) to portray how futaba tends to push people away, like a jellyfish would sting anyone who would come near it (this is also why it loses this aspect when she helps out Kana/becomes more open to making friends, and the persona becomes Prometheus). The jellyfish could also symbolize something similar to aliens, both being creatures considered weird and foreign. Jellyfish (jellyfishes?) also tend act with not a lot of care for the world around it, which represents how futaba is pretty frequently considered to be on her own wavelength
    I don’t know if this was at all international, it was just my interpretation. That’s what’s so great about sojimas designs though, they’re all so open to interpretation!

    Something i noticed and wanted to add, is how Necronomicon actually relates to her story arc, which i found to be very neat!
    So i hope no one minds this paragraph here:
    SPOILERS
    Just as the Necronomicon holds forbidden knowledge, and was therefore hidden to not let these dark and horrifying secrets out;
    It's similar to how Futaba learns the (forbidden) truth of her mothers death and how she was lied and manipulated to. This in turn causing her tremendous amount of pain. The "Necronomicon" she obtains, as part of her persona is the knowledge she has gained and accepted to use as her strength to keep going. Allowing her to not be deceived again or lose sight of her mother's love.
    It's perfect how they chose this Persona for her! There's more i could probably add but this is the best i can write it :p

    I like to think that the designers for the persona azathoth took inspiration from necronomicons tendrils. The share a similar color scheme and it would make sense for them to have at least that much considering they were both Lovecraft inspired persona.

      There's an interesting connection in the idea that the two Lovecraftian Personas belong to the characters who were involved, directly or indirectly, with the cognitive psience research. And there's an extra layer with their Personas' respective roles in the Cthulhu Mythos and their own motivations in the story.

    Yes, some Futaba analysis. I love her unusual UFO persona, you could also consider it a "safe space" where Futaba is free to hack and support all she pleases while remaining far from the danger. One of persona's finest characters

  • @FalloutJack
    @FalloutJack Рік тому

    Small error in Futaba's Shadow and Persona situation. Her own psyche was infected by Masayoshi Shido, using her mother's research into Cognative Psience. The actions of the people discovering her 'suicide note' were there to reinforce the influences put upon her by Shido and whatever means they have to manipulate people. (To be clear, Akechi probably never invaded Futaba's mind. They just did this to keep her quiet.) The Cognative Psience developed her Palace and Shadow, but they are brought forth unnaturally be trauma, the trauma that created the nightmare version of her own mother, the giant Cognative Wakaba you fight atop the pyramid.
    During the visit to the Palace tomb, Shadow Futaba is there, but she isn't violent. She is plagued by her own fear and pain, unable to sort out the problem until the Phantom Thieves come in. Once the memories are reassembled properly, Futaba's Shadow is not the enemy, but her own salvation. When Futaba enters her own Palace, her Shadow doesn't try to correupt her, as you might expect, but help her, and that is why the Necronomicon was born. It not only represents forbidden knowledge of the universe, but also nods to the paradoxical way in which she has awakened.
    Futaba herself is a big favorite on my end, too. She is probably the closest and most important characters to the Main Character, being both the (legally adopted) daughter of the man supervising your parole and the daughter (by birth) of the woman who's research drives the plot of the game. To be attached so much to everything central to the plot and have the help out in solving so much in the background with the MC and everybody else on the forefront makes her a central pillar, right along with Joker himself.

    Worst persona design for me imo. The ideea was cool but the implementation was so bad. You got this accured forbidden book and you turn it into a hentai UFO. They could've made it into a book stand with different figures prasing around it and the book couldv'e had a thing of driving the person insane, or you could've made the support character an actual playable member in witch she would be able to be an buff/debuff only character and summon different cool lovecraftian stuff.
