- While all of the dungeons in Persona 5 Royal are excellent in their own way I think everyone has their favorites. It seems that the three palaces featured in todays video are not just special to me, but to a lot of my viewers! So today I'm diving deep into the best aspects of each palace and having a look at what makes them stand out!

Maruki’s Palace is good because... it lets you actually *play the game.* I can’t believe it took this long for the Persona series to ditch the “do it in one day” final dungeons that don’t allow you to take a breather or participate in any of the real life mechanics. It’s completely cutting you off from a full half of the gameplay, which doesn’t make any sense for the final dungeon in the game. Maruki’s Palace lets you go through it at your own pace, and you actually get to be in the real world a lot, which is great because during this palace the real world is arguably the most interesting it has ever been in modern Persona.
I actually really love when you send the calling card in Maruki’s Palace instead of Life Will Change playing it’s I Believe instead which an amazing song.
I Believe is such a god tier song, I wish you got to hear it more than once because of how good it is
I've often wondered if our love of Maruki's Palace was just "New Toy Syndrome" but as time goes on I find more and more to love about it. I hope whatever Persona does next can match up
Sae's palace bangs so hard
I don't know about you, but every time I hear Futaba's theme, it reminds me of her inability to move on. That melody just got something that represents everything about her perfectly.
Most likely due to it's repetitive note pattern. But despite that repetition it's still an amazing song I love

The third semester absolutely has stuck with me for the past year plus. It's probably one of the coolest ideas and have inspired me to write a game using a similar premise
I must say, my favorite palaces aren't any of those three (now I'm replaying the game and I'm on Maruki's palace, and I liked on the first run, but I wont take it into account). My favorite are Kaneshiro's and Shido's palaces. Kaneshiro's bank is just a cool place with a song I love, you get one of the best characters as a party member, and the puzzles (security cameras and the passwords) are puzzles that if you know the answer before the game tells you, you can go through them easily. And Shido's Palace is the most epic palace in the game. It's like when I was playing Mario Galaxy and the Bowser levels were not castles or airships, but a whole galaxy filled with lava and enemies and had epic music to set the tone. And the boss fight would be my favorite because of the meaning it has for Joker, but my favorite is Okumura's boss. Also bonus points for the Akechi boss fight.
Also, Futaba's Palace is the palace I find more boring gameplay-wise. Plus, all the safe rooms (besides one) are on the main corridor, that leads to the entrance with no enemies between them. What's the point on that? The lore, the music and Futaba's story can be good, but I'm that kind of person that prefers gameplay over story.

i feel like marukis palace is the best not just because of the actual palace itself, but because of the story and characters that come along with it. the entirety of the 3rd semester is just perfect
The third semester is very good although it does have a few problems with pacing. Something cool they could've done is tie your confidants, especially with the other thieves, to the events of the third semester. The higher the confidant rank the easier to snap the thieves out of the dream, maybe if it was too low they tried to stop you. Just an idea to add some conflict and drama to the story. But it's just an idea.

Futaba’s Palace was the one that hit me the most. I’m Egyptian and I also lost my mother when I was younger. Seeing Futaba’s distorted memories pretty much ruin her life was one of the most emotional parts of the game for me. And to top it all off, seeing her with Wakaba in the 3rd Semester, only to break the false reality felt like a punch in the gut as I’ve wished for similar things in the past.
That’s why Maruki’s Palace works so well. It builds on the Phantom Thieves’ own personal trauma and conflict that’s expressed in their S.Links, so seeing their wishes come true only to wake them up really does leave the player feeling conflicted.
All in all, P5R is amazing, the addition of Maruki was absolutely phenomenal, I was worried about the new director of P5R but it seems the series is in good hands. Hopefully P6 will have characters as compelling and thought-provoking as Takuto Maruki.
I like how the top 3 palace rulers have personal attachment to Joker
Futaba- Joker's little sister (in the terms of Sojiro being his father figure for the time being)
Sae- His prosecutor and Makoto's older sister a.k.a the one you spend the most time with.
Maruki- The councilor who always had Joker's back and the person whose confidant you need to max out plus the one.
All 3 have personal attachment or relationships to Joker so ergo they get unique treatment

Great points! I've seen a music-focused video from TheMurphination describe all the elements in Gentle Madman and why it makes such a strong impression on us, it was really nice. I was also going to name Whims of Fate on your community question, but I though it's kind of implicit that it's one of the best songs in the game, and a lot of other people had already talked about it.

Whims of fate will always have a special place in my heart. This song fits so much the vibe of the entire palace. Everything the phantom thieves have been fighting for is at stake, and you can feel it. Heck I even started playing bass just to learn, how to play, that shows how much I love this palace theme, but I got to admit that gentle madman is by far the best palace theme in the entire game imo, almost as good a heaven from persona 4.

I didn't really realize how good The Days When My Mother Was Here was until after I played the game and started hearing a lot about it, and when I decided to listen to it I was not disappointed. I'm intrigued to see if this will be a series in the future, keep up the good work!
Maruki: A lab and mental institution by a kind heart man that see himself as a god that tries to make heaven.
Sae: A legal system building that runs more like unregulated casino run by a woman who overcome by envy.
Futaba: a tomb with the future of techo and the past of the pyramids by a girl devastated by wrath and sloth
I honestly feel the same way about these palaces. Futaba's being my personal favorite due to me relating to her struggles so hard, if I had a palace it would probably be extremely similar to hers
My personal favorite palace is maruki's because I like how it seems kind and welcoming while the same time being shady and dangerous.
I would love that episode on Sae's palace and the meaning behind it. So many people focus on Akechi's story (which I do love) but no one really talks about why her palace is a casino and what it means
Persona 5 improved the dungeons soooo much not only in gameplay. I love P3 but Tartarus ain't got shit on the palaces (also why are all the dungeon themes with lyrics such bangers)
While I like Tartarus and it's cold atmosphere , I kinda like mementos more

Another great video. The palaces, especially these 3, are easily one of the best parts of the game. The crooked casino is a good representation of the Japanese legal system in the game. Even in real life it is somewhat infamous for having a conviction rate of over 90%. When atlus were making persona 5 they wanted to call attention to real sociocultural issues in modern Japan. LadyVirgalia has made some great videos analysing them and how they affect the main characters.
Well, my favourite palace track is sweatshop.
Futaba and Maruki’s palaces are by far my favorite ones in the game tbh. Not just due to their designs, since a pure white mental health facility illustrates Maruki’s desire to make everyone happy by basically reprogramming their mind, and Futaba’s being a pyramid to show how she’s isolated herself from society and sees her room as nothing but a tomb for her to waste away and eventually die…but because of their overall storyline. As much as I like P5, each palace ruler are pretty much objectively evil, so it’s quite hard to sympathize them. Which I get is the point, but it makes it so the only real motivation to take them down, besides to save that arc’s lead, such as Yusuke with Madarame, Makoto with Kaneshiro, or Haru with Okumura, is because they’re bad people doing bad things.
But Futaba and Maruki (and Sae to a lesser degree) are a subversion of this idea since instead of taking their heart to bring them to justice, you’re instead doing so to help them. Being that they’re just kind, normal people who you already have a connection to: one who’s a young girl ailing due to her traumatic past and the other who, methods nonwithstanding, is a man who just wants to make the world a better place so that no one else should suffer like his girlfriend, Rumi, or Sumire did. And because you can truly understand their inner plight or ideals, along with learning more about their background as you delve through the palace, it makes the drive to steal their heart that much more personal.
Plus, their themes are just absolute *bops* and encapsulate their characters perfectly. Days When Mother Was There’s rising and droning notes almost mirrors that of someone crying, which I remember someone bringing up before, which fits due to Futaba’s suffering. And Gentle Madman has a haunting, melodic tune to show that Maruki sees himself as a messiah that will bring true happiness to the world. Yet once you reach the final area and the second theme plays, Out of Kindness, the piano becomes more frantic and is joined by a droning trumpet and guitar, signifying his desperation and desire for you to understand that he’s doing this…well, out of kindness.
Didn’t expect this comment to be this long, wowee. But despite being easy to hate on, P5 is definitely far deeper than several peeps give it credit for, if this comment or video is any indication. And Royal only makes it oh-so much better.

Personally I like Okumura's palace a lot but I do like space and robots. Reminds me a lot of Sonic Adventure 2. And once you get the puzzles figured out, it's not that difficult. The boss battle on the other hand....
You brought up a good point about the music in Whims of Fate being iconic. Interestingly enough, I made a video recently where I had non-Persona fans rank Persona 5 music, and they actually ranked Whims of Fate (along with Gentle Madman and The Days When My Mother Was There) with a low score. Thought that was interesting that the Top 3 Palaces got ranked the lowest music without proper context given to them.
Something I'd like to put in about Futaba's palace theme as someone much more into music than most. What seals this Palace theme as top 2 or 3 (my favorites change constantly lmao) is the melody guitar. The clean tone with the vibratos it does (when someone moves a string up and down while holding a note) is incredibly emotional sounding. It replicates the sound of a person crying better than pretty much any other instrument you'll find, it's almost as if you can hear Futaba's cries of despair over her mother who she believes she is responsible for killing. It also definitely helps that it's very reminiscent of Carlos Santana who is one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.
I think Futaba's Palace theme hides the most complexity under the surface. It abop sure but it is also extremely melancholic and sad and it covers that feeling of regret loss and nostalgia without any lyrics. In fact the lack of lyrics may very well be intentional as some people have claimed the song sounds like it should have lyrics but was purposefully left without in order to create the sense that something is missing, which if that is actually the case is ingenious considering the subject matter it's tied to.

I know you say you're no music expert but I'd love to see you do a video on your favorite Persona songs (doesn't have to be from royal) and hey maybe some content on other Persona games or SMT, the only ones I've played is 4 and 5 but when I get time I definitely will play through persona 3 and hopefully have the time for all the others, oh and would love to hear your thoughts on strikers if you've played or finished it.

For my top 3 palace themes, I would keep Gentle Madman and Whims of Fate, but change Days When Mother Was There with Price (another version)

I'm glad someone caught that actually! Price was mentioned almost as much as Whims of Fate so I wanted to include it in the video somewhere but didn't have the time to work it into the script.

idk if anyone here uses tiktok, but there's been a trend on there recently where people rank palace themes, and for some reason i've never seen gentle madman in anyone's top 3 :-/ all of maruki's palace's music is so good and so fitting! it blows my mind that some people don't like any of it

Based on maruki and futaba a persona user can manifest a palace if they haven't awakened their persona yet? They could have explained that better in game. At any rate great palace design especially the memories. Maybe the other palaces would've been better if they included important memories of their rulers, after all there's cut content of kamoshida's memories. Keep the great videos coming.

Sae’s palace is the only palace i will always look forward to when I’m replaying the game again. The aesthetics, the music but mostly the unique casino aspect with the coins. I love all of it
Marukis is just one hell of a trip and i didn’t know what i was looking at half the time, but man was it a blast.
Futaba’s palace can be a little daunting but that’s just because I don’t like desert levels lol

I loved futabas story but... after finishing p5 once and then playing royal 3 times I have to say that I really hate her palace cause it’s soo long and difficult to remember where to go. btw the days when my mother was there is my favorite song from persona 5.

She has a great video series about each of the Phantom Thieves and the Japanese sociocultural issues their individual stories touch upon, and her video about Joker talks a lot about the real life police brutality and manipulation that goes on there.
Aight I agree with Maruki (Also I'm pretty sure his palace is called the center of melancholy or the lab of sorrow) and Futaba but Sae come on it isn't that good (Outside of the narrative) I found it to be the second worst palace in the game if you don't count non depth mementos the design is just a casino it felt like every other casino level ever from any video game I have played the gameplay is basic and brings nothing new to the table besides the coins which are stupid I never used them other then the times I need them to progress in the palace like people rag on the air lock puzzles in Okumura's palace but at least it's something original I'm willing to forgive Komoshida's palace for being basic because it's the first dungeon in the game but for a palace that was the 3rd to last dungeon and when the Climax of the story starts I won't forgive it there's nothing that stood out to me it felt like playing through a more stylish mementos this dungeon fails hard to show the why Sae is the way she is it felt like just another palace the way they repecent the legal system with the palace is pretty great though also whims of fate is my least favorite song in the whole franchise it's sets a good mood for a casino but gets old quick and by the second time I was in the palace I was listening to my own music my top 3 would Be 1.Maruki 2.Futaba and 3.is a tie between Shido and Madarame and my overall ranking would be 5.Komoshida 6.Okumura 7.Depths 8.Sae and 9.Kanashiro (Mementos would be number 9 if you count it)
Before watching: my guess is the final 3 Palaces, although I personally would've replaced Maruki with Kamoshida

I fully agree with Maruki and Sae's Palace. Both are so amazingly designed and just fun.
But i CANT agree with Futabas. It was in my eyes the 2nd worst Palace in the whole Game. ( Right after Kaneshiros. You cant change my mind that Kaneshiros Palace is NOT the worst )
I mean, maybe i can understand it if we speak ONLY about the Story in that Arc. But Gameplay wise its so BAD.
For me, the 3rd Palace is reserved for Kamoshida. You get introduced into the PT Thing, into the Palaces, and the Story surrounding it.
How are a casino or a pyramid nontraditional? Every single palace is a classic place for thieves, including the research lab.
While the structures themselves are not inherently untraditional, each of the three owners is a nontraditional villain. Two of the palaces owners end up joining the Phantom Thieves cause (Futaba & Sae) and the third has an entire arc dedicated to exploring his nature as a morally grey figure (Maruki). If you look through the other videos on this channel you'll find I'm usually more interested in exploring and discussing the symbolic aspects of this game rather than the literal. While these palaces in design alone may not be untraditional they represent the mental state of untraditional villains and as such when analyzing them from that standpoint they can be understood as untraditional even though the looks may be deceiving. Hope this cleared up the video a little bit for you!
Man I thought Shido or Kamoshida would be third. I guess I'm in the minority of people who don't like Futabas palace. Maybe that's just because it's the most annoying to replay and I've played it 5 times.

My biggest problem with Futaba’s palace is how dumb the boss looks and sounds (and the fact that I don’t like desert themes but that’s just my opinion)

Kamoshida is pretty good as well bc it feels personal, but “objectively” speaking these 3 Palaces are better imo
@@sergiosalazar8702 Why "objectively"? Kamoshida is the antagonist for two of your teammates, and the earliest ones at that.
The Palace's flowery atmosphere is among the best. It acts out being the tutorial really really well, which gives it another big plus.
@@BlazeStorm Because of what’s in the video: The 3 Palace owners are pretty important characters and it’s clear that they’re not full on evil, which gives another layer to it. Kamoshida is top 5 imo tho, great introduction to the game
To me Kamoshida's Castle is better than both Sea's and Futaba's palaces because of the harder challenge, intense scenario and the villain is just a pathetic cruel asshole.
Fun facts: this video wouldn't have the 5st palace
