Even though Captain Kidd stands out among the thieves' personas for being based on a real person, you could argue the legend of William Kidd is more famous then the man himself. Puts him on the same level as the others in that case.
A story, a legend of rebellion.
I wholeheartedly agree! I think the legend that came about after William Kidd's death is probably more notable than his actions as a historical figure. I find this to be especially true in media as lots of pirate themed fiction has been inspired by his tall tales (Persona included).
Also. Captain Kidd was unfairly punished for a crime he himself did not commit, which, if you take into consideration Ryuji's history with Kamoshida, is rather fitting.
I really think that Electricity and physical was the perfect combination of specializations for Ryuji. Together, they make him capable of independently setting up and paying off powerful technical hits, making him able to function effectively on his own, but they also make him capable at cooperating with his teammates well, with consistent ability to set up and pay off on his teammates efforts. Ironically, he and Morgana are weak to each others respective elements. On that note, he also has absolutely no synergy with Morgana in battle (from my perspective, I am definitely not an expert) with Morgana incapable of dealing or preparing technical damage with Ryuji, considering that Morgana's only physical skills are intended for crits, and his wind skills are only technical on burn. (though I suppose Morgana as a healer does compliment Ryuji as a tank; again, not an expert) This video is really well put together, and with two out of two videos in this series so far being great, I'm excited for whatever comes up in the future!
You could say something similar about about yusuke's ice abilities, freezing an opponent allows you to get technicals with physical skills, and Ice sculpting is a big form of art.
One thing I would like to add to Captain Kidd's design is the bandage on his right leg which is the leg Kamoshida broke which I think is some nice attention to detail and also adds to Ryuji's persona
Captain Kidd still has a surprising personality contrast with Ryuji from that voice line we hear. Given how his tone remains fairly laid-back in an almost devil-may-care attitude, you really notice how he much he raises his voice by the end of his pre-awakening monologue. One could say he's the "thunder" to Ryuji's "lightning." Regardless of how his user behaves, just Captain Kidd's voice bears the intonation of a commanding captain.
I’ve always thought Captain Kidds aesthetic matched Ryujis personality as well. His persona looks nothing like the actual captain kid but rather something that matches the style of the rowdy, immature, punk that Ryuji is

Ryuji Is downright my most favorite character alongside captain kidd in persona 5! and though he is loud as he always is, he is also the voice for the group when there's no other way to say it, He speaks honestly and forthright!(Even when he swears, which is gold btw^^) They definitely chose a great persona to reflect him by! Which makes me happier knowing it's captain Kidd!^^

Captain Kidd is one the rare personas that is based on an actual historical figure, the other one that is in P5 is Goemon.
Goemon was a real person? I could've sworn one of the P5 school lessons mentioned that it was a similar situation to Johanna where it's debatable wether they really existed or not. I'm no history buff but they seemed to imply it was anti-government propoganda.
I always thought that Captain Kidd’s Buried Treasure Story was a huge inspiration for One Piece. Y’know, extra D in the name, hidden treasure, announcement near death.

4:55 You forgot the other reason Ryugi uses lighting and physical attacks: Game Design.
Since he is one of the first characters you use, his kit is perfect to show off how Technical damage works. You can shock an enemy then use a physical attack. However, if the character hits a shocked enemy vs their personas physical ability. The player then gets shocked transferred to them, which also reinforces the comical side of Ryugis character.
And I just realized how much I was typing. lol
You're absolutely right that game design plays a big part in all characters movesets! I'm really fascinated with these elements and they are certainly not lost on me, however in these videos I'm usually more focussed on thematic/story inspiration and in order to keep things concise and on topic I leave the game design out. That said I am definitely open to exploring these elements in future videos!

No one else thought Ryuji uses lighting because he was one of track teams faster runners before his confrontation with kamoshido? I'm sure you've heard the expression 'quick as lighting' before. Great video though, and shows how we all interprate things differently!

I would really like it if you did a deep dive analysis of Maruki's personas of Azathoth and Adam Kadmon, who I think are some of the greatest personas in the game. Or Zenkichi's Valjean persona from Scramble.

While it's understandable if you want to just focus on the more modern personas for now (this series has only just begun after all), may i request some of the older personas? For example, what about rhadamanthus, the initial persona of eikichi from innocent sin, or yamaoka, the ultimate persona of kei from persona 1 and eternal punishment, who is literally kei's dead butler who returned as a persona to keep protecting kei?
All i'm saying is, there are some really neat personas in the classic era that i'd love to see explained in your style, but if you'd rather continue with the p5 cast, that's also perfectly fine. In any case, i'm looking forward to the next episode!
Those sound really cool! I would love to branch into those older titles! However I have yet to play the older titles in the series and as such feel underqualified to speak on their themes and storytelling mechanics. Right now I'm working my way through P4G and I'm planning on going backwards through the series hopefully all the way down to P1!
Another great analysis here, but there's one little thing you didn't point out that I think is significant. I didn't notice this right away either, but another commenter on a different video mentioned it and now it blows my mind to think about. Did you notice the bandage wrapped around Captain Kidd's right leg, near the knee? Now think back to what Mr. Kamoshida did that ended Ryuji's track career…
Random idea: What about a rewrite for one of the games or how you would do it. Like how you would write Persona 4. After such a great video, I believe you can do it.

i think a lot of the story was left out, william once caught was then hung for weeks as a message to other pirates, much like when kamoshida broke ryujis leg to ruin the track team. A star of their career, decides to rebel and is broken as a message to any would-be sympathists.
Ryuji isn't my favorite Phantom Thief but you better believe his Awakening is my favorite.

Both him and joker have fantastic awakenings! So full of emotional weight and hype! Replaying the scenes where they get their personas to gather the footage was so much fun simply because I got to relive those moments!

Makoto because a bike Persona is ridiculous and Haru because when Mi'Lady shows us them guns I lose it.
Keep the great videos coming. What's your opinion on the phantom thieves outfits vs their personas? The outfits are supposed to be another manifestation of their persona and look the part for the initials but not so much for the evolved ones. I personally would have preferred if the evolved persona kept the initials theme and looked like a natural progression. Such as if Seiten Taisei kept Kidd's pirate theme.

I mean kanji also wasnt haha dumb character gets the physical attack. He is really strong even with his actual body. Remember, the guy followed a biker gang with a bycicle and then beat them up
Oh I'm sure there is a lot more to Kanji than just that gag! From what I have seen of him in persona 4 he's really cool. I suppose I could have framed that part better but what I was getting at was they both kinda fall into the stereotype of "not the smartest but physically strong" and the "haha funny dumb character gets strong physical attacks" line was mostly a jab at other RPGs and games in general rather than directed at the persona series. Reviewing the video tho I can see that the message may not have been conveyed that way! I'll keep this in mind for future videos!
