- The main cast of Persona 5 never fails to bring interesting and unique personas to the table. This week I wanted to look into one of the most requested personas I've noticed in the comments, Yusuke's Goemon.
Music Used:
Persona 5 OST The Poem for Everyone's Souls
Persona 5 OST A Woman
SMT IV OST Battle C1 VR Battle
Persona 5 Strikers OST Camping Trip

#Persona #Goemon #Yusuke
I've got two notes on goemon. First: goemon's focus on ice and physical skills may be a subtle nod to yusuke's status as an artist, as ice sculptures are a form of art. Second: i once heard someone say that yusuke's obsession with lobsters is because of goemon being boiled alive, allowing yusuke to sympathize with the lobsters. It's kind of silly, but i still find it funny
That bit about lobsters is pretty funny! Definitely cannon in my head from now on lol
Goemon @ the beach with Yusuke: "Yusuke...! Those creatures... I know their plight... You do too... It's why you wear your hood here! Yusuke, you must save them!"
Yusuke: "Erm, I have around 3,000 yen..."
Goemon: "YUSUKEEEEE!"
------------------------------------------------
Morgana: "Dude, you can't keep blaming your Persona for your questionable financial decisions."
Yusuke: "But how shall I accept my true self otherwise!?"
I saw a neat theory that the reason Yusuke likes Lobsters is because Goemon was boiled alive, so Yusuke feels a kinship with them due to his Persona's fate.
I always thought Goemon had the 5 because Go is a way to say 5 in japanese.
There's one more thing that connects Goemon to Yusuke. Even though the authenticity of it is still debated, one of the most popular "origin story" of Goemon tell that he was raised by his master, who teached him everything about the ninja arts, but then because of a litige, Goemon fled his master's house, stealing something very precious in the process. Rings a bell ?
That smells of Yusuke’s entry into the story
Wow, this persona fits Yusuke like a glove
I'm curious how you think Milady connects to Haru, as Lady DeWinter seemly is rather the complete opposite of Haru's personality.
It may be a holdover from one of the previous versions of Persona 5 where Haru was given a colder personality, judging by her expression in the OG P5 intro.
You should do Valjean next would love to hear your take on him
I'll take Valjean or Milady next please.
I really love Goemon and how well he goes with Yusuke's general story. Also, I think it's the persona design that is most connected to the owner's phantom thief attire. Yusuke is just so classy for a broke person haha
This video is as Yusuke says, beautifully executed!
I hardly know anything about Goemon, so it's really interesting to hear about him and how he relates to Yusuke. It's unfortunate that he's so often conflated with Robin Hood, considering that he's a distinct mythical and historical figure. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You may be happy to hear that in my research I found that Goemon didn't seem to be conflated with Robin Hood so much as Robin Hood was more used as a cultural shorthand to describe his archetype as a folk hero. I think I could have conveyed this a bit better in the script for this video though so I hope this clears things up a bit!
Oh hey it's Goemon, my favorite mystical Ninja.
That's immediately what i thought about when i first saw his name and design.
I really love how you decipher all of the personas of the persona 5 cast with such detail. If by some chance try doing Makoto's persona Johanna because I'm interested in why it's bike shaped.
I do adore Yusuke and Goemon as his Persona, so im glad you covered this!
Also, the fact that Goemon is his Persona might be a reference to Lupin III and his team - Goemon was a swordsman said to be a great descendant of the original Goemon, and Akira's Persona is supposed to be Arsene Lupin. My brother and i geeked out when we made that connection, even though it might be a bit of a stretch 🤣
Great video!
I’m waiting for this channel to blow up. Don’t know how it hasn’t yet, but it will.
You and me both lol
Lorewise, I'd say Goemon is the Persona most thematically similar to Arsene. Both of them are described as "gentlemen thieves" in their respective cultures, being on the wrong side of the law but having a very strong moral compass. They also both help Joker and Yusuke overcome some form of denial. When Arsene first makes his presence known, players have the ability to say whether the decision that brought Joker to Shibuya was a mistake or not. Most say "It wasn't", but those who choose "It might've been" are granted an extra line of dialogue: Arsene starts laughing and basically tells Joker not to kid himself and show what he's actually feeling. When Goemon makes himself heard, most of his dialogue is spent telling Yusuke about no longer denying himself from accepting the truth (about Madarame) as well as not allowing others to believe in lies either. In a sense, Goemon and Arsene are effectively a respective Far Eastern and Western version of each other.
Thank you for the history lesson on my favorite persona!
Here's another fun connection for you. Have you ever watched the anime Lupin the Third? In that series, Lupin is a world-famous thief and the grandson of Arsene Lupin (AKA Joker's first Persona). He steals treasure all around the world, evades the police, and fights actual evildoers alongside his companions, including Jigan (who bears a striking resemblance to Sojiro Sakura), a sort of shape-shifting woman named Fujiko, and the legendary Japanese gentleman thief Goemon Ishikawa. Hmm… Goemon and Lupin stealing treasure and fighting bad guys together…
great channel and fun series, I think Johanna or Necronomicon would be cool for the next video.
Can we get Carmen next? Love these videos!
I love this series
This makes so much sense! Thank you so much! This has helped answer my questions on goemon. Especially the background and stuff! Even though there wasn’t much of one. XD but thank you! 🥺💖💖
Another Awesome video 3waifu
Yusuke best husband
his follow up attack in P5 makes me think of Goemon the Thirteenth from Lupin III
Hey you think you can cover Makoto yukis Orpheus or Yu and izanagi
Really love the series keep it up
I love this series!
Nothing to say about this f*cking PIPE-AXE ?
Seriously this weapon is awesome
Do Johanna next.
Makoto/Queen is best girl
Would you also make things about older persona games like Orpheus or messiah from p3
It would be interesting to see a comparison between Orpheus and Izunagi, since their stories are kinda similar. The symbolism behind Messiah is pretty obvious if you've played P3.
@@pictonomii3295 actually yes 😂
I read somewhere the number 5 can also represent the order number of the Emporer arcana. If The Fool is 0 counting from that to The Emperor, 4, that will make it 5th in that order.
For me the 5 in Goemon clothe was because the pronounce of 5 in Japanese is GO
Really hoping to see more of those (and maybe hoping you can do the same with the Persona 4 crew 😅)
I still kinda wished Ann's Persona was Carmen San Diego.
I would love to learn about Valjean.
great video! can’t wait for the next one!
Do Valjean or you'll have a riot
I think you should challenge yourself and analyze the personas from megami ibunroku persona.
I'd have to beat it first before I felt comfortable speaking analytically about it lol. That said it's definitely not out of the question for the future!
Wait what about his giant pipe/cigar?
Unless I'm missing something major, this seems to be mostly artistic liberty. From what I could find none of the accounts of Goemon list a cigar/pipe as an item of significance, however this style of pipe is right at home with Ukiyo-e art style. I would wager that this is most likely just something that the character designer found fitting for his design and chose to include it because of that.
@@3Waifu I always thought it was a reference to the Ganbare Goemon (or Mystical Ninja) series, where its Goemon's main weapon is a giant kiseru pipe alot like this
les gooooooo
:)
