  • Fate Zero is probably my favorite story in the Fate series, and I think it absolutely nails Saber's character arc. If you haven't watched it yet, go do that, it is absolutely worth the commitment.

I always kiritsugu and arturias inability to get along very interesting. Like archer and shirou and even shirou and arturia its a running theme that similar people will clash. Arturia was a king who threw away everything of herself to justify the ends of protecting the country. Its stated that she had had to sacrifice many small villages over the years to prop up the armies needed to repell Saxon invaders on the coast for example.
This clashing of ideals works so well because like shirou and arturia on the bridge in fate route...kiritsugu and arturia also call out each other's flaws. Arturia calling out kiritsugus destruction with destruction rhetoric as flawed while he criticized accurately the historical penchant to glorify battle to viel the cruelty of war and the actual human cost.
But in the end they were the same. Two people who just wanted to save all people and had themselves molded by reality instead going back to fsns thematic building blocks

This dynamic is really one of Zero's biggest selling points for me! I think Zero specifically nails a lot of interpersonal relationships between servants and masters, and out of all of those I think Kiritsugu and Saber are the most interesting to examine from both a character writing standpoint and a thematic standpoint.

As a note or rather clarification remember that arturias goal in zero was always "save Britain". It didn't change to "erase myself and make someone else king cuz i suck" until final ep. Important since its a lead in to fsn. Also she goes to hill of camlann when she loses the war not throne since she's still an actual living human. Besides those minor points...excellent work! Looking forward to what u create in the future content wise!

If there's any real argument for watching Fate/Zero first, it's that you'll be able to appreciate the King's Banquet scene rather than finding it painfully frustrating

I found this Video quite interesting to watch and that you mentioned fate stay night too. But I have to say if I could say version of Arthut I enjoyed the most so far in fate would be in Fate Prototype fragment of sky silver. It's how Arthurs story plays there out and how he ultimately end up at the end of the story (but I don't think It would be kind if i told stuff about Arthur prototype if you did not read about it)

The Fate/zero spoils UBW. Is from UBW hiding her true identity, and Zero straight up telling you.

Its unfortunate that because of the niche nature of visual novels the contextual weight of how and why Arturia is how she is is lost on 95% of the fate fan base.
The banquet scene and lancelot reveal being intentional set ups for her character arc in the fate route. I always say that there is no good way to get into fate as an anime fan. Entire nuances are just lost without the right structured order of events.

I definitely agree with this. The anime adaptations of stay night (as cool as they are) don't exactly make for a strong foundation from which to enjoy the world. Fate Zero takes more time to set you up in the world and provides more context and because of that I think it is a better starting point than Stay Night as far as anime is concerned. However you do need to be willing to put up with some spoilers for the Stay Night routes. Ultimately I think that the anime may not be an *optimal* experience but for those who are willing to make certain sacrifices to avoid reading the visual novels it is a serviceable enough experience to create a long lasting fan. And who knows maybe the fans that stick around after watching the anime will change their mind about visual novels and go back to them for full context!

@@3Waifu I can totally see that view.
Its just hard to recommend zero first knowing its like watching star wars prequels first(if the original trilogy was a 100 hour long novel filled with extreme nuance and detail about world and characters lmao)
I try not to criticize the fate stay night adaptions too much as i have nostalgia for Deen stay night and the ufotable content is always polished and well produced. But i can never bring myself to say they are proper substitutes for the source material

@@MrInuhanyou123 Yeah I agree with this. They are definitely really good, but as with many adaptations the original adds so much more to the experience.

It isn’t even the niche nature of visual novels but the fact that they are hentai which is not how video games in the west are distributed towards.

I can 100% see why one would say so if they started fate zero..moved onto Deen stay night or blade works 2014 or the hf movies and got disappointed for not being sequels to fate zero

@@MrInuhanyou123 Yeah I think a lot of people may have this experience although personally speaking I'm not so sure that it was because FSN particularly let me down. I would say I prefer Zero more because it appeals to my taste a bit better than FSN. I don't really have a lot of issues with FSN and in fact I really love it, but Zero just hits all the notes I want to see in a story and hits them so well ya know!
