Kamoshida Good Character, Bad Person

- While I'm always happy to show some love to the main cast I feel that very often the villains can be left in the dust. So today I wanted to boil down exactly how well Kamoshida is written and why it makes a good fit for the first boss

I think what makes Kamoshida so effective is that not only is taking him down a lot more personal due to seeing the effects of his actions firsthand, but while only a select few people are famous artists, mobsters, CEOs and politicians, almost anyone can be a scumbag teacher who grooms and abuses students. And it’s also an issue that unfortunately happens all too often nowadays.
Especially in japan where they had 734 cases last year and that’s only the confirmed cases
This guy is the Chief Brian Irons of SMT
That thing that really made me hate him the most was that he willing wanted to ruin Joker's life just because he didn't like him for having a criminal record. Kamoshida knew that expelling this teenager, this 16/17 years old *kid* , who, regardless if he's innocent or not, had a second chance to set his life right, would literally ruin his life. And he did it anyway.
"Who cares if this guy can to change? Who cares if he has his whole life ahead of him? Who cares if he's innocent or not? I don't like his type. End of story. I can ruin this *kid's* life and will do it. Should've think about that before getting a record."
Being high on power can really make people think and act like that.
I mean, he broke (the team’s star runner) Ryuji’s leg just to get rid of the tack team and give his volleyball team (read: himself) all the spotlight. He’s about as morally bankrupt as a person could get.
@@forcelightningcable9639 what’s even crazier about Kamoshida breaking Ryuji’s leg is that Kamoshida broke Ryuji’s leg at the FEMUR. The femur is the most painful bone you can break and also your strongest bone. Kamoshida being an Olympian level athlete would know that which adds a whole other level to his hatefulness and cruelty.
Hell, the whole 'criminal record' thing in Persona 5 is already utterly batshit. Joker didn't do anything morally wrong, he doesn't *need* to change, and the only world where it makes sense is one where Japanese ultra-conformity is taken for granted.
@@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 in America he’d be considered a hero
I feel like even if you didn’t already dislike Kamoshida for what he said about Joker to Kawakami (and Yoshizawa in Royal) and the actions of his shadow, April 15th definitely made you hate him.
Yeah. 4/15 really made you HATE Kamoshida.
the only boss in the game i make suffer
It's also my birthday 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
if a villain makes you want to bodyslam them into a bed of spikes then you can say the writers did good
I also love that everyone in our group at that point had a reason to go after Kamoshida. The protagonist, Ryuji, Ann, even Morgana had beef with the guy, and they were more than willing to kill him if it had to come to that.
Kamoshida is like the perfect villian for Persona 5. The founding members of the PT all have beef with him in his arc: Joker's expulsion, Ryuji's leg and reputation, Ann becoming a victim to his sexual deviance and nearly losing her best friend, and Morgana being imprisoned by his shadow. He sets the stage for the game's themes and for what is next to come. And the craziest part if it all, he's not related to Yaldabaoth or the Anti-social group, he's literally just a guy who found power and decided to use it for his own horrific benefit. No Messiah complex. No feeling that he should be the one to steer the country. Just a guy who did what he did because he saw the exploitation.
I will never forget the third will seed boss of Kamoshida’s castle. That weird looking thing that reminds us of that part of the body. Y’know it keeps targeting Ann?
it's called slime mara, and it's completely intentional
also I love how it's short
@@Xman34washere I did not see that coming.
You can hear his lines near the will seed rooms. One of them is: “Shake it for me Suzui.”
@@waves2378 what the fuck I didnt notice😂
Kamoshida's character is what elevates the first Palace so much. Even though a large portion is tutorial, I don't mind because you still feel like you progress towards stopping this man.
seriously there are not so many ppl who realize that the start of p5 is really a good one compared to the previous persona games, hell even of the entire megaten franchise I say. Never have I hated a fictionnal charcter so much lmao, and that prooves that Atlus did their job. Nice Video, can't wait to see what you have to say about nocturne.
I do agree. I can't even remember what happened in beginning of Persona 3
@@BitchChill Legit. The real story of Persona 3 literally begins in december 😂
Seeing that students in the treadmill in the castle, is like the perfect representation how I felt about sports in school.
He feels like the most realistic villain. We didn’t all know a corrupt politician or a mafia boss, but we all knew that one creepy teacher
Oh yeah....had one in Middle School.
I'd say Madarame and Okumura are pretty realistic too, since they're essentially Yusuke and Haru's abusive parents or mentors or other big leading figure
@@F1areon idk about Madarame. Letting a woman having a stroke in front of your eyes just because of jealousy feels odd
@@tart06tron91 Yeah, but if you're disabled or chronically ill in some capacity (a la Yusuke's mom) and depend on a caretaker, and you get REALLY unlucky and are stuck w/ an abusive or neglectful one, then... things can get ugly REAL fast.
Kamoshida is an excellent first villain for the Phantom Thieves to deal with. Not only is he abusing his power, he' really not that important in society at all. All he really brings to the school is his record as an Olympian at one point. He's a has-been athlete on a power trip.
However, that very same power trip directly affects the characters in horrifying ways so there is absolutely no way we wouldn't want to take him down and take immense satisfaction out of doing so. In Royal he's also the very person's downfall who sets up the final part of the game altogether.
Dr. Maruki is only ever brought in because Shujin wanted good PR after Kamoshida's public confession. Dr. Maruki being brought in and him getting to know Joker is what leads him to finishing his research and putting him in a position where the third semester happens.
Kamoshida's very simple mindset and overal repugnant behavior is what directly leads to the morally grey philosophical debate in the final stretch of the game.
I think the thing he has almost every other villan is that we see how his actions effect people, Shiho's suicide, Ryuji's leg, and every other student who was physically abused is seen by the player. For Yusuke his suffering was mostly mentally, Makoto isn't really hurt herself that much by Kaneshiro, Futaba brought most of her pain onto herself, Okumara's overworking was somewhat seen in his palace, Haru's Fiance hurt morgana and grabbed haru who for Morgana most people had some sour feelings to him at the time so weren't as heartbroken, and Haru didn't suffer that much from him. Shido screwed akechi's life over and screwed up ren's life. But ren's suffering wasn't that delved into since he's the protagonist, and Akechi is only really hurt on screen by his shadow self who was made by Shido, but even that his nothing to how horrific it was to witness Shiho's attempted suicide
I agree with this comment mostly but the “Futaba brought most of her pain onto herself” bit is a bit insensitive imo and entirely ignores her character arc. Not only was she blamed for her mother’s death to the point where she believed it to be her fault, as well as suffering from depression and borderline schizophrenia, but was forced to live with an abusive uncle that barely took care of her until Sojiro came along. So the only thing she really brought onto herself was being a shut-in, which’s largely understandable due to the terrible and traumatic stuff she went through.
The shiho suicide scene made me realize that Persona 5 is more than just another JRPG.
Ren’s life was ruined because of shido, and we see him remembering scenes from when they confronted until he remembers completely, and we go to his palace. And watching all the people suffering, I mean his group, must be hard for him too since the cases are similar, but he hasn’t made justice for his injustice until the end. Ren had to wait almost 8 months to finally change shido’s hearts. And also morgana is probably traumatized because of the thought of what he is, a cat, a shadow or a human and his reason to exist, and he is constantly trying to convince everyone he is a human, even though he’s not. Many people seem to miss morgana as a group member with problems, and view him just like that annoying tutorial that makes you go to sleep, when he also has problems that can be applied to the real life like the purpose of life or if he deserved to be born in the first place.
"Futaba brought most of her pain onto herself" is just blatantly wrong. She was a kid who literally got a bunch of grown men and women screaming "It's your fault", "You killed your mom", and "Murderer" at her. Hammering all that into a mentally vulnerable child in shock of her mom dying was not Futaba's fault in the slightest.
Shido was responsible for everything, even very very loosely Kamoshida.
After shiho tried committing suicide that when this man truly became a villain. Ann refused him so he made Shiho take her place. and we all know how he views them because of their cognitions in his palace, so we know what he actually did to her... so it feels fucking great when you make that rat grovel on the ground for forgiveness, and the scene where Ann almost kills him and you can see the rage in her eyes is amazing
One thing that I also appreciate about Kamoshida’s characterization is (presumably) the reason WHY he’s so instantly hatable. The plot builds up Kamoshida in a lot of subtle ways that the player doesn’t really need to pay attention to, as opposed to other villains later in the game that have more psychological complexity behind their motives and actions. The beginning of Persona 5 can already be overwhelming with all the brand new concepts, mechanics, characters, etc. being introduced, so having a the villain be simple, yet effective, is probably the best choice for not overwhelming the player, and Kamoshida does this really well.
Oh yeah so awesome! Kamoshida had my number one spot as the best villain before the third semester.
His castle is like Yanderedev's discord server
P5s first ark instantly catches you’re interest I was not so determined to finish a dungeon since heaven in P4 and its all thanks to how well they build kamoshida as a villain
i’d love to see a series about the motivation, personality, and mind behind villains in p5
For me Kamoshida is still one of my favourite villains on p5 despite most of the other villains doing arguably worse stuff and getting more fleshed out. Kamoshida’s area of effect is quite small compared to the other villains, yet this works well for the game as it makes the conflict very personal to the player. Kamoshida immediately gives bad vibes from the moment you meet him and is even worse to the player when you first talk to him, as well as being horrible to Ryuji, Ann and Shiho who are the first people that are nice to joker when he first comes to the new school. Compared to the other villains he also gets little developed outside of just being the bad guy, which further makes the player hate him as the game doesn’t give any good reasons why he’s doing what he’s doing, because really there are no good justifications you could give for his awful actions. For me personally this all makes kamoshida easy to hate, making him a well written character and an amazing villain to start with in p5.
I was in the same mental boat as the Phantom Thieves. I didn't want to go through with stealing his treasure if it meant killing him until a girl tried to kill herself and Kamoshida didn't give a care in the world.
To be honest, had it not been for Kamoshida's influence on the school and Ryuji and Joker's first discovery of the Metaverse, the Phantom Thieves would've never been formed.
It is very lucky that Ryuji is so flippant and done with Kamoshida that he says something like “this school is basically like Kamoshida’s palace” and that’s it
The only thing to like about him is that he's played by professional villain DC Douglass in the English version. Other than that, he's so detestable, but so damn interesting too. As a side note, Persona 5 has some of the best English voice acting in recent memory.
As good as a villain as Kamoshida is, the true best character in P5 is Pompous Customer
I'm playing through P5R for the first time right now, and HOOOOOLY Kamoshida is a fantastic villain. I don't think I've ever hated a villain in any show, movie, or game more than I've hated Kamoshida. He's not only the perfect introduction to what I'm gonna be dealing with for the next (at least) 95 hours but also just a really good villain on his own. He starts off kinda just seeming like a teacher Ryuji doesn't like, but then everything builds up and you get to April 15 when you can see how he's almost proud of himself for causing Shiho to attempt to off herself. It seems like that wouldn't make sense in the real world, but with the original idea that he's just a bad teacher at the start, it seems a lot more believable. It's telling that even though I knew pretty much all the major details of Kamoshida's arc before playing the game, I still hate Kamoshida and all the major cutscenes throughout the arc manage to get a good reaction out of me.
After reading some comments I've come to a realization about Kamoshida and the rest of the P5R villains--the interesting thing about Kamoshida in comparison to the other villains in the game is that he's one of the few that we fight... for a VERY genuine and strong reason. Not saying that none of the other villains are ingenuine or anything, but with Kamoshida, the Phantom Thieves didn't exist at first. The Phantom Thieves formed BECAUSE of Kamoshida, and BECAUSE all the current members wanted to take revenge for something that he did to them. Every other villain from then on stemmed from the Phantom Thieves going, "okay, now that we're a group of crime-fighting phantom thieves, who do we target next?"
Kamoshida's connection to the group at the time was so much more personal than any other villain. Madarame was heavily connected to Yusuke, but only Yusuke. Kaneshiro was connected to various students in Shujin, but barely connected to Makoto, as she was only connected to him superficially. Then of course there's Okumura with Haru and Shido with Akechi (and Ren to an extent) but... ultimately, most of those had an ulterior motive regarding the Phantom Thieves' popularity/infamy and trying to appeal to/fix it. Hell, even fighting Yaldabaoth was like that at first.
Aside from Maruki in Royal, Kamoshida was the only villain that had a personal connection to each of the phantom thieves, AND had absolutely no ulterior motives behind it whatsoever. There was only one goal, and that was to stop him no matter what before he makes more people suffer. To top it off, he's definitely the most realistic villain (as someone said, almost all of us know a Kamoshida), so being the first one we're introduced to is brilliant and a great way to get people hooked onto this game. Bravo, Atlus!
The funny thing is that it is because of Kamoshida that Maruki became the therapist for Shujin High School. In essence, the two most personal villains are both highly linked and also explain why being a Phantom Thief was even necessary in the beginning
Hot take: Kamoshida was the peak of Persona 5. I adore this game but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING topped that beginning Kamoshida arc. It was the darkest, rawest, and wildest boss. By far the most evil one.
Absolutely agree, nothing else in the story made me feel as disgusted and invested as this point in the game
A criticism people have about persona 5 is the villains are just cartoon villains but this happens in real life to a unrealistic degree. Kamoshida was based of on a kid that played basketball ball abuse by his gym teacher commanded suicide and the school seed there was no connection
You mean Judoka
I enjoy that for some reason all of these Palace villains are based of famous people with scandals
A great video as always. Inspecting the villains is certainly something I'd like to see more of, they definitely go underappreciated in the content making scene of this game as a whole. Honestly, comparing Kamoshida to Okumura really speaks to how great the former is and how underwhelming the latter is. Maybe it's just me, but the tone of this video felt different from the others on the channel so far, so I'm interested to see how that will pan out in the future.
Kamoshida certainly fills a role and I can see him pop up on a top ten hateable villains list but number 1 hateable still remains...
DIIIIOOOOO!!!!
loved the video keep it up !
Love your work bro, keep it up!
I don't consider Maruki a villain, but rather an antagonist
Just because he’s a bad guy, doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy
That's what he is.
I guess supposedly an Anti-villian as well
A person with Good intentions but not a good execution or solution
If you don't consider Maruki a villian you really need to rethink your values.
@@KoongYedude all he wanted to do was remove suffering. That's not a bad thing.
4:17-4:42 Probably my favorite part, great vid keep it up 👍🏻
I genuinely cannot think of many antagonists in games I've hated more than I hated Kamoshida, even when I first played Persona and never got past Kamoshida I thought he was one of the antagonists I most enjoyed beating the snot out of (have since gone back to Royal and adore it)
great video!
I feel like every one of us knows a Kamoshida, which makes the payoff even more rewarding.
This is starting to get popular
Love the videos keep up the good work! Btw what capture card do you use?
I got a theory.
The characters were wearing gekkoukan high outfits, that's a clue that he is going to make persona 3 videos. That might just be wishful thinking on my part though so don't hold me to that.
You still around doing videos? Just found the channel, great stuff.
Maybe if you're doing Nocturne related things you could discuss the various reasons in some way.
Or lemme invade your channel for some persona character discussion

To be honest, I hate Kamoshida, a lot and that's hella good. I genuinely think that he's a well-written bad person as well. I gotta give some claps and confetti to the development team for this one!
And that one Shiho and Mishima additions during his boss fight in Royal just made me want to hate him even more and just like you said, he's deplorable, but I gotta admit that Kamoshida was a good villain and I expected a villain like him to be at the end of the game!
I despised kamoshida so much that I hoped when he had a change of heart that he would end up deleting himself if you know what I mean.
Thank you
To further elaborate on the thank you, a lot of people think I’m a bad person for liking kamoshida.
@HunterkageJoestar what?
@HunterkageJoestar I didn’t make 2 comments I replied.
Most people have experienced someone like Kamoshida in their life. Atlus did a good job making you hate him very quickly.
My thoughts went from: "That guy was weird" to very quickly to: "Death would be too merciful for you, yet is very tempting."
Also, his Shadow's boss form perfectly represents how disgusting of a human he is on many levels.
He has a plush...let that sink in
Just did beat him yesterday. He is such a great first villain! Can I watch this video or are there heavy spoilers? I'm as far as I know who the second target is.
I used mods and made him feel hell
I would heal him. Then pull a yoshitsune on him. It was so fun lmao
Is this the start of a villain analysis series??? Just saying, I hope.
Komoshida has the most interesting main story line out of all storyline list in persona 5 royal.. The only thing that i dont like is the long slow phase tutorial , longer than biomutant x3.. Komoshida storyline could have been perfect if theres no tutorial slow phase involved.. It could been nice if komoshida is the second story act in the game.
KamoSHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESH-da
Yaaay my comment can kinda be seen at the end of the video Haha
Is it possible to like a character but hate them at the same time?
I love a lot of Dark souls bosses but I hated them too at the same time.
Villains
*Shows maruki*
To be honest,Kamoshida is the best villain that evokes a feelling of hate compared to the other villains in P5,it seems like the rest of them is kind of,meh...Ecxept Maruki,he's a good written one
I think the other villains could have done with more focus directed on their crimes and their effects on other people beyond what the Palace says about them.
Madarame. Show more of his negligence and living like a lord off the labour of others. If you ever read what happened with Superman’s creators, Howard the Duck’s creator or the story of Jack Kirby; you could have had a villain that makes you abhor them as much as Kamoshida because there are Madarames within the art and entertainment industries.
Kaneshiro. Frankly, they should have shown more of his mafia lifestyle and really show how much of a lowlife scumbag he is. GTA IV, Once Upon A Time In America, Snatch and Goodfellas comes to mind on how low these types of people are really. Could work as a deconstruction parody of the Yakuza series by showing that aren’t much differences between the “good guys” and the “bad guys”. Plus I’d have him be responsible for what happened to Makoto’s father.
Medjed. They were just a background threat.
Okumura. For a corporate man, he could easily overshadow the others in being a piece of shit. Especially when you read stories of people like him in real life exploiting and screwing over their workers along with their knack for dodging the law and having the Pinkertons to thuggishly carry out their orders to keep ahead of the competition. EA, Activision, Disney, Nintendo, Etc. There are CEO’s as wicked as him if not more so. Of all the criticisms P5 lobbies at Japan’s society, they were daintily attacking the corporate culture rather than brutally attacking at the artery like they did with what Kamoshida represents.
Sae. We know what her role was.
Shido. I think he should have came up more often and have more of his ruthless nature as a politician shown off. Show how cutthroat and corrupt the world of politics can be in Japan when the lights aren’t shined on their corruption.
:)
Kamoshia is great, he broke Ryuuji's leg, and I'll always like and respect him for that.
True
why do they dress like marleyans?
I don't know... Kamoshida's rapping and volleyball career is immaculate, I don't think I'd agree he's a bad person... I mean could a bad person fr spit bars like him in the pq2 opening??? I don't think so...
*whatcha gon do, whatcha gon do*
they put way to much thought into him
>hating on chadmoshida
Kamoshida is gross.
