- Kasumi is a very unique character in Persona 5 Royal, and just like her arc in the story her persona stands out as particularly unique amongst the main cast. With that in mind I really wanted to dig deep into Kasumi Yoshizawa's Cendrillon!

You forgot mentioning the clock on her chest referencing the undeniable fact, that the time comes eventually where in case of:
Cendrillon: She transforms back to how she really is.
Sumire: She will have to face her problems.
sumire having to face her problems happens to be sumire having to deal with being sumire (and not kasumi) which is nice
This also makes sense bc Sumires third persona is ‘Ella’ and she is dressed all in white holding a bouquet of flowers, implying that she is a bride.
Fun fact:
Cendrillon's chest is actually supposed to be a clock. Referencing the Fairy Godmother spell being time-limited.
Another reference to this is when the big reveal about Sumire happens, 4/12. Which is a clever way to reference the exact time the Fairy Godmother's spell ends, 12:00.

Yo, I never thought of that connection between Maruki and the Fairy Godmother. That’s insane! And just curious, but does anyone kind of wish that when Sumire reawakened her Persona it was Vanadis? I just feel like that would have helped drive home that how Sumire was accepting her own life again more

In Maruki it more like a Fairy godfather
A very depressed fairy godmother who sincerely wants the best for everyone by giving exactly what the person wants but works overtime to make a system where the system can also grant the wishes so he can be a normal nameless fairy
Couple things I've noticed with Violets personas.
1. Her evolution between her first and third persona. She starts with Cinderella, covered in ashes and soot ( sumire masked as Kasumi) to Ella, clean in a bright white wedding dress( sumire accepting her true self)
2. Vanadis, her second "trickster God" persona is a bright red similar to the maruki controlled Cendrillon. This is maybe a stretch but I've always seen the tier two trickster God personas as being more focused on the combat elements of the character ( Saiten taisei being a powerful warrior with ryuji high str, hecate the goddess of magic and Ann's jig Ma etc) so perhaps this red color signifies sumire has become stronger then she was when given power by maruki and thus a symbol of her rejection of the false reality.
I pray to the Atlus gods every night that this character isn't forgotten like P3's FeMC.
It's a completely irrational thought. They'd absolutely include her in the next P5 spin-off, be it P5 Arena or something else, but the hope for my 2 favorites Crow and Violet to make it into Strikers as non-canon DLC is practically nonexistent.
I feel you. I just want a game where all twelve Phantom Thieves can hang out and interact. Koei Techmo have said they’d like to make a sequel to Strikers, so we can only hope that this happens. Plus, FeMC showed up in Q2, so it’s not impossible!
Great video ! One last thing I'd like to add, though, I think that Kasumi can also be interpreted as having the same role as the step-sister in Cinderella. She's the one who has everything, talent, beauty and support. Of course, all of that is seen from Sumire's point of view.
I think the idea of something of a warped fairy godmother creating a warped princess is quite an interesting lens to use to describe the relationship between Maruki and Sumire, especially considering her story is in a lot of ways a warped version of Cinderella's. She had great opportunities and a loving family, yet felt inferior and depressed. She had a sister who loved her, and a sister she loved. She hated losing part of her family, inverse to how Cinderella wanted nothing more than to escape hers. She even has something of a prince in Joker, who helped her find herself, even if Sumire isn't as lustrous or perfect as Kasumi, and is liberated in part by her love for Joker, whether or not they actually date, and it's a very nice sentiment even if it felt a little contrived. I think this is a great video exploring how Cendrillion connects to Sumire and her story, and as always I'm excited for what's next! Keep doing what you're doing, you're one of my favorite UA-camrs!
Ah yes my favorite persona in Royal right next to Hereward.
I have to hand it to the designers and writers over at Atlus for making Cendrillon really well. Even if you're only acquainted with the Disney version of Cinderella, it's possible to pick up on the symbolism. It also helped that my knowledge of French helped me immediately equate Cendrillon with Cinderella. What first tipped me off with Kasumi/Sumire was how the Faith card representing her was clearly reversed up to that point, and how there were only 5 ranks for her confidant. It all indicated that there was something incomplete, and that was completely true. I think it all really came together for me around when Sumire "reawakened" to Cendrillon. That scene, for me, was one of the biggest narrative payoffs in the whole game because of everything the game did to show you what was going on with Sumire, and then she finally breaks through that barrier that was blocking her growth. I especially noted the dialogue Cendrillon gives in her canonical appearances. In Sumire's first awakening, we see Sumire confront a cognitive version of herself that is telling her she must do something, likely accept her true identity, which is then destroyed by a shadow and labeled "heresy" against Maruki's will and lashes out at her. We also see feathers fall from above, and voices talking down about "Kasumi". "Kasumi" then stands up and reaffirms that she IS Kasumi Yoshizawa and she cares less about her reputation and more about their dream (that last part is important). Cendrillon then says, "So adamant... Rather than accept a life in cinders... You'd strive towards splendor- you know the risk... Well, if those really are the shoes you've chosen... Then we'll dance to the end." She then tears off the mask that appears (note that she does this painlessly, without the usual blood) and then goes through a much more showy Sailor Moon style transformation. Cendrillon continues "I am thou, thou art I... Accept this contract... The spell cast upon you..." This symbolizes Sumire realizing that even though she thought Kasumi was great, she still had problems while being in a supposedly more privileged position (the "spell" didn't make all her problems go away). She asserts her identity as Kasumi, essentially using the image of her sister she built up in her head as a persona (in every sense of the word it is "a mask worn to weather the hardships of the world"). Later on when Maruki controls Sumire and makes Cendrillon go berserk, Cendrillon remarks, "No, I... I can't... I don't want to go back to my life in cinders, ever again! I refuse to go back! I'm happy here... THIS is where I belong! I refuse to return! I will never go back to being such pathetic, soot-coated garbage!" And upon defeat: "Ah... I can hear them... The bells of midnight are tolling... Now, my dream won't be... The clock strikes midnight." These lines here really give away the parallel you're supposed to draw between Sumire and Cinderella. I don't think i need to spell out what these mean when the game basically tells you. Though I would again note that Cendrillon says "Now, my dream won't be..." In the "reawakening" or "true awakening" I opt to include Sumire's own words because this is written more like a conversation Sumire has with Cendrillon. "Please, stay back! I appreciate it, but allow me. I chose to stand on my own and fight. It's time I stopped being helpless! I hung my head low and took your hand... But I knew all along deep down... Pretending to be Kasumi was not the right way... The weak, insecure Sumire... dies today!" (She then rips off her mask, struggling this time, and revealing a bloody face underneath) "You were the one... the only one who stayed true to yourself! Come, Cendrillon! If you don't answer my call now... How else can we make our dream come true!?" Now Cendrillon speaks: "Such tenacity... It seems to fit you better than ever before... The glass slippers are the icon of glory... [Cendrillon is reaching down towards Sumire but after the camera shifts she is replaced with what I assume to be Sumire's cognition of Kasumi, Sumire is shocked at first but takes her sister's hand] Not just for you, but the other girl within you as well... I am thou, thou art I... Are you prepared for your debut? The ball awaits." "Certainly! That's it... I'm done running from myself! Yes! Let's do this, Cendrillon!" After the fight there is also the moment when Sumire's confidant is unlocked again that is read out in her voice rather than Lavenza's, follows a slightly different structure, along with the Faith card being changed back to its face up position. This is huge for so many reasons, but I'll try to hit the ones that stick out to me most. The way I see it, Sumire's biggest motivation in life is to achieve the dream she and her sister had, which is to be highly accomplished gymnasts (Cinderella's dream was to go to a fancy ball and fall in love with someone who she can marry to leave her harsh life). After losing her sister, she thought she couldn't achieve that dream anymore (Cinderella faces the reality that she can't go to the ball). Until Maruki showed up that is (playing the role of fairy god mother), and actualized her into Kasumi, who she believed was stronger and more confident than her, and could achieve that dream without a sister by her side (granting her wish). Everything Sumire does is informed by that purpose, which is why she readily accepts the solution Maruki gives to her, since she could not see any way forward as herself. But as she learns from Joker (the prince who sees Cinderella for who she is in this circumstance, highlighted especially in the 1 on 1 fight you have before Maruki takes her over), being Kasumi is running from her problems, not truly solving them, and eventually Sumire comes to terms with this completely. Her initial awakening really shows how Sumire is avoiding her pain and wants to live in more of a fantasy than truth, with her mask painlessly being removed, and her transformation being less gritty and more "happy" like it's in an episode of Sailor Moon. Cendrillon says that Sumire is "adamant" in this moment and alludes to Sumire's identity being her choice (it is possible Sumire could have rejected this identity instead in this moment). This is contrasted by her other awakening, in which she struggles to remove her mask and the camera holds on her bloodied face for much longer than many of the other awakenings. She desperately calls out to her persona, and is answered this time when she remembers her dream. Cendrillon now comments that Sumire has "tenacity" which is slightly similar but separate from adamance (suggesting that Sumire was first adamant in her desire to achieve her dream as well as to be Kasumi, but her will has now changed into tenacity because she is now able to stand on her own as herself to accomplish that goal). Sumire also has a moment in which she is face to face with her sister again and seemingly accepts her. The way this scene is laid out and the implication in Sumire's words leads me to believe Cendrillon is actually Sumire's conception of Kasumi manifested as a persona. This is how she can awaken to Cendrillon despite the fact that she has not actually accepted her "true self", because Cendrillon wasn't ever truly Sumire, rather the idealized version of her sister built up in her mind. Her true awakening then is about Sumire coming to terms with her identity. It's not to reassert that she isn't Kasumi, she already accepted that (she even said herself she always knew deep down it wasn't right to try to be Kasumi), but because she no longer believes she is Kasumi, Cendrillon can no longer manifest since Cendrillon IS Kasumi in Sumire's mind. It is to accept that she is the one who embodies their dream now, and in doing that, she has taken some parts of Kasumi into herself, allowing Cendrillon to return because Sumire accepts that Kasumi is still a part of her. The way the Cinderella story is interwoven into Sumire's character is pretty brilliant, and I probably still could have mentioned some more things, but after actually going over the important story scenes Sumire is really good even without the Cinderella symbolism, and with it, it just makes her and her persona phenomenal.
Well holy shit this comment took way too long to write, hope you were able to digest that wall of text in one sitting. After writing this I think Sumire has moved up in my personal ranking of Persona 5 characters.
Considering the fact that the slipper is broken at a point in the Cinderella tale,i interpret that Cendrillon's glass dress and clothing in general represents how fragile is that illusion that Kasumi have,and the fact that she'll still be accepted as herself

On a more serious note, i originally didn't quite see the point in giving cendrillon to sumire... until i thought about it more and realized how genius of a decision it actually was. Living a new dream life thanks to magical influence - that's what happened to cinderella and to sumire. The overall theme of rebellion in the p5 casts personas is also present - cinderella rebelled against the oppression of her step-family by going to the ball. Really, cendrillon is a much better persona than i had originally thought.
Also neat detail, you find out Sumire has been pretending to be Kasumi on January 2nd, written as 1/2. So her fantasy ends at midnight.

Keeping in mind that in p1, ame-no-uzume can remove her clothes, personas clothes are like real clothes so personas might very well have skin
I was honestly pretty surprised to see that Cendrillon actually had the most voice acting of any of the Personas among the Thieves and even Azathoth. She even threw in a fair number of hints in her false awakening, about a spell being cast upon Sumi and how she'd rather strive towards splendor despite the risk rather than live in cinders. When she goes berserk, you can feel the sheer amount of pain and desperation in her voice and see just how badly she starts freaking out about not wanting to "go back to [her] life in cinders," repeatedly screaming many similar things throughout the battle with her. She almost sounds like she's stumbling between malice and simple blind panic.
Cendrillon knew the whole time that something wasn't right with her user, and cracked under the pressure when Maruki tried to bring them both back under his control. She started out as a kind and intrigued Persona until Azathoth made her flip out and effectively severed her link to Sumi when she'd need help the most. Thankfully, at the moment of the true awakening, she returns back to normal, this time fully accepting of Sumire's new resolve as her true self.
In actuality, Cendrillion died right then and there the moment the link was completely severed. The Cendrillion we see after the fact is actually just Kasumi's spirit taking the form of Cendrillion and acting as Sumire's strength, something that has only happened once before with one of the protags of Persona 1.
I’d love to see your take on the whole satanael and yaldabaoth fight. Kinda how god’s in the SMT world show order and control and demons are moreso free will. Super cool symbolism that i’ve only seen a few vids on (though there should be tons about it IMO)
*not really fight just the god like demons you fight on your way up to him along with how the end game demon class monsters kinda all counter them

It’s really cool how many similarities there are between Sumire’s story and Cinderella’s. An obvious one being her dance with Joker (the Prince) at the school festival (the ball) whilst she still believes she’s Kasumi (the spell of the Fairy Godmother).
However, it’s really interesting how far Sumire tries to deviate from the Cinderella story, especially when she reveals who she is, only to be punished. This maybe reading too much into it but it seems that when Sumire dropped her good luck charm this was meant to be a glass slipper type moment. Joker and Morgana try to return the good luck charm to Sumire (the Prince and his men looking for Cinderella). They meet her at Maruki’s Palace where Sumire has the chance to come to terms with her real self as well as revealing herself to Joker. Because she doesn’t want to return to her real self, Sumire continues to live through the façade of her being Kasumi. The spell has to end and it is done so by everyone’s favourite, Maruki. Instead of Sumire following the traditional Cinderella story of revealing herself on her own terms, she instead was exposed as a fake because she chose not to accept reality.

Only Persona could make Cinderella look like a badass. Sumi is one of my favorite characters and Cendrillon is very well designed

There is a lot of symbolism, such as the spell breaking 1/2, or Sumire losing her amulet (crystal shoe) and the prince (Ren) looking for her to return it to her, and many many more
Atlus has worked very lovingly with Sumire and Maruki.
Even with Hashino's departure it seems that the Persona saga has fallen into good hands.
Sumire and Maruki are, for me, the best developed characters in the game, and it's not easy because all the characters are great in one way or another.

when Kasumi awakens to her persona Cendrillon's voice is harsh and aggressive. She pulls off the mask with no effort, no blood, and is magically changed into the outfit of her rebellious will.

Maruki as the fairy godmother casting a spell on her is spot on
Then when Sumire awakens Cendrillon's voice is soft and gentle. It's hard for Sumire to rip off the mask, with a lot of blood. Also her persona doesn't emerge immediately once the mask comes off unlike everyone else, showing just how hard it is for her to be her true self after so long.

I always prefer to call her sumire but obviously can’t because spoilers lmao. I love her story so much and helping her as she struggles out of her shackles always feels great.
Of course my first playthrough of Royal I went with Ann, best girl from BASE P5. But when I reached the moment that Sumire actually confessed to Joker I felt so fucking bad turning her down. So I started NG+ immediately with the goal of dating her lmao.
But it’s already been over a year since I started NG+ and I think back in July I got to Okumura’s palace again and stopped there. I gotta keep going.

I have a theory on how her persona whent berserk: when she awakened her persona she was Kasumi but when she rejected herself as Sumire her persona was trying to revert to a shadow but her desire to be Kasumi try's to make her persona stay it reacts to be a shadow and a persona at the same time combons with Maruki giveing Cinderella his power or the distorted energy of Mementos (not sureon that part) make Cinderella go into a rampage. Just what's I think that happened in that fight.

Hmmm...maybe some backstory one goemon. I don’t know a lot about him so I would love to see what he is about.
Fun fact: Disney's Cinderella dress is not blue in the original 50s version. It was slightly turned blue in VHS and other modern copies of Cinderella and finally, Disney turned her dress blue in marketing, merchandises, cross-overs and appearance in other medias as blue because the original dress, silver looked like a wedding gown.

Great video, it's really amazing the amount of detail Atlus puts in their character designs. But there's one question I have, why is it called cendrillion, and not cinderella? Is it just another name for cinderella that sounded cooler?
So I also had this question starting out and I meant to include it in the video but couldn't find a place for it to go. In some of those historical versions of the story I mentioned at the beginning of the video she is referred to as Cendrillon. This is mostly in the French versions if I remember correctly but that may be inaccurate so don't quote me on it specifically.

Quand un américain me sort que l’adaptation la plus connue de cendrillon est celle de Disney à l’instar de notre Charles Perrault national... Grosse recherche.
While it is true that Perrault's version of the Cinderella tale was massively influential, I feel that it would be rather pedantic and silly to claim it as the most popular version of the story in a modern context. The words "in a modern context" are incredibly valuable here because this analysis hinges modern interpretation and the modern cultural landscape. Persona 5 was written and consumed by people born in our generation, and as unfortunate as it may be, Disney has created a much more widely known product than the original it was adapted from.
Now don't get me wrong I'm not rushing to defend Disney here or anything like that but I wish to provide a little context into the meaning of my video. This is not me claiming one version stands above the other as more or less important. Rather I am stating that for most people who play the game and hear the name "Cinderella" the Disney version is likely what springs to mind unless they have some prior knowledge in the subject. Admittedly I am not French, although I would wager that Disney's multinational empire has fully extended into the French market and managed to sell more movies than an author from the 1600s. While this *could* be wrong (and that's a big if) I would argue that even if all of France was somehow unware of the Disney version, globally speaking it has become the most popular and highest grossing version of the fairy tale, and because of that it is particularly relevant to my analysis.
I hope this clears things up a little bit, and I'm sorry if I misunderstood your comment, I don't speak French and as such I must rely on flawed translations through google. However I'm fairly sure I got the gist of what you were trying to say. I don't write this with any malice or ill intent rather to open the discussion and interact with my viewers!

In your opinion if Maruki's actualization was broken early before Sumire awakened to her persona, would she still have Cendrillon as her initial persona and if not what could have been an alternative persona? Also will you tackle the first awakening persona of the pts (eg seiten tensei anat and hecate) in terms of what their design convey?
I've definitely got plans to look at some of the first awakening personas in the future! As it stands I'm not going in any particular order or anything just what ever personas you guys request and which ones of those I feel I can make a good video out of! As for the first question I'm really not sure I think it all has to do with what her arc would then become and what literary/historical figures would be applicable to that arc.
That is a very good question. Vanadis is a good persona but doesn't really fit with the other thieves initial personas being a goddess. A bit of a gripe I have is how violet's outfit and Vanadis heavily resemble joker's and arsene respectively. Since sumire's character arc is about accepting herself as her own person I think it would have fit better if she had a more personal design. Any ideas what her thief outfit would have looked like?
@@dantegrimm6439 in the fanfiction True duet, they made Sumire's metaverse outfit similar design as in the game except its all white. Granted Kasumi is still alive in it and Sumire is more independent from Ren. I sort of find the Vanitas and Arsene resemblance odd because there is no way Sumire would have seen Arsene because by then he doesn't even use that persona anymore.

When they made violet and Vanadis look the way they did, I understand why some point thought sumire would end up being the female main character like they did in the p3 remake. Have you seen MetalBlade5's video on sumire's character and the changes he would have made? I really like his ideas: Maruki's actualisation is slowly wearing off throughout the confidant causing little bits of sumire to leak through, also she awakened her persona when she refuses Maruki's attempt to turn her back into "Kasumi". I personally think sumire's character fell flat in execution but this could have made it better.

Could you do Necronomicon? I have no idea what connection it has to futaba so im curious.
Futaba is one of my absolute favorite characters! definitely got stuff in the works for her!
According to Lovecraft's fictional history of the book, the Necronomicon, aka Kitab al-Azif, is written by "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred. The book is often referred to as the "Book of the Dead", not to be confused with Egypt's book of the dead. The Necronomicon is only ever hinted at throughout Lovecraft's stories and the events surrounding the book is often shrouded in mystery and unseen, otherworldly horror.
As for its connection to Futaba, she awakens to her power when she accepts her shadow self that it was not her fault that her mother, Wakaba, died and that she has to look for the truth. Wakaba is the "Book of the Dead" connection to the book and Futaba's search for the truth of her mother's killers another connection as the Necronomicon contains vast amounts of knowledge yet it is always shrouded in mystery. You can also look at Futaba's personality as another connection that Futaba's tendency to shut herself in/hide away from the world, is a play on the Necronomicon being hidden in the world of Lovecraft's stories.
Futaba's second persona, Prometheus, is a Titan in Greek myth that defied the gods by stealing fire and giving it to man as civilization. This refers to Futaba's will of rebellion resolved to the max and parallels Futaba's search for the truth but takes it a step further by her using her skills change society.
Her third persona, al-Azif, is part of the original Arabic title of the Necronomicon. al-Azif is like Futaba's first persona but the difference is she comes full circle and renews her promise to Joker after Maruki's ideal world made Futaba lose her purpose to rebel.

Cendrillon is a very good persona like most of the ones in the game, however I found sumire underwhelming as a character. I think MetalBlade5's video on her would have worked out better. Especially where sumire would have awakened to cendrillon when she refuses Maruki's attempt to turn her back into "Kasumi". However great video on the persona. Do you plan to do anymore videos like Akechi's duality, showing the progression and relationship between a character's personas?
Absolutely! Akechi's Duality was a really fun video to make and I'm looking forward to doing more like it!
On further consideration, I think sumire should have had a fake awakenening to cendrillon in October and awakened to her true persona Ella in january. The fairy godmother turning Cinderella into a princess for the ball can be seen as a parallel to maruki turning sumire into kasumi.
Originally it wasnt glass, disney's translator was just high as fuck.

If we're sticking to the Disney version of Cinderella, it's most likely the fairy godmother's doing in which she allowed the shoes ,and nothing else, especially after falling off to stay after midnight so a) the prince can find Cinderella, b) the story can move along, and c)it's a children's fairy tale, it ain't gotta be complicated.
Basically, how the glass slipper falls off her feet and how they also stay after midnight is a plot hole that just for the sake of the story should just be left unanswered.
Granted, it was a night of dancing, there has to be some sweat to allow the slipper to fall off. Especially considering it’s glass, it has to be somewhat loose or else it would be very uncomfortable, since it can’t stretch to fit the foot well

This video for me was like "add salt to the wound" because in my second run playing Persona 5 royal I felt bad for rejecting Sumire for not cheating on Makoto.
