    I had to watch this when I saw the title as I first started using the term "chicken coop core" a couple of years ago when my daughter moved to a small country town with some land and chickens and I began sewing and knitting her a chicken coop core wardrobe. Of course, she thought it funny when I told her that someone else is now also using the term. Thanks, great video and while I have made a couple to the patterns you have talked about, there are a few more I'd love to make

    I’m new to knitting (started in November) and have made a few beanies, a few socks, a sweater and I’m half way through a cardigan. I’ve never made a summer garment. I really love the look of the love letter top by Veronica Lindbergh. Her designer photos are so great. A knitting channel I watch just made it in red and I love how it looks, but whenever I watch people’s year in review videos they say how bad their cotton knits fit and how much they stretched. Lots of people seem to say they are done making summer garments and are going to stick to sweaters and cool weather items because they wear them way more often. I’m thinking of maybe using a cotton wool blend on a tank… anyways, I’m very torn if it will be worth it in the long run. The bralettes you shared might be a good low stakes, fast summer knit to try out some different yarn compositions. Thank you for this video. It was the first I’ve seen on your channel!

    • @sarahs.handmakes
      @sarahs.handmakes 13 днів тому

      Thanks so much for watching! A bralette will be quick and a great way to try out summer fibers. I also always recommend looser summer garments with some positive ease or neutral ease so that they don’t stretch as much! I’m not sure if the love letter top has positive/neutral ease but it would help! And doing a wool blended summer fiber also sounds like a great idea.

    Just loved this!Thanks for another great video. I had never heard of the Tomato Girl aesthetic before and enjoyed learning about it. I like bright colors and love a pop of color cardigan. Everything Petite Knit does looks great on her. Just about everything I knit and crochet could be said to be for summer as I am allergic to wool. Just finished a silk shawl and about to begin a top down v neck vest in cotton.

    I love the fact that you actually made something with that little skein! I never know what to make with the little skeins / am scared to 'waste' the yarn, so I end up not using my early spun yarn... I think you picked it up really quickly too, it definitely took me longer than a few months to learn to draft properly. (I'll also say that if you get a wheel or an e-spinner, practising on that will help you improve much quicker. At least it did for me! And it'll be much easier on the shoulders. Another option that's sligtly more affordable could be a supported spindle. You can spin that in a bowl on your lap or to your side, and draft sideways instead of up. Still taxing for the shoulders, but I find it a bit easier on my body. (Or even learning the medieval way with a distaff and an in-hand spindle, that way your shoulder doesn't have to go up at all!)

    • @sarahs.handmakes
      @sarahs.handmakes 16 днів тому

      Thank you for the encouragement and advice! I am looking into a mini e-spinner now to make it easier on my body. I’ll also have to try to find a supported spindle. It sounds like you have a lot of experience so thanks so much for sharing!

    Smaller projects with your first skeins of homespun yarn makes a lot of sense to me. I imagine the learning curve is steep at the beginning. SO the next 40 yards of yarn might be s significantly different quality from your first 40 yards. Which is a good thing. Though it also means that using them in different projects might also be a smart plan. This is so inspiring! I'm started to weave and sew recently: I want to make my own clothing. I have considered learning how to spin, if simply to better understanding yarn and how to work well with it. Thank you for posting your journey! I'm a lot more likely to give it a try now! It seems like a deep and complex task at first. But the more you learn, the more simple and shallow it becomes. And the easier it is to make something of your own work!! I'm currently weaving s scarf for my niece, and I'm having so much fun with it too!

    a few of my knitting group friends have started spinning and it's making me want to try it. it's amazing to see the progression from the first go to what you ended up with. one thing holding me back is that i have a lot of back and shoulder pain already from a chronic injury and i worry that spinning would aggravate it but i guess basic spindles aren't overly expensive so i could just give it a go.

    • @sarahs.handmakes
      @sarahs.handmakes 20 днів тому

      Oh so fun! I’d be very careful with spinning if you have a shoulder injury. I’m hyper mobile in my shoulders and it definitely caused me some pain if I did it for a while! But it’s really fun to try and not too expensive. As long as you take frequent breaks, you should be ok! And it’s so satisfying

    I totally get being discouraged by not getting done what you wanted to, but planning to make 7 FOs in 3 months, 4 of which are garments seems like a pretty high goal unless you are able to knit 40+hours a week. Having realistic goals definitely helps with not getting as discouraged!

    Thank you for your video. You should 100% still knit the Twist Loop Top, it is beautiful. I think knitting is very personal and so you should focus on what you would enjoy knitting and wearing and not worry about whether the pattern is suitable for someone else. It is your personal knitting journey, do what makes you happy 😊 have a lovely summer!

    Twist loop top is very beautiful and I don't know any similar patterns to recommend. My opinion is that most people will find the size for themselves and your podcast will be helpful. We can't be perfect both as knitting designers and podcasters, so if you like this top, knit it and enjoy the finished object. I will be knitting this top as well and I look forward to your FO.

    It's hard to get used to a different (slower!) pace of knitting, isn't it! I find it so difficult! At the same time I'm happy I am able (again) to do more other things. 🌞

    A lot of people seemed to have problems with the highest button on their eva cardigans. Including myself- I sewed it close.

    I did a color analysis- I‘m a deep winter they told my - however I do not like that color so I go with deep autumn color schemes. 😅

    I don’t worry that much about size inclusivity. Yes consider it, but you don’t need to be married to it. Grading patterns sounds hard, I don’t understand what goes into it, but I can imagine that not all designs would grade up as well as others. Supporting her and communicating with her would help her be able to afford grading/tech editing support for her patterns. XO love your patterns! Going outside is way more of a priority for me than knitting right now. Exciting you are coming to Alaska! I am in Anchorage. Will you be going to Cordova? Enjoy your travels and casual knitting!

      Thank you so much for your input! You’re right- grading sounds hard and I don’t know enough about it. And thank you for Alaska! I’m very excited. I won’t go to Cordova but I’ll be in Ketchikan, Sitka, Haines, and Juneau!

    Speaking of seasonal plans I'm way less ambitious. I'm working on one summer tee, anything else is a bonus. On the back burner I have a sweater that was my spring project but is now a fall project. Anything else is a bonus. I am considering what my next project should be though (maybe a cardigan)😅

    i don't have any personal experience with this but i have seen other people who have added a thread of elastic to the neckline of a wrap top to stop it from sagging open. maybe that could be worth trying and i guess it's reversible if it doesn't work.

    • @sarahs.handmakes
      @sarahs.handmakes Місяць тому

      I should try that! I think that the wrap point is at the wrong point for it to not gap but it is reversible as you said!

    This really resonates with my style. The colour palette and loose knitwear over dresses with hair back in bandana/scarf is always something I end up in. Don't know about actually handling chickens though lol! I think the Soiree pattern by Emily Foden would be perfect for this look. It's oversized, with casual rolled up edges and a very comfort focused style (but still looks so pretty). Other patterns I'm thinking of are the oversized Gentle Lopi by Melody Hoffman, Chaika (wide sleeve version) by Midori Hirose, Tahka Cardigan by Sari Nordlund and the Douglas Cardi (in muted stripes or even solid colour) by Andrea Mowry. The general look of Laerke's (Fiber Tales) patterns I believe fit this vibe too and especially her upcoming, yet to be released, new cabled cardigan. Nicely put together and great look to explore.

    I feel like I'm having what I've dubbed a "frog boy spring/summer." Essentially, froggy colors (browns, greens, deep reds, etc.), and taking inspiration from frogs and their habitats. This is a recurring source of inspiration for me so I figured why not base seasonal knits on frogs? Should be fun!

      @@sarahs.handmakes well a lot of sweaters have inspired me, but specifically the Méandres by Mélina Hami. It's such a lovely color and the pattern reminds me of a yellow frog climbing into a tree. Definitely on my list of things to make!
