Question of the week: What do you think of seasonal color analyses? Would this be a useful tool to choose colors for you or a limitation on your creativity?

yay we’re color twins! i guessed as much when i saw you posted this video :) i paid for an analysis a couple years ago and actually based my garden/wildflower wedding color scheme off of the soft autumn colors! i’ve recently accepted that although pink is my favorite color, even the pinks in our palette bring out more pink in my complexion than i like to have, and that the pale beiges kind of dull me out. but i love a soft sage or dusty green :) your EKF docile is beautiful!
i think color analysis is helpful if you’re struggling with buying clothes - it’s helped me cut down on my shopping habit because i have more of a reason to pass on clothes outside my palette. it can definitely be limiting when i want to use a certain yarn that isn’t offered in one of my colors but if i only knit garments in my colors, it’s almost guaranteed that i will like the color of my finished object
Oh twins! That’s a really good idea to base your wedding colors off of your seasonal colors! Sounds like a beautiful scene. It’s interesting that you see a lot of the colors in the palette as actually bringing out too much pink or dulling you out! Do you use colors from other seasons instead?
And I really agree about color analysis helping to reduce buying clothes. It can be so nice to have limits!
@@sarahs.handmakes when i got my color analysis, they also told me i could borrow colors from soft summer but to avoid the greys/blues from their palette. i’m still trying to figure out good shades of pink for me lol but i tend to go toward muted greens and purples if i can find them! also been really into gingerbread and camel shades lately
This was super interesting!! I am really interested in doing a color analysis myself since i never know what colors to chose for the garments i knit up. I think that knowing my color season would limit the amount of options in a helpful way :)

Such an interesting video Sarah!! It's funny, I think I commented previously about how you have very similar complexion/colouring to mine, and I am also a soft autumn lol. I am not a fan of beige, so I'm borrowing quite a lot from the neighbouring soft summer palette, as well as dark autumn.
Also loved your disclaimer of how we can love some colours even if they don't love us back 😂 I most definitely agree with that! Colour analysis is supposed to be fun, not suck joy out of our personal style!
Thank you! That’s super fair on the beige! The soft autumn palette definitely has a ton of neutrals which can feel limiting so it’s smart to borrow from the other nearby seasons.
And 100% maintaining your personal style is way more important than dressing in your colors! Style is linked to so much more than our appearance and expressing our personality or dressing in ways that make us happy is always going to come before dressing to ‘suit’ or skin tone or body type or another physical feature, at least for me!
How fun! You probably don’t know this about me but I actually learned to do seasonal color analysis when I was in my twenties! I also learned to do other people’s makeup, which I loved doing. 😊 I would have guessed Autumn for you (back then I think we just did the 4 basic seasons although there were muted and vibrant tones within the palettes if I’m remembering correctly) and I’m pretty sure your mom was Autumn as well. I am supposedly a Spring, but it would be fun to do it again now that I’m older and today it’s easier to get a more specialized digital palette than the physical things we had back then. I’m not supposed to wear black, but I feel best when I wear black, 😎
Edited to add my answer to the question since I commented before I finished watching! I think color analyses can be helpful - to me it is another dimension of understanding ourselves and it can be a lot of fun to explore colors we did not know would work well with our skin tones, possibly discover colors that make us feel even better, more comfortable and confident. I think you said it well though when you pointed out how important it is to wear what makes us feel good about ourselves regardless of color analyses.
That’s really fun! I was talking to mom yesterday about the color analysis and she said you used to do them. I had no idea! It would be fun to see if your season changed over time ☺️
Belated Happy birthday! 🎂 You went in with totally the right mindset. I got my colours done in 2002, and it was around £50 including a swatch book (that was at least 60 swatches, if I find it, I'll come back and edit this post!) so I could take the swatches with me to the shops and make sure I got the 'correct' outfits! (I'm a warm autumn iirc). I did help me as a young person in the corporate world, I switched to chocolate brown and navy suits, and was no longer told that I 'looked ill'. However! Twenty years later, I have dyed hair (usually neon, hex C5FF35) and wear a lot of black or pastels - which are my worst colours, lol! And I feel awesome. You're going in the right way, giving you ideas but not restricting or defining you - and hell yeah, neon pink! The minis you have I would crochet them into décor, I'd love brightly coloured flowers, and leaves :D The blanket sounds lovely, and I can't wait to see it. :)

I also was told not to wear black by the seasonal color analysis but that’s basically the only color of pants I wear 😂 it’s definitely take what resonates and leave the rest type of tool. And neon hair is so fun!
This was very interesting!! I remember back in high school having my colors done in a sewing class, but I can’t remember what suits me best. I’m 50+ and my closet has soooo many colors and patterns-I often feel overwhelmed and not sure what colors suit me best. I have knit many sweaters from bright colors, to solids, to neutrals, still not sure what is best for me. I have a couple sweater quantities of yarn that I’m no longer sure suit me best. A color analysis might be just the thing. Thank you for sharing!!❤

I did a color analysis about 1 month ago as well. I am using it as decision support for buying yarn. I mainly buy online from indy dyers. The colors to choose from are endless, a sweater quantity is quite the financial commitment, and I wanted to know how far I could push the needle on shades of pinks or yellows or whites before it no longer works for me.
That’s such a smart way to use a color analysis! Even shopping in person for yarn, it’s so hard to tell if the tiny ball of yarn held next to your face will look good as a whole sweater. The added complexity of shopping online and the cost factor makes a color analysis even more valuable of a tool
For myself it doesn't work. I've had a color analysis twice - both times within a month, so it's not like I was in such different circumstances that would warrant a very different outcome. The first time I was very definitely a cool spring, the next time very definitely a warm autumn. The first time I should definitely not wear warm autumn colors because they would wash me out, the next time it was the other way around. If that has taught me anything it is that I just wear whatever color I like.
That’s so interesting to have the two extremes! I think you have a great approach to just find the colors you like. That’s really the best thing to do, even if you had a consistent color season. Thanks so much for watching!
