    I have been thinking about adding a couple of hmx rods to my arsenal . I love the Daiwa presso rods. I wish they came with a full grip. I have 3 okuma guide select pro rods and they are very light. The new vanford reels seem like the perfect reel. Unfortunately, they are $249. The 2024 2000 vanford is on a 1000 body. Seems like a winner.

    Appreciate the video! Thank you! That's a lot of gear to haul, and I do appreciate you're hunting in the coastal mountains. At 59 years old, I just don't have it in me anymore to carry a heavy loaded pack like that for hours upon hours away from the the truck while grouse hunting. But I strongly prefer a longer walk in the woods (or a series of shorter walks) over the idea of a 4-wheeler or truck, so that means finding a lighter-weight set of solutions. So for my pared-down "Old Guy kit", it's a 20-ga O&U, a lightweight Bird and Game knife for field-dressing the birds, a bushcraft/survival knife (Terava Jaakaripuuko 110 with Boltaron sheath and attached ferro rod), a small freezer bag of cotton balls soaked in vaseline for firestarter, a lighter, a canteen, a Browning upland vest, 15 to 20 shotshells, a snack and a wrap for lunch, a few freezer bags for grouse meat (big enough to allow wing to remain attached for identification per law), a merino wool long-sleeve shirt, a merino commando-style sweater (LL Bean) if cooler temps, and merino socks, light hiking/hunting boots, a Garmin GPS/In-Reach, iPhone, keys, wallet, and that's about it. I really try to avoid hunting in the rain unless it's going to be a very light rain shower only. I really do still need to find a good lightweight hunting rain jacket, though.

    This is nuts. This setup has been the best one ever since CNOC came up with these wide mouth opening water bags. I know I've had mine for at least 4-5 years already, and I got them because someone already presented this combination on UA-cam after having used it themselves for a year or 2, and that's even knowing back then that the CNOC water bags tended to leak (2 of the 4 I own leak) and even crack (1 of the 4 I own cracked) at the neck of the screw cap. I still keep and use them with my Sawyer minis. THAT is how old this setup is.

    What a great 14 minutes of advice and information! I'll be honest, I initially skipped this video because I did my usual preview scrub-through and saw that it was mostly you talking to the camera. That's often a sign of long-winded explanations. But I just gave it a listen on a drive and highly recommend this for new grouse hunters and occasional hunters who'd like a review. You reinforce all the key points and add a few extra tips. Thanks for your time making this.

    Great tip! Good to know there are other options to the Sawyer bags that come with the squeeze. I had 2 Sawyer bags burst on a backcountry hunt, not only leaving me without a water filter option, but splashing water into my clean Nalgene bottle. I switched to a BeFree filter using a Hydrapak Seeker 3L dirty bag, the flow rate is awesome. However, your system seems pretty sweet as well.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry 4 дні тому

      Oh no! Well obviously you made it out without dying of dehydration haha I do think the Befree has its merits but still the versatility of the sawyer is hard to beat. Whatever works tho!

  • @lukeodell176
    @lukeodell176 4 дні тому

    My strategy is the 2 gallon sawyer bag, filter, then hose. What you do is, you hang it on a tree, then balance the smart water bottle on the ground with the hose dangling in it. Then you forget about it, let it overflow, and it tips over. The final step is you just stare at it and feel shame.

    • @CascadeBackcountry
      @CascadeBackcountry 4 дні тому

    "This is a basic setup" Bro compared to my rigs you need a 12 step program and a degree to make that. I just put a dodger, about 10" of leader and my lure. 😂 But I'm also nowhere near the caliber of fisherman you are. So there's that.

    • @CascadeBackcountry

Of course, I really don’t even understand why your video popped up in my feed, but glad it did. Good luck fishing man.

    Here in the northeastern corner of Washington state, I've caught trout on every conceivable spoon pattern and shape. But the number one spoon that gets bit the most is a plain chrome spoon. Second place is a dimpled "hammered" chrome spoon. I make my own spoons now days, so I make small ones with thicker steel so I can cast better. I haven't seen the gold and red little cleo before, but now i have a new pattern to try on my home made spoons. Thanks for that. As for the little cleo rainbow in the runner up section, I've thrown mine at least a few hundred times, without a single bite.

    I was going to be 12.5 miles southeast of these lakes this weekend, but forecast for temps in the 30s and rain/snow showers made me chicken out. I feel like I got to experience it without having to do it! Seems like the lakes have thawed on schedule, but the weather is still hit and miss. Bring on July and the bugs.

I'm already planning my trip back into there for next summer though haha Thanks for watchin!
