Love your videos..I'm 63 and spent most of my pre-teen, teen, and young adult years hunting grouse with my Dad and Brothers in North Eastern WA. Now that I'm retired, I'm finally back at it with one of my 8 adult kids. We went back to our old stomping grounds and had a great time (1 rabbit, 4 grouse in the bag for a few days of hunting) I chuckled when I saw the title of this video as we experienced all week the "cow thing" too. We were on our way out when we pulled over to talk with a fellow grouse hunter we had met that week. As we parted ways and us heading out of the woods (2 mins from where we were talking), we ran into our last cow sighting in the middle of the road. We grumbled again but then saw under the cows legs, a grouse not more than 2 feet away from the other side of the cow....just sitting there picking gravel. We just laughed and said, "Well that's a first."😂
I'm glad you're getting out into the woods enjoying time the kids. The cows, every time are initially an interesting novelty but turn into a comical annoyance at some point. I'm assuming you didn't shoot the grouse UNDER the cow haha
I’m just getting into grouse hunting this year. I’ve gone up the hills near me a bunch of times. Before grouse season I would see them everywhere. Now that hunting season has started, I haven’t seen a single one. I am watching your videos for tips. They’re well made. Keep posting!
Great video bud. You got a feed for your family anyway. You had a lovely hunt and nice fire to enjoy in the beautiful mountains. Pretty peaceful except for the cows ha,ha.
Been binge watching your videos lately. Just whacked my first grouse in a few years yesterday while deer hunting in Eastern WA. Thanks for the tips!! I’m learning a lot.
The cows remind me of a hunting trip I took up by Winthrop years ago! Awesome video! After getting my first grouse last weekend, all I can think about is going out again. Your videos help me get my first grouse thank you!
Great video! Thank you! I'm right with you - I'd love to spend a lot more my time in the backcountry hunting, hiking, and just being out there with my son and my wife. Maybe I'll get to taking up fishing in my retirement if we're lucky enough to sell out place out East next year and retire back to British Columbia.
Exactly! These videos bring back so many good memories of grouse hunting back in the 70’s and 80’s. Whether you got anything or not, a day in the woods was always a good day
Nice video, great info. I hunt grouse with a tradbow only and I'd love to be brave enough to take some of those shots you take when they flush and roost but I've lost too many good arrows that way!
Grouse seem to have a compact with hunters to always always leave one of their members within 100yards of the hunters vehicle. haha Usually 80percent of the time its on the way back they show up. Funny how different the banding on the tail looks compared to the ruffed grouse here in Michigan.
I was out chukar hunting in Eastern Washington yesterday, and got into cows too. Couldn't find the open season on cows in the hunting regulations, so I left them alone.
Ruffed grouse there look a bit different than the ones we have here in Ontario, especially the patterns on the tail feathers. Would be an interesting video to explain all the types of grouse in your area, where to find each of them, size, color, type of meat, taste, etc.
three questions: 1) how fast do you walk during hunting? how long does it take to cover a mile? 2) how often do you stop on average? once in how many yards? 3) how silent should you be during the hunt?
Three answers.... 😆 1. I walk at various speeds depending on the terrain and grousey it feels. Little too much to text in a comment. 2. If it feels real grousey, I'll walk like 10 ish yards, stop and look and listen. 3. If it feels real grousey I'll "sneak" around but it's basically useless. They always know you're there haha
I am haunted by cows. Cow PTSD now probably! I am going to twitch some jigs tomorrow morning. Dunno if I'll make any videos though. You been here a long time. You know I'm pretty on and off with putting out videos. Life gets busy and my hobby has to take a back seat 😆
Going out for the first time tomorrow around the 6-800 elevation mark, doing a bunch of escouting and it looks to be a lot of intermittent swaths of trees between clear cut is that going to be solid terrain to start in?
I have applied tour tips on where to hunt grouse, I've had alot of success, thanks. Was out this morning actually, saw 2, but they were young birds, so I didn't bother to harvest then. I feel the same if I was a millionaire.
Awesome content. Thank you for sharing your hunting adventures. It really does suck to lose a grouse & you feel terrible about it.. I’ve shot them on the edge of steep slopes or perched on a limb & they get that locked wing dead glide going & their gone.. Or I swear they’ll drag themselves into a mountain beaver hole & you’ll never find them. You’ll find yourself saying aloud “Come on keep flapping so I can find you”😂 I use #4 & #5 shot so it’ll increase the odds of quick kills. Their feathers get thick in the late season & I’ve tumbled them with #8 and #6 shot & watched them flap around and fly off..
Yeah that feels crappy. They really can just disappear sometimes! I hit that guy with #7 shot, improved cylinder from like 15 yards. I think he just rolled way down thqt steep ass hill. Maybe into a hole or something
oh man your grouse look so easy to take. here 19/20 of them will run if they see you more than 100 feet off, but it's due to the moose hunters right now prowling the roads fast, they are very pressured and skittish in my area right now. Saw 21 grouse in the last two days and got zero, I'm bummed. I have gotten some though
Yeah they can be pretty dumb at times and pretty flighty at times. Sometimes it's just a numbers game. Definitely tougher when there's lot's of people cruising all over the woods!
I am 73 yrs old and I have never put on ear protection for grouse hunting or any other hunting. I see this all the time on you tube hunting shows. When I am hunting I am listening for animals which I can't hear if I am wearing ear protection. Drives me nuts watching you guys do this. No one I know who hunts walks around or stops to shot an animal and puts on ear protection. I still enjoy your videos and look forward to them just not enough of them>🤓
Most of the people that you see nowadays wearing hearing protection are using electronic hearing protection. You can hear WAYS better with them on, and they protect your ears when you light off.
I wear electronic ear pro. It allows me to hear my surroundings but protects my ears when I fire off a shot. Not sure why hearing protection is a bad thing. Thanks for watching!
No, those were ruffed grouse 100%. The one I missed in the beginning of the video was a blue grouse. Ruffed grouse have a pointy mohawk looking bunch of feathers on top their head
@@CascadeBackcountrysorry man you are wrong. Those first two bird are blue grouse. Note the black tail feathers with grey tips. Ruffed grouse have gray or brown tail feather with black tips. There are many other ways to tell but the tail is easiest. Both species exhibit a crest not just ruffed
I had to go back and look at the footage. They are indeed blue grouse!!! Thanks for the catch. When I'm out filming, it can be quite the whirlwind trying to get all the shots and put together a good video. Sometimes it results in me being in a hurry and not catching obvious stuff... like looking at the fan haha Thanks for catching that!
@JimboTheMick you do have to wear orange during any open deer/elk rifle season. Get your hands on a regulation booklet and dig into it cuz the rules can be quite confusing 🫨
If I was a millionaire, I’d do the exact same! Also glad to know I’m not the only one to loose a shot grouse. Had one fly away with my arrow inside it and couldn’t find it after an hour of searching.
@@CascadeBackcountry yeah! In short, shot two different grouse, one flew away with my arrow inside it, (field tip); and the other grouse I hit square in its chest solidly with a (Blunt Judo Tip), and it flew away unharmed. Now I’ve ordered broadheads for the next outing. When I hit my next grouse, and hopefully harvest it, do you cut out and not eat any of the bloody meat from the arrow impact? How was your recent hunt?
@@CascadeBackcountry yeah 25, I thought that would have been enough just for small game, but not I’m regretting not getting more draw strength. But with a broad head it should hopefully be fine now. Bummer that your last hunt wasn’t as productive.
I just subscribed a little while ago and took a deep dive into your channel. I have been enjoying all of your content. But I have a love/hate relationship with you. More like jealousy I guess. I’m in Oregon and all of this grouse stuff is really making me want to do that. Here in the northwest I have too many choices of things to do in nature, can’t do it all. Anyway thanks for doing what you do and maybe it’s time for me to stop salmon fishing and go chase some grouse.
haha! I hate me so don't feel too bad. I have a love hate relationship with this time of year cuz there's too much awesome stuff to do! Honestly, I used to be REALLY big into salmon fishing but I have all but stopped in order to hunt in the mountains. Hard to do both
I was hunting blue grouse and dusky grouse in this one. Different ball game. You apply the things I talk about GENERALLY but it'd be tough to do a video about every type of grouse hunting in every type of terrain. Maybe next year I will
Went out hunting for grouse for the first time the other day. Taking a bunch of tips from the channel.
How'd it go!?
Same! Took a gated Forrest road on the west side! Nice walk but now luck. I was between 600 and 900ft of elevation. Is that good or bad?
@@BilboSandbaggins the elevation is fine. More about what's along the road
