Breeding Racoon Tetra

Hello everyone! Today, I'm going to show you how I bred another new tetra, the Racoon Tetra, also known as Hyphessobrycon procyon. These fish were given to me by one of my fish-keeping friends. He wanted me to try breeding them. They are the most beautiful tetra I have kept so far, especially for the males. The males have very big and beautiful fins, which makes it very easy to sex them. And to...

Hello, everyone! This is part 2 of my attempt to breed 1000 neon tetras. I couldn't believe this attempt could be so challenging, given the fact that I have successfully bred and raised neon tetras multiple times before. Nevertheless, I encountered two failed attempts at the beginning. While it's relatively easy to get the eggs, it can sometimes be incredibly difficult to get the fry to reach t...

Ruby Tetra Breeding Attempt- Misapplication of the online tutorial?

Hello Everyone! Time to update my Ruby Tetra breeding tank. Yes, you may already know from the title that I still haven't made any progress. Hello everyone! As you can see from the title, I'm embarking on the challenge of breeding 1,000 neon tetras once again. The neon tetra was the first tetra species I successfully bred and raised. Dear Bo: I noticed that as you fed a fry, at time code 7:08, it appeared that it ate two, brine shrimp cysts, just off camera. Does consuming brine shrimp cysts cause issues, for fish? I’ve heard that it can lead to intestinal obstruction and bloat. I’m careful, when I feed live brine shrimp nauplii, to include as few brine shrimp cysts and cyst shells as possible. Separating live nauplii from such chaff is not difficult, but takes a few minutes. I’m not saying that you include too many. For years I have encouraged my, friend to separate live nauplii, but he continues to feed this, live food, incorrectly. The main tank that gets this is his guppy colony. I’ve noticed that young fish, in that tank expire, quite often and have seen some with intestines protruding, from the anus. I don’t know if incorrect feeding of brine shrimp is the cause of the issue. Thank you, for sharing this terrific, grow-out video, of this lovely species. I appreciate your work, very much. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

    Hello, did you acclimate your fish from tank conditions to conditions in the jar? I believe I lost 3 neons already due to acclimation shock from moving them from a 7.5 ph 180 ppm tank to a 30 ppm and under 6 ph tank. I had also used pure RO water for the attempts in which I had fish die, is pure RO water harmful to them?

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 13 днів тому

      Hello, thanks for your comment. I didn't acclimate my fish from tank conditions to conditions in the jar, because the water parameters in the tank are pretty much the same as those in the jar. The only difference is that the water in the jar is fresh water, which would stimulate spawning. I don't specifically adjust the pH to 6 when breeding neon tetras or even cardinal tetras, as, from my experience, they don't strictly need acidic water to spawn. Fresh water will suffice. However, acidic water might increase the spawning rate. I've only had fish deaths when breeding due to untreated chlorine. But I'd say a sudden drop in pH does shock the fish, so you need to do this process slowly, for example, by putting some pH-lowering media like catapa leaves or soft water resin into the breeding tank, like I did for the ruby tetras.

      @bothetetrabreeder8734 Місяць тому

      Hi my friend, thanks for your question. For me, I just feed them baby brine shrimp as soon as they are free swimming. The trick is that you need to put the fry in a small container, so the fry can find the BBS easily. You can see in many of the videos that my fry can eat baby brine shrimp at a very early stage (5-6 days after hatching). Another option for first food is egg yolk solution. I hope they work for you too.

  • @majorbruster5916
    @majorbruster5916 Місяць тому

    You need to feed the fry on infusoria 24 hours after hatching, otherwise the fry will starve. 21° is too low for the fry, that's why they died. Tannins in the water help keep the pH low and reduce the bacteria and fungi that attack the eggs.

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 Місяць тому

      Hi my friend. As a guy who's been breeding tetras for many years, I'm confident in saying that we need to wait at least 5 days before the fry is able to eat anything. I agree with you that a low temperature is not good for the fry, and tannins are good for the fry as well. Thanks for your comment.

      I apologize for the delayed response. I have up to 100 fry at most, and I rarely change the water, perhaps only once a month. Even when I do, I simply siphon out the snail poops at the bottom. The fry will not have any difficulties if the water is not changed for a month.I believe it is crucial to have healthy parent fish and to avoid inbreeding. Additionally, try not to disturb the fry for 5-6 days after hatching, and placing the fry tank in a quiet and dim environment may also be beneficial.

    firstly has the person who gave you the suggestion ever succeeded in breeding ruby tetra or any other species in the genus Axelrodia ? if not i dont really think that would be that accountable. secondly you have actually tried breeding your cardinal without any lighting source and failed which means that lighting source is actually quite crucial for fish during their breeding and that actually has been proven by my personal experience as well in breeding H. amandae, H. filamentosus, P. maxillaris and H. megalopterus therefore i smply dont understand why you would like to cover your whole breeding tank from getting any light again. cuz simply if you really keep the tank in a full darkness, i would say the fish would just stay in a sleep mode and never breed. thirdly, i would say if a fish pair is ready for spawning, they shall do that quickly and not doing nothing at all in an environment for longer than a couple of days. if they aint doing anything in a couple of days that simply means that either the pair is not ready or the envrionment you provide is not suitable for breeding. since you have already bred several characidae species think you should be quite aware of that. and the last is that i would say it shall always be way much mrore helfpul to ask for suggestions from someone who has had success in doing it rather than trying out random suggesetions from those that dont really have any expereince in doing it. personally i do think you could get on facebook and join some tetra breeding communities there and look for way much more constructive informaation and tips cuz i highly believe that someone there may have successfully bred the fish in capitive.

      Thanks for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment. As I mentioned in the video description, the method I used was from the website www.keepingfish.com. I can't guarantee that this method is 100% accurate, but another commenter also succeeded by covering the tanks. So I would assume he might have referenced this method as well, as this article is easily accessible on the internet. Perhaps it wasn't necessary to cover the tank for the first two days, but it could have provided the fish with a sense of calmness initially. Therefore, I would say it wasn't entirely meaningless. Moreover, the article suggests that the fish would begin to spawn after the light is gradually introduced, not during the time when the tank is covered. Searching for help on Facebook could indeed be a good idea, though I haven't been using this app for a long time. Nonetheless, I appreciate your suggestion.
