Breeding Amapa Tetra — I Thought Breeding Them Was Fairly Easy
The Amapa tetra, scientifically known as Hyphessobrycon amapaensis, is also named the red line tetra or scarlet tetra. It is a species of tetra that resembles both the glow light tetra and appears to be a close relative of the black neon tetra. I became aware of their existence a long time ago and have witnessed their prices drop from a high of 200 Chinese yuan each to the current price of just 10 yuan. I had always assumed that breeding them would not be particularly challenging. After all, the Imperial lapis tetra, which was once similarly priced high, also rapidly dropped to a similar price range as the neon tetra, and I successfully bred the Imperial lapis tetra on my first attempt. However, reality proved otherwise, as it took me over two months to finally only obtain a few infertile eggs. I even doubted whether I only had female fish in my possession. If any aquarium hobbyists or fish keepers have successfully bred them, I would greatly appreciate your advice in the comments section. Thank you!
Time Stamps:
0:00 - The Amapa tetra and the glow light tetra are two distinct species of tetras.
0:58 - I originally thought that breeding Amapa tetras would not be very difficult.
1:30 - My first attempt at breeding them.
2:14 - I purchased a new batch and made my second attempt.
4:19 - Third attempt: Fattening up the Amapa tetras by feeding them live foods.
5:25 - Third attempt (continued): Triggering them to spawn by lowering the acidity level.
6:20 - Performing water changes as a stimulus.

    Dear Bo: I anticipate you will soon have good success breeding amapa tetra (Hyphessobrycon amapaensis). You are going to great lengths, to provide everything necessary, for this process. I recently put all of my, black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi), in a 30-gallon long tank, at Charles’ house. I have only two, heated tanks, at my house and neither seemed ideal, for black neons. They tend to gobble up the food, before my betta can get it, in my, 29-gallon tank. Blue, male Endler’s livebearers go well with forktail rainbowfish (Pseudomugil furcatus), in my 75-gallon, CO2-injected tank. But, black neon tetra would stand out, there. I’m trying to avoid having a “Noah’s ark syndrome,” in any of my scapes. I was wondering if black neon tetra would do well, without a heater. My, unheated 75-gallon tank is nearly ready for me to put fish back in it. I had to break it down and start over, as the tank was infested with Malaysian trumpet snails (Melanoides tuberculata). Now, the only plant, in that tank is jungle vallisneria (Vallisneria Gigantea); but it is doing well; even propagating. The water is still very brown, with tannin. With numerous water changes, this will be reduced. However, I may stick with my plan to populate the tank with Gabon killifish (Aphyosemion gabunense). I’ve had good success, breeding them. Thank you, for posting this, breeding attempt video. I look forward to seeing your progress breeding Hyphessobrycon amapaensis. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

      Thanks, Brinegar, for your encouragement on my attempt to breed amapa tetras. I think I have taken all the possible steps I can think of to make these fish spawn. If I had used these methods for other tetras, I would already have fry. It is very possible that all of my 10 amapa tetras are female. I have already ordered 10 more smaller ones, hoping that at least half of them are male. For your black neon tetras, although they are very hardy, we should keep them in a heated tank. I must say that fish keepers often face this problem: never having enough tanks to accommodate all the fish. I am also struggling to find space for my tetra fry, as I have many breeding projects ongoing. I think I will soon succeed with the amapa tetras. What bothers me most is still the ruby tetras, which I have been trying to breed for over a year. Thanks for your continued support!

    Hi Bo, Greetings from Costa Rica. In the next months I want and will attempt to breed Cardinal tetra, I wanted to know if there is a reason why you prefer not using peat moss as a substrate to hide the eggs from parents, also how do you prevent fish fry dying from getting to close to a heater?

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 22 дні тому

      Hi my friend. It's a bit expensive for me to buy peat moss, and I feel like breeding cardinal tetras doesn't necessarily require lowering the pH. As you can see in my tetra breeding videos, I use an egg-separating box to prevent the eggs from being eaten. And for the fry, for the first week or so, I put them in a small container inside the tank so they won't get too close to the heater. Wish you good luck with your breeding project. Thanks for your comment.

    Hi Guys, it's been two years since I posted the video. I've gained a little bit more knowledge about breeding neon tetras. I think there are two points I need to correct to avoid misleading all my tetra fish breeding friends. Point 1: Please do not use tap water directly; the chlorine in it would harm them or even cause fish death. Nowadays, I only use local stream water to breed my tetras. Point 2: Neon tetras don't actually breed at nighttime; they breed in the afternoon, so it's pointless for me to observe them at night.

    Dear Bo: Hyphessobrycon species, such as the ember tetra (Hyphessobrycon amandae); are much hardier than Paracheirodon species, such as the neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) and cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi). Also, the eggs of Hyphessobrycon species are not photo-sensitive, so they are easier, to breed. I wonder if breeders will select-breed ember tetra, to exhibit a true, red coloration. I believe this would be very attractive and highly, sought after. Thank you, for sharing this interesting and informative video. Dear Bo: I noticed that as you fed a fry, at time code 7:08, it appeared that it ate two, brine shrimp cysts, just off camera. Does consuming brine shrimp cysts cause issues, for fish? I’ve heard that it can lead to intestinal obstruction and bloat. I’m careful, when I feed live brine shrimp nauplii, to include as few brine shrimp cysts and cyst shells as possible. Separating live nauplii from such chaff is not difficult, but takes a few minutes. I’m not saying that you include too many. For years I have encouraged my, friend to separate live nauplii, but he continues to feed this, live food, incorrectly. The main tank that gets this is his guppy colony. I’ve noticed that young fish, in that tank expire, quite often and have seen some with intestines protruding, from the anus. I don’t know if incorrect feeding of brine shrimp is the cause of the issue. Thank you, for sharing this terrific, grow-out video, of this lovely species. I appreciate your work, very much. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

    Hello, did you acclimate your fish from tank conditions to conditions in the jar? I believe I lost 3 neons already due to acclimation shock from moving them from a 7.5 ph 180 ppm tank to a 30 ppm and under 6 ph tank. I had also used pure RO water for the attempts in which I had fish die, is pure RO water harmful to them?

      Hello, thanks for your comment. I didn't acclimate my fish from tank conditions to conditions in the jar, because the water parameters in the tank are pretty much the same as those in the jar. The only difference is that the water in the jar is fresh water, which would stimulate spawning. I don't specifically adjust the pH to 6 when breeding neon tetras or even cardinal tetras, as, from my experience, they don't strictly need acidic water to spawn. Fresh water will suffice. However, acidic water might increase the spawning rate. I've only had fish deaths when breeding due to untreated chlorine. But I'd say a sudden drop in pH does shock the fish, so you need to do this process slowly, for example, by putting some pH-lowering media like catapa leaves or soft water resin into the breeding tank, like I did for the ruby tetras.

      @@bothetetrabreeder8734 got it so you can start with adding the tetras then as they are in the breeding bins you can then add tannin reducing leaves so they adjust to it. Thank you for the reply

      Thank you for your nice comment! I think raccoon tetras are hardy fish. They are not picky eaters and are much easier to care for than neon tetras or cardinal tetras.

    What's the alternative food for Cardinal Tetra Fry if you don't have BBS?

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 3 місяці тому

      Hi my friend, if you mean for the first few days after the fry start swimming freely. You can feed them egg yolk solution. But for me, I just feed them BBS directly. Sooner or later, we will have to feed them BBS, it is an irreplaceable food for the fry. I can't think of any other food that's better than BBS.

    Hi bro. I'm finding hard to culture Infusoria for my tetra fries and so as an alternative can i feed Vinegar eels? or just brine shrimp as the food? Please tell me any alternatives for Infusoria. Thanks

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 3 місяці тому

      Hi my friend, thanks for your question. For me, I just feed them baby brine shrimp as soon as they are free swimming. The trick is that you need to put the fry in a small container, so the fry can find the BBS easily. You can see in many of the videos that my fry can eat baby brine shrimp at a very early stage (5-6 days after hatching). Another option for first food is egg yolk solution. I hope they work for you too.

  • @majorbruster5916
    @majorbruster5916 4 місяці тому

    You need to feed the fry on infusoria 24 hours after hatching, otherwise the fry will starve. 21° is too low for the fry, that's why they died. Tannins in the water help keep the pH low and reduce the bacteria and fungi that attack the eggs.

    • @bothetetrabreeder8734
      @bothetetrabreeder8734 3 місяці тому

      Hi my friend. As a guy who's been breeding tetras for many years, I'm confident in saying that we need to wait at least 5 days before the fry is able to eat anything. I agree with you that a low temperature is not good for the fry, and tannins are good for the fry as well. Thanks for your comment.
