Are BYU Football & Kalani Sitake Tempting Fate With 1996 Throwback Uniforms? | BYU Cougars Podcast
The BYU Cougars announced they will don throwbakc uniforms that pay homage to the 1996 BYU football program this fall when they face the Kansas State Wildcats in their Big 12 Conference opener and Jake Hatch explained what he feels about the move and why it means more to him than most seemingly innocuous uniform reveals from Brigham Young University (BYU).
Jake then talked about the commitment of Timpview High School linebacker prospect Taaniela 'Taani' Makasini as he follows his big brother, Sonny Makasini, in making a verbal commitment to Kalani Sitake and the BYU football program and it's just more evidence that BYU has picked up momentum on the recruiting trail this summer and the Cougars are building a great class.
Finally, the show wrapped up with a look at Big 12 Media Days next week and the five players who will represent BYU at the event in Tyler Batty, Connor Pay, Jakob Robinson, Darius Lassiter and Chase Roberts along with head coach Kalani Sitake as they speak with the hordes of media who will be at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Jake - thank you for your story about your grandpa. I am the oldest grandchild and spent so many nights in the 80's getting to attend games at the Marriott Center with my grandma. My grandpa had passed away and she had continued to get season tickets. She would take me with her to any game I wanted. She taught me how to keep stats during the game. I find my mind wandering to those memories when I'm at the Marriott Center. Those memories are very precious.

I agree Jake the hype is out the roof to prove everyone wrong! The hype was the same last we wanted to prove everyone wrong. What worries me the most is football? We stumbled into 5-2 record. We had no offence go back and look at the games it was garbage for the most. The defense took a little step forward and I expect 100% more improvement from them Jay Hill has done a tremendous job. This is make or break for A-ROD we need a 1000% improvement from this staff, if there's going to be proving anything it's on the offence side of the ball!!! We had no tight end production last year affecting our wide out performance and opening up a running game with stellar running backs!!! We can't have simple mental coaching errors there's no RPO in simple running plays ECT!!! I'm rooting for A-ROD & company but now we are in power football there's no room for such errors. Anyhow go COUGARS we are better than we showed last year!!!!

@beau_body4152 If you go back and look at byus precious recruiting rankings, they're abysmal. They were a very good g5 team with those recruits (82 averages). At the power level, they've stepped it up in a big way. Does that mean more wins? Long term I think so. This year? Maybe not but it's not crazy to think they win 1 more game with all the depth they've added. Jake, WHERE'S THE MONEY?! Here is what I and many others want to know: NLI: Feels like the wild west. Ryan Smith and Danny Ainge blow up the NLI for Kevin Young and make him look like a gangster. Mark Pope never had deep pockets like Kevin Young. BYU Football has millions of fans. Some of us are die hard BYU fans. The fact that BYU Football doesn't have way more NLI funds baffles me. Seems like we need a specific director or treasurer over the entire NLI for BYU Sports. Does BYU have an official NLI fund for fans to contribute? If so, who's in charge of it? Why haven't they been advertising for it? Seems like there are a lot of fans who would put money in the pot if BYU had a legit fund. Would be super cool if fans were able to put money towards specific sports or even positions on the football squad....OR put funds into a restricted fund where only the interest and gains could be used to fund the future of BYU Sports. It hurts my soul every time an absolute baller that is a member of the church goes somewhere else because BYU can't competitively match the price that other schools are willing to pay. We have lots of fans with money who would like to see BYU Sports succeed. BYU Basketball is changing due to Danny Ainge and Ryan Smith but what about BYU Football??? Is ROYAL BLUE COLLECTIVE the future of NLI for BYU??? If not, who is??? LIKE A BIG CORPORATION, We need a big time name to represent BYU NLI so donors are ensured that their money is used effectively. Who's the guy?!?!

Of course that's never going to happen. The objective of the Church is to bring the gospel of Jesus Crist to the world. Sports may be the epitome of your life, but millions of members of the Church are more interested in living the Gospel , sure Sports are of interest to a lot of them, especially BYU Sports, but the members are more likely to be interested in living the Gospel and helping others to live their best lives. The humanitarian work of the Church is legendary, and many young missionaries choose a humanitarian mission. I think it's laughable to imagine the Church owning Sports franchises to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sports may be the most important thing in your life. I enjoy them also and I am a diehard BYU fan, but I know that this has nothing to do with my eternal salvation.

Not buying the Darrell Funk excuse. He was worse than a bevy of G5 offensive line coaches. You're telling me that BYU can't do better than the G5 with their offensive line coach. C'mon, Jake. BYU should be better than that.

All college teams are going the same thing so I personally don’t see any benefit versus the other teams.

Why are we making Daryl Funk the scape goat? How convenient! Football is a team sport. When will the players and coaching staff take responsibility for the performance last year. What about average QB play, turnovers and subpar defense, to name few. For example, Jay Hill has not proved anything yet. I am optimistic though. Who will we blame when we see the same results this fall? I as a former D1 offensive lineman and a deep blue BYU fan saw good performances by the offensive line in the last two games of last season. Doesn’t Daryl get any credit for this? Heck no, he just continues to get crucified and run out of the program. Please bring in Conner Pay to explain specifically what Daryl Funk did or Did not do that made him a bad coach? It’s absolutely pathetic the way Daryl has been treated in the press.

Jake needs to rant. He doesn’t realize how it’s not a good look.

So before Funk BYU had two very very good O line coaches who moved on to p4 level after a few seasons. While at BYU they put several linemen into the NFL. At the time of their hirings salaries were enough for them to accept the jobs. It's OK to say that Kalani made a very bad hire when he brought in Funk and not try to excuse it with a lazy excuse like "money". Funk and Tuiaki were his worst hires and it's ok to say that without needing to qualify why he made the bad hires. Also, how much was Funk making and how much is Woods making now ?? Unless you're over the AD payroll nobody can answer without citing rumors

Why not ask some of our MLB guys chip in. It wouldn't be close to adequate but it is a start. This is aggravating we are unable to keep our baseball and soft all talent. 🤬

I'm comfortable offering any kids that attended BYU's camp since they were directly evaluated. I like the potential Wall.

Jake I listen to your program almost every day - - I appreciate your confident, yet honest assessment of BYU sports. So I want to say thank you for all you do. I give you a thumbs up every day because you deserve it.

Alright… let’s not over react about a single 4 ⭐️WR and a 3 ⭐️ TE.. gonna need a lot more than that to compete at a high level

Agreed, but I for one am curious why Baylor is getting the benefit of the doubt going into 2024 while BYU is getting disregarded. Like why?
