  • The BYU Cougars and Big 12 Conference are reportedly looking at re-branding the conference under a corporate sponsorship that could see the league go from being the Big 12 to the Allstate 12 Conference and Jake Hatch has some thoughts on the impact(s) it would have on Brigham Young University (BYU) and the rest of the league if they pull the trigger on the deal.
Jake then talked about the reported interest from Brett Yormark and the Big 12 in bringing on a capital equity firm to take a 15-20% stake in the league in exchange for a reported sum of $800-$1 billion and the concern is how much of a say would the firm have in the conference's dealings and matters, and could it cause issues in the longterm for BYU football or BYU basketball?
Finally, the show wrapped up with some listener thoughts on the Utah Hockey Club announcement and what their mascot should be in Jake's opinion as well as a thought from a BYU fan that believes Jake Retzlaff is getting the short end of the stick from Cougar fans and Jake adds that the hope that BYU gets a quarterback to step up like Gerry Bohanon, McCae Hillstead etc.

Pretty sure the name would NOT be AllState 12. It would be more like AllState BIG 12 or AllState Heartland Conference.

Dude...after this works you can bet your a$$ the SEC and Bigten will sell their naming rights....tooooo much $$$$$$

$2 - $2.5 million per school for naming rights isn't nothing, but it really only closes a marginal, insignificant portion of the monetary gap between the Big 12 and the SEC and the Big 10. It does makes the Big 12 feel more like a desparate minor league though... not sure if the trade off is really worth it.

Big12 schools need to follow the church's lead and invest a portion of their money to make it grow.

THE KEY is CLOSING the MONEY GAP with the SEC and BIG10.... Yormark is brilliant thus far. AllState is a good name as well. The Conference LOGO could intertwine with 'GOOD HANDS PEOPLE' easily and seamlessly....

You want to close the money gap between the BIG XII and the SEC / BIG X? Try winning more football games including CF playoffs. We can't have crappy teams (like BYU this last year) and expect to make more money from sponsors & networks.

I am totally on board with this, and this is classic Yormark, he is a pioneer. DROP THE NUMBER!!! Totally irrelevant anymore and might change in any given year! Allstate Conference is even sort of descriptive, big footprint!

It totally fits the culture of the conference as well. The Big 12 is the most competitive conference each year and nobody correctly predicts the final rankings. We gotta have the mayhem guy doing stunts at the Conference Championship. Our official motto could be "The Mayhem Conference."

The two big dog conferences will certainly follow suite in signing on with private equity. No one in the sports world today will leave money on the table.

Brilliant move by the BIG12, this is not college football of old. If privet equity brings in 800M than go for it. Who cares what the conference name is...

Did you not notice the name of the intern was different from what Candace said and what TPUSA said? So clearly very real. Also, no last names. Candace's story would be extremely easy to simply fabricate out of thin air.

I thought NCAA and conferences were pass-thru entities basically tax-exempt and all money flows to the schools to run their programs. When VC's are getting involved that means they see dollars and that seems to go against everything the NCAA is bult upon.

What is not being talked about is the influence Warren Buffet who owns Alstate Insurance would have on the current Big 12 conference and its schools. Sponsorship can remove the level of influence of schools from the conference and we are alright with this?

BYU football doesnt need sponsors, investors or endorsements. They are a multi-BILLION dollar church. With the interest alone on their money They could build a 100,000 seat stadium, pay all their players tons of money and hire the best coaches. Will they do that. Of course not....but they should.

The mission of the LDS church has nothing to do with playing football, basketball, baseball or any other sport. It is to bring the word and works of Jesus Crist to the world and to see that the members are given every opportunity to live the Savior's way. Not everyone is infatuated in sports. Tithing money and other monies are for temples, meeting houses, welfare projects etc. I don't like this equity idea
To much to lose by giving so much power and leadership to a large Corp.

Nope, not a dime ever. There was even a time when the church would prefer no football, the GH era. Very recently a GA addressed the team before a big game that entire nation watched. It was in a south east coast state near a coast, imploring them not play hard and win, but to avoid anything that might embarrass the church. Hopefully that philosophy is ending.

@@LibertarianUSA1982 I believe BYU fans are fortunate to have a football team at all. There is feeling among many in leadership that football is too violent, and not worth the risk to the church’s desired image. Their timid cave in to an obvious false accusation about an alleged racist remark at the women’s volleyball match is exhibit A.. Before the game with Coastal Carolina a General Authority begged the team to avoid doing anything that might embarrass the church. So we get teams football teams that are encouraged to turn the other cheek instead smacking their opponents on the field

@@michaeltaylors2456 oh I see. I can see day when BYU stops all sports. That would be a sad day. They church will do that when they think the cost isn't worth it, like at RICKS College when they changed it to BYU-Idaho. Or if the government tries to force them to change policies or be shut down. So instead they would just cancel all sports. I would argue that BYU Football is a cultural necessity for LDS members. Its a missionary tool and allows members across the country see their churches school come to their home town to play. Where ever BYU plays, doesn't matter they have a built in fan base.
