Domaine Rossignol-Trapet: Nicolas in Gevrey Chambertin, Combes du Dessus
Nicolas Rossignol speaks about the alluvial fan in Gevrey on which the lower lying village lieux-dits lie, before describing the lieut-dit Combes du Dessus. This excellent village parcel, is situated up slope beneath the chateau at about 290m on about 1m of clay soil over limestone. It provides the structure to the domaine's village cuvée of Gevrey-Chambertin

2018 vintage. From the selecting the parcel of vines within Santenots to putting the grapes in the press. The grapes come from Nicolas Rossignol's vineyard and I made the wine in his winery, along side some Meursault, Gevrey-Chambertin and Volnay, Chevret.

Thomas Bouley in his Hautes-Côtes de Beaune vineyard up on the plateau above Volnay. It was both hot and windy here in June. The soil is quite red, reflecting the high iron content and the grapes can get nice and ripe, but the chunky rocks also give the wine minerality. It’s a very good Hautes-Côtes not least because of the hard work Thomas puts into this vineyard.

Very light soil with little clay, almost sandy… on the upper part of the hill. This makes a tight and mineral wine. Because it is close to the mother rock it is austere as opposed to the elegance of Caillerets.

Deeper soil here with large rocks. The roots can easily penetrate and also it drains well. The fruits achieves high maturity here… black fruit profile. Ronceret means blackberry bush. You have the ripe fruit and the body, but also the freshness from the limestone.

Nicolas Rossignol on the terroir of Volnay. Nico has parcels of village vines below the village, but also on the hill above Volnay where the soil is thin and close to the mother rock with a lot of limestone. It gives a mineral, tight style, while the vines below the village on clay mature earlier and produce a richer style. The higher altitude vines are also North facing hence they need picking...
Nicolas Rossignol, Volnay Caillerets

Nicolas Rossignol describes the soil of Volnay, Caillerets. Situated on quite a steep slope, the vineyard has small stones and less clay than in Chevret which lies below. The texture of the soil is lighter, but not as light as Taillepieds above. The small stones and thin top soil produce an elegant, airy, delicate style of Volnay.

Domaine Boyer-Martenot, Meursault Narvaux Vincent Boyer explains that Narvaux is one of the best of lieux-dits in Meursault. It is high on the slope, just above Genevrières. The soil is rocky and redder than other lieux-dits which makes the wine stronger and more mineral.

Just bought a RT Chambertin 2018 for ~$300 - one of the few “values” left in burgundy. Need to match it with the sibling Trapet to see if the price difference is worth it.
