The Brothers Gwynne
United Kingdom
Приєднався 8 лют 2021
Hi there, we are The Brothers Gwynne who consist of the brothers, Ed and Will. This is a booktube account that will also discuss films, re-enactment, games and many more of our hobbies.
Ed is a part-time viking, part-time knight and a full-time teacher. You can find him in the corner wearing a coat of mail reading a good book.
Will is a student who will be studying English and History at university. He is also a re-enactor who has grown up with a book in his hand. He reads so much that after five years travelling to the same school, he still could not tell you directions to it, as his face was always in a book.

The Brothers Gwynne Introduction - Favourite Books Genres
Haha I like how Will was quickly looking at Ed after he said his big word. I wish I knew what he said but it did sound very smart
The series is amazing! Hope you both stick with it! Despite the absurdist premise, it’s some of the best world building and character development out there.
Love Simmons but I found The Terror to be such a slog, DNF about halfway.
Fury of the Gods amazing ! Heartbroken though but what a great story in the Bloodsworn series ! The book covers are so beautiful! 🤩 🐉🐺🐍
I’ve had Arthur on my shelf for almost a year, and really need to get to it. I loved Lancelot and Camelot.
Fury of the gods - best Papa Gwynne book imho ! :D
I'm currently reading The Daughter's War, and I haven't read Blacktongue Thief, and I'm not at all confused! I don't know spoiler wise, but I would agree with you. 'I don't like their noses' Ed you need to reevaluate your life choices. Rabbit noses are so cute!!
I had to push back starting on «Gael Song» in late December due to my pneumonia, but I am excited to get to it this Spring, together with «Lancelot»! And John over on Talking Story recently sold me on «Glorious Exploits»: The mix of comedy and tragedy, and the Irish cherry on top, leaning on the Irish Literature and Theatre having a tradition of links (at times not a little irreverent! 😅) to Classical Greek Literature & Theatre, such as Yeats, James Joyce & Samuel Beckett, makes me think it could be a fun read in between R. Scott Bakker’s «The Aspect Emperor» and Tad Williams’ «The Last King of Osten Ard» this Summer! (It perhaps didn’t hurt that I just got back from the first read-through for my third time playing in our Local Amateur Historical Play, where the director asked if I wanted to try playing the Rival Antagonist in the Main Love Triangle (after two turns as the male lead) and her essentially having a fit of laughter of how devious I was reading the part! 😂) Cheers Chaps!
You're wearing a garment that has GLORIOUS EXPLOITS's jacket shade in its pattern, Ed, so clearly chrome yellow is a favorite.
I would totally wear Glorious Exploits as a t-shirt! Ed
@@thebrothersgwynne I wish they'd make a t-shirt of the jacket.
I didn't read that many new releases Funny story by Emily Henry i really enjoyed this book Just for the summer by abby Jimenez loved it Long after we are gone by terah shelton Harris i totally recommend this book
Glad you really enjoyed these books! Ed
Would you ever do a book recommendation for women's history month it's in march
What a great video idea! Ed
Such a lovely thing to do, and great for us to hear about all these amazing sounding books!! Papa Gwynne, what a legend. Who was responsible for the raven?! 😂
If you can ever find them , Talbot Mundy wrote 5 or 7 books about Tros of Samothrace. Great character and story. His main enemy is Julius Caesar and it's set in Britian during Caesar's invasion. These books were written in the 1930's.
Gotta say I love your variety in reading and authenticity. As someone who reads a bit of everything I leave your videos with a long list of reccomendations. I enjoy how candid and honest you are when speaking of books you enjoy or dislike
Great video Ed!! 107 books is insane! Some interesting choices here, but I agree with most of them 😂 I will say, I think Jade City might be GOAT for me, you know how much I love that series (your fondly jokes always make me lol). I kind of agree about the heavy handedness of Jade War at times, I think that's the product of the story covering such a large span of time. It didn't bother me because I was so invested in the character and world that I was just sucked in so much that I didn't really find it jarring. I still don't think Greenbone beats Bloodsworn for me though, Papa G is a GOAT! I have a lot of the same issues with Sanderson as you do. I really loved Mistborn, but it was one of the first proper adult high fantasy books that I read and I feel like I might not love it as much if I read it for the first time now. I also think his popularity is a hindrance to some readers, the expectations are so high that the books have no chance of meeting them. It doesn't mean his books are bad, but it's unrealistic to expect them to work for every fantasy reader. Although I will say I would put Way of Kings above Wolf Hall. So much historical fiction here that I need to get to, I'm really slacking with that genre! It's the drama Mick! I l just love it! ACOTAR is just pure fun and vibes and the drama is to die for (it gets emotional too though). I have been chatting with Sadie about the series too and loving it so much, it's a series that has helped me turn my brain off and I totally respect your decision to put it where you did 😂 I love rereads so much too
43:31 Fonda Lee, fondly. Pun intended??
Hahah with Ed, the pun is always intentional! Will
Great lists and good variety as well. I'm picking books for 2 annual reading challenges, but otherwise reading my whim, I don't like to plan too much or I feel bogged down by too much planning. Hope you both have a brilliant reading year 😊
I am most shocked on the ranking of Dune: Messiah and ACOTAR 😅. I love that you read those with your wife though! Dune was such a great read for me, where Dune:Messiah wasn’t. I am still debating if I want to finish out the last three. What a fun watch. I enjoyed how your opinions didn’t really follow what’s “mainstream” so much. Thanks for putting this together!
Ed was OBSESSED with Dune: Messiah! I have heard it is quite a divisive book. Ed will appreciate that! So glad you enjoyed this video :). Will
Art is subjective and you like what you like. It’s your list and that’s what’s important. I loved this video and I’m intrigued to read quite a lot of these. Love your dad’s work and can’t wait to read more of his books and also joe Abercrombie. I do want to read david gemmel but not sure where to start with his books.
Fantastic list, although I know you're going to get pushback for some of these! 😂 I do agree with you about Andy Weir though, and I was starting to feel like the only one! I don't hate his books, or anything, and I do appreciate what he's trying to do, but his humour is a big miss for me and I do find myself cringing my way through a lot of it...
Ed is an honest man! Shame Andy Weir also hasn't clicked with you! I haven't read any of his works, but the way Ed described Project Hail Mary, I may try some other science fiction first... Will
I'm curious at what makes a Gwynne fantasy novel so different than a Sanderson fantasy novel?
@@Spacecadet2 of course some people will say I’m biased but I really connect to Gwynne’s books on an emotional level, whereas with Sanderson I have struggled to really root for those characters he wants us to root for. Gutted as I really want to like Sanderson’s work! Thanks for watching. Ed
It's nice to see a booktuber not simping for Sanderson. Ya got a new sub!
How splendid that Prague inspired Dan! Greetings from his fan in Czechia 🥰I'm currently reading Dan's Henry V and it's such a gem! Dan is an awesome writer and once I'm done with his non-fiction books, I might give his novels a shot. The battle of Crécy is well known in my country because our king, John the Blind, was killed during the battle, fighting for France. Thank you for the interview, guys.
A bit too top heavy on family and friends and to put SJM above Hobb is just mental, but I agree with Red Country, it’s the best of the standalone books.
Too top heavy on family and friends for who? For me? Definitely not. All genuine opinions. These things can change depending on when you make the list and enjoyment etc. Glad you liked Red Country too! Joe’s a great writer. Ed
Wow! What a reading year! An impressive amount of books Ed! Congrats! Honoured by the kind words! Thanks so much! Can't wait to one day rank an Edward or William Gwynne book as a top tier novel! So excited to catch up with you gents in the summer! May your 2025 reads be awesome!
Ed constantly tells me I need to dive into A Drowned Kingdom! Looking forward to uni commitments to slow down a bit so that I can start..... Ed's current project he's working for is AWESOME. Happy reading :). Will
Omg the will of the many in b tier..
B tier still means I mega enjoyed it! Ed
The will of the many in b tier is not the will of the many! Okay it is a subjective tier list XD and glad you enjoyed it. Islington is an amazing author and i love his fantasy sci fi blends.
It's refreshing to see an S-tier not bloated with Brandon Sanderson, Ken Liu, Matt Dinniman, James Islington, Fonda Lee and other booktube copycat hype. Thanks for the genuinely interesting video. Cheers.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video :). Sadly Sanderson has not quite clicked with us... but we're happy for those who do love it! We are quite random readers ahah, so hopefully there were a few less-mentioned titles that intrigued you! Will
Have you read any of the ones you just listed? Most of them are liked for a reason
Ed how would you compare larry mcmurtry’s other books to lonesome dove? Are they a significant step down in quality?
I think they’re really solid 4.5 star reads. If you’re a western fan they’re definitely for you. Lonesome Dove feels like a masterpiece that everyone could read, western fan or not. But I still loved the others, seeing Call and Gus’ friendship through the years is so much fun. Ed
Glorious Exploits was my favourite of the year as well. If you ever re-read, Lennon reads the audio himself and it’s bloody fantastic.
I did not know he narrates it! Thank you so much. Will definitely keep that in mind for a re-read :). Will
Grace of Kings,Mistborn,The Way of Kings on E - I can't believe it. Omg. :D A Storm of Swords only B ! :D This is just insane !!! Truth and Courage ! :D
😂 I’ve clearly gone mad! Thanks for watching. Truth and courage! Ed
Love your honesty and way so many of same thoughts, even on Wolf Hall. I would also put Sanderson and Babel in E, bored me stupid. If you and Sadi like ACOTAR give Black Jewels a go by Anne Bishop. Probs the books that inspired SJM, so like most originals are better.
Bold takes. Can’t say I agree, but it’s refreshing to hear differing opinions.
Thanks for watching 😊 Ed
If you read 107 books in a year, have you really read any?
Yep! Ed
I get you don't like Sanderson but putting Way of kings as the worst book you read all year of 107 is just factually wrong, it's literally impossibe.
Have you ever heard of the word subjective? Ed
@ Obviously but you seem to enjoy fantasy to some degree considering the other books you read. I could accept it being the worst one if you hated fantasy and it was the only fantasy book you read all year. It just come across as that you wanted to hate it and had decided before you even read it :)
@ honestly not the case whatsoever. I can assure you very much wanted to like it but found it incredibly disappointing. Genuine feelings I’m afraid. 😊😊 Ed
@AntonGranbo may I ask what other Fantasy books/authors you read this year, that makes you think so highly of TWOK?
Thank you, great idea for a video!❤
Thanks for watching!! Ed
You should check out some of Tony Hillermans “leaphorn and chee” novels. They’re short little mysteries about Navajo police in the American southwest.
Really keen to read some Hillerman! Thanks 😊 Ed
I’ve never sat through a UA-cam video longer than hour. Loved this one. I dnf’d The Grace of Kings and agree with your thoughts on Sanderson. Lonesome Dove is my favourite book. Definitely deserves GOAT treatment. I’m currently reading Gemmell for first time, his Troy series and I absolutely love it. Will definitely be reading more of his books.
Thank you so much for watching! Glad to see some shared opinions too! Lonesome Dove really is amazing. Brilliant that you’re enjoying Gemmell, my brother Will loves that series. Ed
Ed do you have that reprint date for the paperbacks of Blood and Bone?
I think Summer 2025…. But not 100% :). Will
You just sold me on Silver blood promise!
That’s great news! So many good things to say about it. Ed
Berserk in d tear is a crime
@@alibaba0428 just that specific volume. Many of the earlier volumes would be in my GOAT / A tier for sure. Ed
Not Wil with the weenie dog 😂
@@wednesdaysweekly 😂😂
Yeah, «The Silence of the Girls» is so heartbreaking, looking to get to «The Women of Troy» this year! The two first «Rigante» books (which I would argue is a two-parter with the opening of book 1 and ending of book 2) were really pleasant surprises for me last year: Personally I gravitated more to the borderline Arthurian Tragedy of Connavar, but the character work by Gemmell is superb, even minor characters and many of the antagonists are written with such empathy, plus Jasaray was such an great and innovative antagonist , clearly taking some inspiration from Julius Caesar and Napoleon but making him a truly unique Gemmell character! I guess we have to agree to disagree on «Grace of Kings», as I see Liu as immensely efficient and effective in his prose and I rarely have seen such larger then life characters as Kuni & Mata becoming unlikely (and yet so naturally!) compatriots and felt such heartache over a fallout so clearly telegraphed from a mile away (and that is before I have mentioned Jia, one of the most complex characters ever written in Epic Fantasy, as well as my boy Cogu Yelu! 😎🙌) Not one battle felt repetitive and how Liu made Economics, Technological Innovation, Culture , Chemistry & Diplomacy feel as natural to Epic Fantasy as Shield Walls, Magic or Divine Intervention, astonish me! That said, it is the Common Consensus (I disagree!😅) that the following three books are better, so hopefully that might be better to your liking, Ed! Remind me, Ed: You had read «Aztec» by Gary Jennings, right? Was recently recommended it, and thought you had so too in the past! Cheers Ed (and no hard feelings over «Grace of Kings», passion and friendly & honest disagreement is the name of the game on Booktube!😄😊)
Completely agree regarding the Rigante! It’s Gemmell at his best for sure. Haha that’s not a problem! I have heard that people who have the same opinion as me with book 1 change their minds the further they read into the series so I do think I will continue it at some point! This was definitely a ‘me’ problem I think. I haven’t read Aztec but I have a very nice old hardback sitting on my shelf! I hope to get to it this year 😊 No hard feelings at all! It would be boring if we all had the same opinions 😁 Hope you are feeling better my friend. Ed
ACOTAR over The Way of Kings and The Grace of Kings is insane
It’s the drama Haden! Ed
@@thebrothersgwynne ...but they utterly stink on every metric! They're bad BAD *BAD* storytelling and worse writing!
@@mudgetheexpendable okay! Ed
Brother how is it possible to read that many books a year? What am I doing wrong? Or is Audiobook the way? because I personally dont like audiobook
Lots of these are audio! I’ve definitely trained myself to really focus on them. Give it a go! I’d recommend trying to listen to a book you already love. Ed
Greetings Chaps! About to finish my notes on «Dreaming the Eagle» and had two questions: 1) Did you guys make or plan to make videos on the other books in the «Boudica series» or a spoiler discussion? Found only your «DtE» video and you mentioned making more there. 2) Does Scott’s depiction of Cassivellaunus having a multicoloured cloak representing the different tribes have any historical/legendary origin? I could only find that he in the later «Mabinogion» is said to have a cloak of invisibility, but I was reminded of Connovar having a similar cloak in David Gemmell’s «Rigante» stories (also inspired by the Roman Invasions of Britain), might that be an inspiration for Mrs. Scott? Cheers! 😎🙌
I shamefully still have not finished the series… once I do we will chat about the series and hopefully talk to Manda Scott herself at some point :). Love that point about the cloak! In short… I have no idea. But it’s something we can ask if her if she does come on the channel! Will
Having watched a previous of your episodes on this and several lists on other sites, I notice that the authors mentioned are post-WWII American and British writers. Not even a mention of Robert Graves. Little to no mention of 19th century or foreign language writers. Where is Dumas(or Hugo and Zola)? For contemporary writers there are Jean-François Parot on the period of Louis XV and Boris Akunin on Tsarist Russia. Robert van Gulik was Dutch but wrote in English his stories about Judge Dee in ancient China. I could name others from Finland, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Japan, and Italy. If Americans, and maybe Brits, read, they do not read books in translation It seems that you all choose from the same limited bag of selection possibilities.
Please name some more for recommendations. Unfortunately we haven’t read anything - we’d love to though! Very keen to explore older his-fic. Dumas is next on my list. Thanks! Ed
@@thebrothersgwynneVery nice of you. I am old and do not have a lot of things on the top of my head, but here a a few: most accessable to you would be American Caleb Carr who passed away recently and wrote about Chicago and NYC in the 19th century along with a whole lot else; Chinese classics such as "The Three Kingdoms" and "The Water Margin". Not quite fiction, but an autobiography that reads like it is Austrian novelist Stefan Zweig with "The World of Yesterday". Austrian Schnitzler's "Road to the Open"(Der Wegs ins Freie). They were two of the most popular writers worldwide in the 20's. Their works were adapted to the screen. Finally, Mexican Paco Taibo II "Four Hands" and I think one on Pancho Villa. He wrote a lot of other stuff too, much translated into English. Oh, I also almost forgot Finn Mika Waltari best known for "The Egyptian". He wrote others.
So much viking fiction. Seems that’s all we can get in English.
🥚🥚
I loved The Last Shield! So much action, plus excellent writing. Liked it so much I read his last book, The Maleficent Seven, and thought it was just as good if not better.
Cheers for your kind words! I'm very glad you had so much fun :)
These sound awesome thank you a lot. Awesome suggestions
